1. I should have said that I'm happy to field general questions about the band, it's just that I'm not part of the selection process, nor can I speak about their future plans etc
2. Capable bassist needed for high quality rock-metal covers band based in Bradford, who gig across the north. The band is a 4-piece with twin-lead guitars and everyone sings (although rhythm guitarist Rich is the lead vocalist on most songs). The band is extremely experienced and have played most of the top rock pubs, clubs and bike rallies over the years. They also write and play a few original tunes. This is my band and I'm having to retire from regular gigging due to not having enough time (young family, busy job, volunteer coach etc etc)., so you'll be replacing me. Please contact the band and not me, as I'll not be in the band soon. This band has been a large part of my life for 5 years (travelling from North Yorkshire) and there's no other band I'd want to be in. Please note that I will continue to be the bassist for Delirium's occasional acoustic side-project 'Roads', so that position is not currently up for grabs. www.deliriumbradford.com
3. About 30 mins, for a fairly big kit, including miking it up. He shifts plenty of our PA/lights/backdrop etc before that.
4.
But what are they an alternative to? Those bands are all pretty mainstream IMO.
They are now, but not so much when I was listening to Nirvana and t'Pixies in the late 80s. I think that they're in the ballpark, eg Alice In Chains were very dark and different to the mainstream rock sound when they started, even though it was still clearly rock music.
5. If you're saying, in a roundabout way, that you are too immersed in music/bass and spending far too much time doing it then you probably do need to address that. I had to do that when I started a family. But I'm sure you could find a place for music that doesn't involve spending most of your waking moments thinking about it - it's good to switch off when you're not gigging or rehearsing.
6. BUT... which is best for metal
7. Yes, but I don't think it's adrenaline in my case. We have a big PA, lights, backdrop, loads of monitors etc. Often get in at 3ish after gigs. Along with working long hours it's doing me in - so much so that I'm retiring from regular gigging in a few weeks time.
8.
The early 18-volt Cirrus BXPs ate batteries, for sure; some sort of wiring fault. The later ones were fine. I don't know about the 9-volt. They are fine basses
It happened in all the Peavey basses with that pre- and pups, they changed mine for nowt.
9.
This is true, I could stay at home and not go to the gig, but that isn't really the point is it?
Yeah, as I can't afford these kind of gigs then I don't have the choice to see them live - I wasn't implying that your situation is the same as mine. Seems like a decent bunch of musicians anyway.
10. I'm fine with that version, it's quite different and has a nice bassline. If I want the original spiky angry version I can just put Pretty Hate Machine on.
11. Yeah, I've listened to Hip Hop for years but never been into the scene, and only seen bands at festivals. The main bands I listen to are/were fairly mainstream: De La Soul, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, NWA, and the Gravediggaz. I love funny put-downs and groovey old samples.
12. Without wanting to over-generalise then I have to say that I've enjoyed most of the small-medium venue gigs I've been to in the last 10 years more than the bigger arenas and outdoor festivals. I've seen the Sisters Of Mercy a number of times (not in their 80s best sadly), and the best atmosphere and sound by far was one of the secret warm-up gigs they did at Joseph's Well in Leeds; loud but clear sound and VERY close to the band both in proximity and other ways.
13. Good plan. Play covers to a high standard and you'll get really tight as a band, then start bringing the original stuff in either in to the main band or the side project. All my bands have done some of both, although only one was a true 50/50 covers and originals, most had a focus on one either originals or covers.
14. FWIW I don't think any bass guitar should be so heavy and/or unergonomic as to give the player pain in normal circumstances. Just my opinion of course.
15.
I found this blue one for £76. Mixed reviews. Its light Is it a waste of money? I cant find a local one to try right now - Anyone tried this brand? http://www.musicians...r#productDetail
No, but it looks VERY like a Tangelwood Rebel - very light okayish basses. I have a trans purple 5-string which is just about good enough to gig with, the pickups are quite weak. I mainly like it because it's a nice trans purple and it's light.
16. For me it's cheap and cheerful - a small/medium plastic toolbox for mike, leads, FX, Power, footswitch, XLR leads, spare DI box , tools and small bits and bats. I also have a drummer's Rockbag that I use for my mikestand, guitar stands and other (spare) longer speaker leads, XLR to jack leads etc
17. Just a word to say that flats are not compulsory - I have heavily worn rounds on mine. I'd advise getting something with a bridge pickup, there's some good suggestions above.
18. Good thread! I agree that there's no magic ingredient with Springsteen and the Ramones. Springsteen wrote some good lyrics that connected with his audience, and the Ramones have fun short catchy songs that I like when I'm in the mood - the Misfits do a similar job with OTT B-movie shtick. I understand neither are anything special musically and that's fine. I'd like to think that I 'get' Elvis, but I don't enjoy his music. Plenty of people do and I'm glad for them.
19. 10+ years ago I viewed success as "as many gigs as possible". Gigging was more profitable then which may have had something to do with it. Now we try only play venues that suit us, which means about 3-4 gigs a month on average. We get better audience reactions on average. I think having band members with similar circumstances tends to work - eg us all with families - rather than being the same age. A band of single people might have more spare cash and want to socialise more, go to other gigs together more etc etc. I limit my playing at home to what I need to do - I never overpractice.
20. Always stage left for me a right-handed bassist. Best ergonomically on small stages and easier eye contact. Our lead guitarist is a left so he goes stage right - both our headstocks are away from the drums.
21. One tip for restoring rusted chrome is to use an acid to return some of the corroded metal back to metal - coke can work well for this. Also, once your neck is sufficiently clean, I wouldn't use lemon oil for further cleaning as it dries the wood.
22.
Set gain just below onset of any distortion, set EQ flat, master to taste, vol and tone controls on bass up full and take it from there.
This - as a starting pint at least. *point*, Freudian slip there...
23. I use my tube pre-amp for my main (dirty) sound, and use the EQ to tame the low end, so post preferred for me.
24. Dunlop Ultex 0.73mm for me. More grippy than most, and have a different feel - quite flexy at first but get a lot less flexy when you dig in. Really good for fast picking.
25. I've not bought a new bass in 6-7 years and been quite happy with what I've got. But now our acoustic project has taken off, and I've discovered my solid fretless sounds WAY better in the mix than my acoustic bass, I've got a bit of gas for some kind of semi-acoustic fretless that looks the part in an acoustic trio. Doh!
