Hartke Aluminium neck bass
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'm awaiting the inevitable 'Must be good for metal' post. Doh! -
I started with an Ibanez SR300 and I can't recommend it enough as a starter bass. I think it more than holds its own when compared to some other basses costing twice the price. You might even be able pick up an SR 500/700 on here for similar money to a new SR300. I may be wrong but I think the Squier Jaguar has a shorter scale length than the others you mention. Thats not a bad thing though - just something to be aware of. *Edit* Oh and welcome to Basschat!

anybody else find jam sessions boring?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
Tony Levin said "I'm a bass player, I enjoy doing the same thing over and over again" It's what we do, sometimes at least. Shrug. It makes people dance. Look at it this way - it could be worse, you could be a guitard I have small children (including one born yesterday); I would kill for regular jam sessions
+1 (Apart from the children bit) I play at church but some of my mates are in/have been in bands and I keep asking them if they want to have a jam - one of them even has access to a local community centre that we could rent out for next to nothing but it never seems to happen. Church music is great but I would like to play some different stuff from Portishead to 'tallica to Pink Floyd and whilst I could try playing along with youtube etc - I don't find that very motivational at all! -
My most recent finished DIY project. And for my older DIY projects just click on the link below to my homepage.
Thats lovely - almost looks like the light dancing on the sand on the sea bed at a tropical beach!
Oooo intriguing. Can I add my Precision special (DIY de-fret but with original roundwounds on) to the blind listening trial then? Ian
Why Not?!
Oooh looking at the list - lots of Fender P's. Crikey Hopefully see more Jazz basses on the day :/
I think the reason there are a lot of P basses is coz we are gonna have a P bass blind 'listen-off' to see who can tell what P is what and how old etc etc.... An interesting something (advice needed)
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Anthony Joseph Wiaczek III's topic in Build Diaries
I guess another option is to buy a bolt on neck with either: 1) a headstock that you like 2) a headstock that matches this one 3) a blank headstock that you can make any shape you want, then carefully measure the new neck, saw the neck off the guitar and route the neck pocket to accept the new neck. You will need to ensure that you keep the distance to the bridge in mind (or be prepared to move it) when working out how and where the neck pocket will be and how the neck will fit it. Still looks like a nice bit of wood though - If it was me I would likely try and get a bolt on neck and modify the body to fit. You got nothing to lose, apart from the price of a neck! -
Saw them on Jools Holland after hearing all the good things people had to say about them on here and they are great! They seem to mix reasonably 'classic' but gritty rock riffs with a more contemporary overall sound and only with two instruments! Fair play to them! I doff my hat...
-
Welcome Kris - good choice of bass BTW!
-
The other option is to look at what it is about the sound that heavier gauge strings give you and find another way to get that character into it. For example - would changing the material of the string say from nickel to steel or from roundwounds to flat wounds or try nylon coated strings. Find some cheap second hand strings off here, or see if anyone has any old ones they can donate or lend you and have play - you might find something you like which won't bust the neck!

Westone P bass? Defined by a cardboard box?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to itsmedunc's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
A missing string isn't the only fault anyway. It also needed a ferrule for one of the tuners. -
Rather than changing the pins use Planet Waves straps with the ratchet in the strap ends. Means you can easily swap the strap from guitar to guitar without worrying about the pins. Only a couple of quid more than normal straps! Swear by 'em!
-
I'm not an expert but having an SR300 myself I would hazard a guess that it would be able to take most strings, however heavy the gauge but having said that it does have one of the thinnest necks known to man...

Anyone ever seen a condescending advert for a bassist?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to Greggo's topic in General Discussion
Re the OP....it would mean that I might apply for it where I might not have otherwise! -
As part of this day I'd like to do a blind test of, say, Precision basses - everything from your £99 bass models to your hyper models and see if people really can tell the difference. If you own a P bass, irrespective of the brand/cost please bring it along..
Sounds like a plan!

We found Bass in a hopeless place
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
Saw 'Clean Bandit' (Who?!) on Jools Holland and they had some serious funky bass going on! Didn't particularly love the music as a whole but loved the bassline! He even gets a little solo-y bit! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01xkmyz -
Credit Card maxing out is not a clever way to buy large things if you don't already have the cash. You have to remember that minimum credit card repayments are the most profitable for the banks - look at it another way - if you bought a bass for £3,000 and only payed minimum payments for it, it could take 27years and cost £4,000 in interest (apart from the original three that you spent!) If you must get a nice looking Jazz - these get very good reviews and only cost the same as a couple of nights at a pub! What is your priority in a bass guitar?
Jonnyboy Rotten replied to redstriper's topic in Bass Guitars
If I don't like the appearance, nothing else is going to make me want to buy it. You walk into a shop and naturally you are drawn to the ones you like. From there you look at the price tag to see if you can afford it. If you can, you pick it up, play it and if you like the comfort/tone/playability etc then you buy it. If you can't see any basses that you like the look of or that you can afford then some compromise would have to be reached. -
I was thinking what else I could do to my P bass build and it occurred to me that I should fit a bottle opener to the back of the headstock so I can open beers while I am playing. Of course In reality it would be a quirky talking point more than a functional thing as clearly beer and electronics/wood don't mix well! What weird and wonderful things have you thought about sticking on your bass?

I am going to be getting a Roland Micro Basscube RX which seems to be the ideal mini combo with battery power option if you can't afford the PJ Briefcase. http://www.gak.co.uk...o-cube-rx/18487 I don't think it would be as loud as a dedicated busking set up with battery/inverter and cab, but depends where you are busking I guess.
