Squier Precision MIC re-birth * FINISHED!*
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Build Diaries
OK...so a quick update. I have finally finished the decoupage and a nice shiny spray can of Nitro has arrived in the post soit feels like we are heading into the home straight! Quick question - how thick do coats of Nitro tend to end up being? Also I have heard that when you do multiple coats of Nitro -the layers meld and mesh together a little which helps build up a thickness to the overall finish (as opposed to remaining chemically and physically separate layers like polyurethane) The reason I ask is that the decoupage inevitably has a certain amount of relief and texture to it. I am not too fussed about achieving a perfect, flat mirror finish but it would be nice to perhaps see some of the more obvious troughs and peaks levelled out a bit. Also sanding the finish maybe tricky without sanding through the Nitro and and scuffing the paper underneath. Any thoughts or advice? -
Picked up Deadwood DVD boxsets from Chris and he is a top bloke! Deadwood is great! A little strong on the bad language front but a great watch.

I might come along and if anyone is interested I could bring along my bitsa precision: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209842-squier-precision-mic-re-birth/page__fromsearch__1 Hopefully it will be finished [s]by[/s] long before then!
Something a little different Love the way that the minimal bassline and drums drive the song.
Love The Weeknd. Saw them on Jool Holland and promptly added them to my Spotify playlist -
That is a lovely looking P. Loving the multi pickup action!
The suspense of this is killing me!! If this goes on much longer I'll drive over to Hemel and do the job myself
Here you go Grangur... here's a teaser to keep you happy! - Just a little something I knocked up... Couldn't quite get the photo of the body and the body in the image to line up but you get the idea... -
I admire Ibanez for putting this out there. In my opinion it isn't the prettiest single cut that I have seen - but beauty is in the the eye of the.........
...bassist who doesn't get neck dive!
Most bass rigs don't get much past a Fender and Ampeg. IMO
Is that coz most bass players pursue such a unique or hard to find 'sound', it is in fact the same 'sound' as most other bassists?

Found this band today - one for the metal and metalcore peeps - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK5a4iAx98 -
Finally some pictures. The uploaded wants them to appear sideways. I dunno why. I can provide more on request. Currently up to my upload limit......
Is that a crazy tail piece on that pick guard/control plate or is it a reflection? I can't make it out!

My first choice wouldn't have been blue but now you have put the bass together it does have a certain charm and I quite like it! I too wouldn't be disappointed if you decided to paint it white - but I do quite like it as it is!
Any luck with getting that strap button sorted?
Not yet, but I have been ill/ on holiday/ busy etc etc etc so I haven't even finished the decoupage layers yet. I think I will need to see if I can lay my hands on any 'blueprints' or technical drawings which show where the hole is in relation to say, the bridge on the precision body. -
Welcome Jason!

I would describe my self as a 'barely out of nappies' when it comes to basses. I am comfortable playing most stuff with root notes and I am starting to put my own passing notes, flourishes in (some work, some don't). I started on my ibby SR300 which I love. However I love the look of the dingwalls. I am considering getting a combustion at some point in the coming months but I am terrified. Dingwalls (perhaps uniquely) are recognisable because of the fan frets and they look like they cost alot. Fenders for example - unless you know your stuff could have cost anywhere from £250 second-hand to £XXXXX depending on the year. So if I turn up to play a dingwall everyone - bass players and non-musicians (lets call them "muggles") will be thinking - 'wow that bass looks cool - he must be really good!' I am clearly going to embarrass myself by the obvious void between their expectation and my playing ability! So its almost like I feel I haven't outgrown my 'beginners' bass but I want to treat myself anyway. I know it shouldn't matter but you know what snobs musicians can be like - even some of my best mates (mostly guitarists) talk about each others musical short comings behind their backs and in one sense I don't want them to think I am 'too big for my boots' or that I have an over inflated picture of my capabilities but I try to just look at it that the more I enjoy playing the bass the better I will get and quicker!
...and the aesthetic disparity between the bass' mini bucker and the empty space at the guitar bridge has been playing on my mind. ...I'm still compelled by the idea and the "purity" of building a neckbucker only machine so until the router hits the wood (as they probably say) I'm still completely undecided as to whether or not bridge pups will make it onto this project.
You could always just paint a black humbucker-sized rectangle on to the guitar near the bridge to retain the purity but keep the 'balanced' look! Seriously though this looks like it will be another great project and I look forward to seeing how it progresses!

The caption is already done but I think its worth a resurrected thread!
Thanks for this lovely post, Steve. As I mention in my blog, I was at your show but was bombarded by a series of urgent texts and calls and had to leave almost immediately to avoid disturbing the rest of the audience. I'll try again next time you're in town The blog is now published! http://wp.me/p2ZbyY-dQ I will obviously continue improving it, but this should be more or less what it looks like. I have lost and/or I mix up in my mind the names of five of you who visited - your photos are numbered in the blog, would you please either reply here or PM me so I can add you to the blog? Apologies for that and thank you in advance - The notes I had taken on a scrap of paper on that Sunday got lost somewhere between Olympia and Chiswick... I'm preparing the album with the "extra" photos to publish on Flickr for those of you who aren't bored to death after reading my blog! Thank you all for your patience so far!
Hey Silvia - I am photo No.2!
Does anyone else share my slight concern that, on the back of all this positive publicity for the London Bass Guitar Show, slightly dyslexic bass players might end up buying tickets to LGBS events ?
I'm not even dyslexic and I always struggle with this!
-
That sounds very reasonable on the clean and slaps. How high can your turn up the volume on the bass and the amp?
-
Yea you can, I've been a bit cautious with it though as I didn't want to hurt the speakers especially at first but now it seems I can play bass through it fine. Playing guitar through it has always been fine and sounds really good. It really is loud for such a small amp!
Thanks mark! I'm thinking of getting something like this but I afraid it will epithet not be loud enough or the bass guitar would simply blow out the cone. I will see if I can find and videos online where a bass is being played through it.

Can you play bass guitar through that!?
