Anyone played at a recording of don't tell the bride? Got one coming up very soon but can't say any more than that. Would be good to get the band on TV
I watched it last night and I caught a flash of someone playing a musicman in the background (recognised the headstock!) and immediately thought to myself - odds are there are bassists on here who will have played on don't tell the bride!

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Prime_BASS's topic in General Discussion
...in your opinion. It makes me laugh when people have their car stereos way too loud. Their attitude is, 'check out what I'm into, isn't it great?' But it's never Mozart, is it??
As a bit of a laff, me and some mates put on some big band music (similar in style to the Coronation Street music but a full brass band) and stuck that on the car stereo full blast and wound down all the windows. We did our hair and wore cool shades to complete the look. Driving through King's Lynn in the middle of the day we got some funny looks and made some people laugh! -
What to do when you got mardy neighbours?

I have a friend with the same problem. My advice is to say or better write to them simply - "I will be practicing my music on my bass guitar and you can either give me 2 times per week that I can practice for an hour or two, or if you don't I will let you know that I will be doing it at time X and time Y although this will not be before 9.30am or after 9.00 pm. I will promise not to play outside of these times without letting you know in advance when and how long I will be playing for. I also promise not to play at excessive volume, though I may not be able to avoid some small amount of sound leakage." This way they have to provide times which are more convenient for them or they will be given your practice schedule without any input on when is best. Your job is then to stick to the times agreed, not have it too loud and if you do want to play outside those times, make sure they know or use headphones! Simples! Just bear in mind that bass travels much better than other instruments so is always likely to be heard further away than you might expect/want. BTW I am not a lawyer so don't come running to me if it don't work! -
Welcome Robc, I'm sure you will find friends (and possibly a fretless bass for sale) here!

More from Raygun Relics - Upgraded Strat

Raygun relics could be a side project or pseudonym of the 'master guitar bodger' who has been responsible for previously locked threads! :/ -
Vester Bass Guitar (or is it an Ibanez SR 5 String?)
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Bass Guitars
Holy necropost! But seriously did we actually get to the bottom of if they were an Ibanez copy or if they were the factory that made the SR for Ibanez who decided to do their own etc? Can any one shed any light? -
Welcome Ax(el)! Certain you will find kindred spirits!

5 String under £300 recommendation..
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to JuliusGroove's topic in Bass Guitars
I recently picked up an OLP MM3 5 string stingray for £150 which is what you seem to be looking for! Im told build quality may vary but generally if you get one as it should be, you have saved yourself at least about £700 compared to a full on Musicman equivalent! -
I think I would have a Dingwall Super J Standard. I love the squished and stretched look than the fanned frets, angled bridge & pickups creates.
Is there something wrong with the A string saddle? It looks out. I OLPs
yep sorry! I see what you mean and yes. It was out for the photo. Not sure what happened to make it do it but I flicked it back in and it not happened since. I think it happened during transport to me.

I bought this second hand and so I am reviewing with this in mind. First impressions:9/10 High quality 3 piece Ash (I think) body and a lovely maple neck and fretboard which is feels similar to my Squier Precision neck (obviously wider to accommodate the extra string) but feels 'faster'. Good: I really love the way this guitar looks. It is a simple, understated and classic design which really appeals to me. I have a soft spot for Maple fretboards! One thing to watch with lower priced 5 string basses is that the low B string can be quite weak and wooly sounding. This is most definitely not an issue with this guitar. In fact when I am playing it even if I try and play it gently it seems to come through a bit loud. I may have to adjust the pickup slightly. Bad: The set up seems a bit low action which can translate in to slight buzzing especially on the lower strings but I think this is a set up issue rather than any issue inherent with the guitar itself. Sound: 8/10 The sound is not like any other bass I have heard (in my limited experience). To me this bass sounds very 'uncoloured', with the sound that is coming from the strings having a raw, woody and 'untampered with' feel. My Squier Precision and Ibanez don't sound as natural somehow. Its hard to explain. The tone is earthy and warm with a mellow punch (like a good wine! ) Summary: 9/10 I have heard the these OLP basses can be hit and miss in terms of quality control and that you should make sure you try before you buy to make sure you get a good one. But as you might have heard, if you do get a good one - it is gonna be great! Given that this bass is my first 5 string and it took me a few minutes to get used to it, I really love it. It just seems to 'fit' with my playing and every time I pick it I love feeling the 'heft' of it and playing around. It is a double bonus for me too that it has actually helped me with playing my Squier and Ibanez. The Squier now feels easier to play - I always found it an effort after playing the Ibanez. And playing the Ibanez feels like 'home'. So all in all this has made both my existing basses better without being rubbish itself and I suppose you can't ask for more than that!

I have a Squier P and an Ibby SR300 and I love both. I would recommend trying one out in a shop or if you live near a basschat member then I'm sure someone would let you have a noodle on theirs....I am in the Chesham/Amersham area if you are any where near here and you are welcome to try mine.

Went to a gig at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire to see Children of Bodom on Tuesday night They were supported by Napalm Death plus Insomnium (who I am gutted I missed) and another band I never heard off. Napalm Death were not great - I remember hearing a CD of theirs years ago and thinking they don't seem to be very exciting and their music is very mediocre. But hey, I thought, they are probably great live as they have such a following. Saw them on Tuesday and they were very disappointing. They seem like they are just heavy for the sake of being heavy. All their songs sounded the same and they were staunchly anti-this and anti-that but didn't mention anything that they were 'for'. There were timing issues with the drummer and it really just sounded like a bunch of teenagers in a garage who wanted to be \m/ metul yeah? \m/ They were followed by Children of Bodom who I have only been introduced to recently and they clearly showed up the vast difference in musicality between ND and themselves. Very proficient musicians who produce a great sound together. The only downer was that the sound in the O2 Empire sound was shockingly badly mixed. I don't know if their sound tech had gone deaf from the years working there.... oh well! I enjoyed myself!
And now for the money shot .... Last thing, I placed an OG decal on the headstock. It took a great deal of soul searching before I did this. Strictly speaking I shouldn't have as I never made the neck from scratch but as this is a tour bass I'm doing a bit of shameless self promo.
Bloomin' awesome! Is that pic with or without the bronze/gold highlights? The Stand looks like a stroke of genius too!

I am based in Buckinghamshire (Chesham/Amersham area) and I am interested to play. I don't play in a band but I do play in the Worship group at church so we might be able to get some donations from the congregation? So the deal is that I make a donation, meet the previous 'guardian' and collect the guitar, let people at church know what is going on so they can make donations, play it, take a photo of me playing it and then pass the bass to the next person? Let me know....

As a consumer I love Spotify - £10 per month and can listen to (more or less) whatever I want whenever I feel like it. I have also found many many bands on Spotify which I would not have been introduced to otherwise because non of my friends were into them etc... I do have a worry about making sure the artists do get a fair deal and since they are the content creators, if they all stopped making music then Spotify would have nothing to sell so it is not in Spotify's long term interest to screw over the artists. Maybe someone needs to create a 'Fairtrade' music streaming service so, similiar to coffee, bananas and clothing, people can have a choice to pay £10 per month to potentially money grabbing unscrupulous companies or £15 to 'Spoti-fair' where you know that the artist is being given a guaranteed x% of your subscription etc.. I guess the difference with coffee or bananas etc is that you pay £X and you know that you will be supplied with N grams of product. You might pay £10 to spotify and listen to 1 tune or 10,000 so spotify must have some kind of way of dividing up the finite £10 amongst a potentially very high number of artists.

Jazz bass with two precision pickups
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I wonder if there is a 'Disaster Area' bass guitar around, with black finish, black pickguard, black tuners, bridge, and nut, black nylon coated strings, and an ebony fretboard. Fretless, unless you can buy black fretwire. (It seems that you can't). Black dots.
Thats sort of what I was aiming for with my precision. But I haven't got around to swapping the Affinity neck for some a little better and blacker... -
Got any pics of you 'shredding the goat'? ... and that's not supposed to be a euphemism!
