another vote for phil jones briefcase

I have used a Phil Jones Bass Briefcase combo for years and it has an option to fit a rechargeable battery in it or run off a car battery. I've used it on many gigs and it's very good even on a 5 string bass. Plus point is it's also great on electric/acoustic guitars. http://www.philjones.../products/?id=8 Jazyvee
Thanks for the advice although the phil jones is waaaaaaaaaay over what I want to pay. The Roland Micro cube seems the best option but I will have to spend ages saving for it by which time the summer will be over and it will sit in a cupboard until next summer I am looking to pay ideally less than £100 to allow me to use my existing ashdown tourbus 10 or possible trade that in for something around £150.

Hi Guys, Recently me and some friends took our guitars up to a field one evening and they were playing acoustic guitar and electric guitar via my mate's very cool Yamaha TH10 battery powered amp with guitar mode. It does have a bass mode but only one input so I could plug my bass in but one of us had to be left out for a bit. I think the Yamaha unit is about £250 and has far too many electric guitar focused features which I would never use and I am looking for an affordable alternative that I can play my bass through. It doesn't need to be massively loud but should hold its own against an acoustic guitar and electric playing through the Yamaha (10 watts). There seems to be loads of electric guitar or general purpose battery powered amps but hardly any bass ones. I have seen three battery powered bass amps and wondered if anyone had any experience of them. The Roland Micro Cube RX is the highest price and to be honest too high at £200 although it does seem like the best one. The other options are: The Vox AC1 RhythmVOX Bass which is £50 but only 1watt so probably underpowered for playing outdoors with other people(?) The Roland Mobile Cube at £130 which is a general purpose one but says it can do bass guitar. What do people think?! The other option is I get a 240v outlet battery pack for £70-£100 and use it with my Ashdown Tourbus 10. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_180794_langId_-1_categoryId_255206#tab1 If I wanted to work out approx how long it would last, should I assume the Ashdown uses about 10watts and then say the power pack has about 20Ah battery? Is there an easy calculation to do? Would I be likely to get a buzzing or whistling in the speaker because of the poor quality power? Any help would be appreciated!
Hi Folks, Waded through all nine pages of lovely black basses, and was surprised to not see a Stingray Stealth. Mine's pictured below, and there's none more black. Except for the ebony fretboard version, which doesn't seem to really exist except in my fevered imagination. She did have black coated strings on at one time. but my heavy picking removed the coating from one end, while my sweaty fingers removed it from the other end.
She is a beeeeaut!

Ok I have a hypothetical friend who may be, hypothetically thinking of converting their hypothetical precision to a dual pup. Question 1) I like the idea of dual precision pickups but notice that a jazz pickup conversion is much more common. Is this because it is easier or because it sounds better? What are the distinct sound and tone characteristics of a dual P pup set up when compared with a P/J setup? Question 2) Whichever pickup [s]I choose[/s] my hypothetical friend chooses, once the hole has been routed into the front of the body of the guitar, how do you drill the hole through to the rest of the wiring cavity? Surely most drills are waaayy too bulky to get any kind of decent angle to drill at 90 degrees to the face of the body?

Welcome indeed from a not-stupidly tall 30 something bloke from Hemel/High Wycombe area who is not exactly tubby (yet), but is not as skinny as he used to be!

Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Lovely colour blue you got there! What sort of paint did you use? Re: the tuners you spoke about earlier in the thread, I got the full size wilkinson tuners. I needed to grind the corner off the G String one to get it to fit but seems to be great! -
My self-built Squier Precision. Not glamorous perhaps - but I love it! Now....If only I could find a neck with a nice maple fretboard!
We headlined the re-opening of our revamped city park this weekend. They reckon there were 5000 people through the gates. It was a 40k rig.... and I was in bass heaven.
Epic beardage! \m/ \m/ -
Squier Precision MIC re-birth * FINISHED!*
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Build Diaries
OK So on Saturday I went to a friend's workshop. We did the following: Replaced the Jack input socket. Replaced the bridge Changed the old broken white scratch plate for a BWB one. Installed new knobs on the volume and tone pots. We also noticed that the Wilkinson tuners (as has already been pointed out) fitted to the headstock fine but the last one (G String) had a corner of the tuner base plate overhanging the very end of the headstock so you can see in the photos below my mate grinding the corner off to eliminate any protrusion. We then had to drill out the holes in the headstock for the new tuning pegs to 14mm. Then we tried to find a drill bit 18mm wide to widen the hole at the front but couldn't. We even took a trip down to Wickes and they did them in 16mm or 19mm but not 18. The only option left was to use a Dremel to get rid of the last few mm round the edge of the holes. We then hammered the ferrules in, and screwed the tuners to the head. Took it outside and strung it with a set of black beauties. I tell no word of a lie - the bridge didn't need any tinkering to get the action or intonation right. Is this normal!? We plugged it in and lo - there was sound! No buzzing or grounding/earthing issues. The sound is somehow softer than my Ibanez SR300 but still clearer than I was expecting given that as far as I know the pickups are the stock ones it came with and it is a fairly budget Affinity Squier. Suffice to say I am incredibly happy with the result especially as I have never done anything like this before! I think the only thing I need to do now is change the scratch plate screws and strap studs to black ones! Look forward to hearing your feedback. So now I have begun my collection! Cool eh?! -
What is the protocol if some punt(er) damages your gear? Can you ask him for money towards a replacement or do tend to accept that its your equipment and you knew the risks?
As far as the overwhelming majority of BassChat members are concerned, there is no problem. To be perfectly blunt about it, we are not going to change the way that BassChat works simply to appease a small number of people who seem to think that their minority viewpoint is more valid than that of the majority. The majority of members have approved of the changes, the minority have had their say and now it's time to move on.
I think the thrust of this thread is just suggestions to help raise a bit of money. I certainly wasn't trying to overrule any majority view. Sorry if it came across that way.
a few other forums I'm on are largely free but have an optional members area with a separate for sale section and offers etc - not a lot extra but enough to make you want to do it (and you get a free badge sent to you as well so you can appear sad to the general public as well)
Agreed - I would say you could keep most of the forum free of charge to access but charge a fiver a year or something to access Bass Chat "BackStage" (I am copyrighting that idea BTW! ). This is where you would find the For Sale, Musicians wanted, etc This would help the 'stickiness' of the site and bring value to the people who are willing to part with a £5 without alienating newcomers.

Lovely bass! Can I ask a stoopid question as a noob? What does it mean to "Hot Rod" a bass? Is it customisation in general or does it refer to a particular mod/upgrade?

Car of choice for lugging gear
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in General Discussion
Well of all the suggestions here, I think I am favouring the Octavia VRS. The only problem with them is that my mate bought one a couple of months ago and he will think I am copying him! I just have to make sure mine is just that little bit newer than his! -
Car of choice for lugging gear
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the input guys - from the bizarre to the sublime - I am glad you showed me the boot of your car open yorks5stringer. It looks more useable than when the boot is closed because the boot lid hinge seems to go back a bit into the roof. hmmm. I am surprised how many people are championing Skoda Fabia estates! I think I might need to check them out! -
So I thought I would start a thread to see what cars you all use to lug your gear around? I am getting a new car hopefully later this year as our Fiat Punto is not really big enough for lugging my bass gear around or going camping which we also do fairly regularly. I was wondering if you have any recommendations? My wife doesn't want a people carrier and doesn't like the look of most estate cars. So my options are somewhat limited! I have been looking at 09 reg Mazda 6 Sports hatchback or Skoda Octavia VRS which seem to have plenty of room but also been looking at BMW 3, Audi A4 and Alfa 159 Estates. Any hints, tips or good advice? Does anyone use saloon cars? - can any of them fit a bass guitar and 15" cone 100W kickback amp combo in the boot?

Black Strings Advice please! :)

Thanks guys. Pack of Black Beauties? Ordered! -
I work with acoustics a little and I believe it is the same reason as you should always leave at least 1 metre between a SPL (Sound Pressure Level) Meter and a noise source to get an accurate dB(A) reading. It is to do with the time/distance it takes to let the sound waves 'settle' into a regular form. Closer than a metre and the dB(A) gets artificially inflated because of the 'excitement' of the sound wave close to the source. If you listen close to the speaker (which is probably bad for your ears anyway! ) then some of the noise you hear will be this excited and unsettled waves which likely don't sound as great as the soundwaves that have settled down a bit further away.

Hi I have looked though a number of threads about strings and can't quite find the info I am looking for. I am doing up a 4 String Squier Precision Bass and want to fit black strings to it. I have noticed that there are several types of black string and I'm not sure what I need to be looking for. Some seems to be coated and others are covered with black tape of somekind. What are the differences in terms of price/sound usage etc I think I really just need medium/ medium heavy gauge 'bog standard' steel or nickel roundwounds but just that they are coloured black but it doesn't seem to be a easy as that! Can anyone recommend some options? Thanks!
With me being new to bass (3 yrs) and my first build, it's interesting our start-point should be so similar. I don't want to gate-crash your thread. I may do one of my own. I must start taking some pics. I've already started one thread about mine but starting by asking a question: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209618-upgrading-a-p-bass%3B-but-how-much-is-it-worth-spending/page__fromsearch__1 Good luck. I recon it's going to be interesting to watch each others progress and share ideas.
still here!
