1.
No worries, mate. I just like doing extensive research into the instruments I own. And this is why I opted for the older model. (I bloody love this bass!) The new SR300s makes it look like you're getting more with the extra knob, but actually they've taken away a feature. The 4-knobs on the older models do everything the 5 knob models do - mid, bass, treble boost/cut. The sweeper knob on the older 300s boosts if turned clockwise, cuts if centred - but if you go anti clockwise you get that wonderful mid scoop sound. To try to illustrate what it does: think of a graphic eq with all the sliders, now think of all those sliders controlling JUST the bass OR treble OR mid section. When boosted, all the sliders rise uniformly, when cut they lower uniformly. Now think of all those sliders controlling just the mid range - again, with boost or cut, they all move together but with a scoop, only the bass and treble ends of the mid range rises, but the mids of the mid range doesn't. If you're picturing the eq sliders, that makes a scoop shape. Lots of guitarists and bass players love a mid scoop - some get it via effects pedals if their instrument doesn't already do it - and few instruments do. Basically it means you can get that slap sound sharp and clear without muddying it with the mid section of the mid range. Hopefully that made sense! But at least I know what I'm talking about...
Just done a quick scout of Ibanez SR300 web page and yep you are right...! Looks like they have now brought out the SR300 with an amazing deep purple colour which wasn't there a few days ago when I last looked!
2. Ahh - Fair enough - I thought they had just renamed it as when I read the reviews and choosing between them, although people didn't mention how different the old/new version sounded, they described what the knob did and it sounded from the description like it was doing more or less the same thing. I have also tried using it for slap bass and it does seem to make a much better sound for slapping and popping when turned one way than the other but hey - I am a noob who knows his place! If anyone lives in the Hemel, Wycombe area and has a four knob style one and wants to compare to a five knob style one let me know! we can go for a pint and do a compare and contrast.
3.
Bad news on the GAK front. The resident manthing is experiencing serious bass envy of my new SR300 and is impressed with the Style Sweeper EQ so I contacted them today. Seems their advertisements are indeed out of date and they're very much afraid all their stock is the new kind with 5 knobs. Which I dare say are very good but no go on the Style Sweepers. Still, there are a few used ones in good condition on Ebay...
The newer five knob one also has a style sweeper. It is the middle one of the three smaller knobs. On the older model the bass and treble are concentric on a single pot.
4. Hey Guys, Still not got this one quite sorted. I tried the battery pack for a while but the missus thought it would be a good idea to plug her hair straighteners into it while camping and I think she blew it - it can't even cope with a mobile phone being plugged into it now! Anyway.. being on the hunt for a battery powered speaker which will let me play along with some mates in a field somewhere it seems mcnach has the best option with that trolley thing. One more question (for now). Anyone know much about the Fender Passport Mini - it seems to do what I need and it says "any instrument" but I know that electric bass guitar doesn't always come under the "any instrument" category because of the frequencies. Bearing in mind this is not for gigging and will just be for playing bass with 3 or 4 people sat in a circle having a jam - do you think this would fit the bill?
5. I bought my SR300 in late November 2012 and I went for the newer model for two reasons: 1) More knobs look more 'trick'. Not the case with all guitars admittedly but the SR300 is quite modern looking and lends itself to more knobs IMHO 2) When I tried the older version with the slightly rounded pups my thumb kept slipping off it when I was playing. The new(er) model has less contoured pups and offer a better 'ledge' to rest your thumb on.
6. So if it is not a bass and not left handed, when he says 'it still has the plastic on the back' Do you think he means the plastic knobs on the front?!
7. Bought my first bass (Ibanez SR300) from them and it arrived within a few days tip top. I feel slightly guilty when ordering from them as I would rather support a more local shop. But they were the only place with the bass I wanted in the colour I wanted. But you cant fault their German efficency!
8. Nice looking bass! - I am considering a neck with a Maple fretboard for my black Squier P!
9. If they need/want you to do more practise sessions than you are comfortable doing you can always ask for petrol money to cover your cost of getting there.
10. Nice looking guitar, never seen one in red before. Looks great! I would if I could....
11. Small update. Just ordered black pickguard screws and black strap pins. More black, more cool!
12. I like the fact you have a dead cool yellow SR and a totally black precision with funky strings. I got an orange SR with a totally black precision with funky black strings! I do kinda wish the hardware (pots, bridge, tuners etc) on my SR were proper black like yours rather than the 'cosmic' black which is a sort of dark chrome.
13.
Me too I have the piano white one.....but I do like the Orange too !
I got the Orange SR - see profile pic - and I love it. I don't think the yellow one was available when I bought mine. (it looks like the older version with four pots instead of five) I don't think I would have gone for yellow on the SR anyway!
14. If I am using ear bud style ones for practice I normally loop them over the back of my ear and dangle them just in front of my lug hole, sometimes with one of them actually pushed in . That way I can hear most of the track and still hear the bass guitar.
15.
I used to own this: Does that have enough yellow in it to count?
Remind you of anything...?
16. I go t some catching up to do
17. So putting all your various comments together we are looking at an unauthorised copy of an Ibby SR but which seems to match it for quality?
18. Hey guys, I was browsing the ebay listings and came across this. I have never heard of Vester before, but this looks suspiciously like my Ibanez SG SR300 even with the same Maple/Rosewood 5 ply neck. Does anyone know anything about Vester and if they 'share' or rebadge the SR range with Ibanez or is it just a copy with reasonable attention to detail? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vester-5-string-Bass-/200951262761
19. I am a Chesham-er too. I started playing just before Christmas and could use some help. I might well give you a shout when I have some cash!
20. Given that I know pretty much zero about Arias and to me it looks lovely whatever it is, what kind of price difference would it mean whether it is actually a Japan built Elite II rather than a non Japan built SB ELT? Is he doing himself out of money or making more than he should? *Edit* I'm not going to buy it so you can tell me!
21.
I've got a 58 plate Mazda 6 sport estate. Nice car, drives really nice, good equipment level, fantastic Bose stereo ( some models come with a chemical repair kit rather than a spare wheel, in its place is a lovely Bose subwoofer) good economy. The only thing I would say is that the 2008 models had a 143ps 2.0d, which is what mine has, whereas my friend has a 59 plate 185ps 2.2d and it feels/sounds more refined. So if I were looking to buy one now then I' would definitely go for a 2.2.
Agreed - that's what the reviews say too. I am looking at the 183ps model. Tasty indeed.
Smart Car. I can get 2x10 and 1x15 mesa boogie Powerhouse cabs together or a 4x10 Powerhouse on its own in the back, the walkabout head in its gig bag on the front seat and the bass in it's case in the passenger footwell and held in place with the seatbelt. Not something I do often as it's a bit cramped driving but it works. Usually it's just one cab which is much better. Smaller gigs where I can just take the Phil Jones briefcase are even better. :-) Jazzyvee
That must double the weight of the car?!
22.
BMW 330D SE touring (aka estate) for me. Regularly pack in PA Sub, 4x10, rack mounted head + tuner, 2 basses, box full o' bits, mic stands and a passenger, and have plenty of space. Has a bit of zip about it. Stops well too. But inability to use indicators & stay in lane is a problem. (There's a whole 'nother post about how I change behind the wheel depending on if I'm in the BMW or wife's jazz) The downside is that the top of the rear bumper has taken a beating. But that's what it's there for, eh?
My dad just bought a 10 reg BMW 320d touring and I drove them to Gatwick air port in it last night. Blimey, I have owned 3 BMWs in my time - 2 x E30 318 and an E36 328 Coupe and now I know I want one of these 320d touring. I can't afford the Business Tech edition that Dad has with all the i-drive/Sat Nav malarky but it is rather lovely.... More likely is a 58 reg: either a Mazda 6 Sport Estate (if the wife will allow an estate) or hatchback version if not, or possibly the Skoda Octavia VRS in either hatch or estate versions.
23. Thats a great idea with the grain of wood on the multi layered one. I love the way the back looks!
24. I reckon I have worked it out. I borrowed a friend's battery pack 240v inverter and this little baby powered my ashdown amp for 2-3 hours without dying. I didn't use it until it died but 2-3 hours has got to be enough eh? And all this for less than £50 notes! http://www.maplin.co.uk/portable-power-pack-225153
25. Thanks for your help David. This is really just to jam with friends rather than gig so I reckon the ashdown might be ok....a quick way to test is to jam in the garden with an extension lead and my mates' acoustics and battery guitar amps I guess!
