2. Bass, backing vox, occasional lead vox for: Delirium - rock/alt/metal (mainly covers) Evensong - acoustic trio (mainly covers) - debut this Sunday
3. Every week I change 1 or 2 at least.
4.
Opeth (Ghost Reveries era)
No love for the newer stuff? We're gonna try out 'Coil' on a wmc audience next week. A great eclectic mix by the way
5. Minor dings, scuffs and scratches are routine and should be expected if you're playing regularly on 'the circuit' - major damage caused by punters is extremely rare. All my gigging basses have marks, and all PA speakers/lighting rig/monitors have scuffs and signs of wear and tear.
6. I don't agree but vive la difference, and if you need a bass to feed the family then I'm sure you'll find out what you can and can't rely on. If I ever had a "your life depends on it" gig, then I would choose a very simple, passive reliable bass.
7. Looks good. If I was getting a bass made for live work all I'd have would be a mid/bridge position humbucker and a killswitch.
8. All kinds of good reasons, including the angle of the wedge, the fact there probably won't be muddy/boominess due to the mid focus of the monitor and also the fact that you'll have been hearing some lovely bottom end from the FOH.
9. I should say that I rarely play my main gigging bass through the week - I play my e/acoustic at home and a beater at band practice. Might explain why the wear is shared out.
10. When they break! Keep em clean and they can last for years and years.
11. Do something about the yawning chasm and it would look really nice - a well proportioned body IMO.
12. Yes, however I enjoyed the german violin almost as much as the Strad.
13.
Yes but did you discover any punk bands?
Well I was replying to Earbrass's question about The Stooges etc., all part of my musical experiences and development.
14.
No mention of the New York Dolls or Iggy and the Stooges, either. Despite my earlier posts, I do recall having a brief period of liking the Dolls - think I've got Too Much Too Soon on vinyl somewhere.
Being a nipper at the time, I only discovered the Stooges, MC5 etc after the event.
15. Bad guitarist. As WOT said, your master volume shouldn't affect the level sent via the DI, however boosting frequencies on your EQ probably would increase the level of the signal.
16. Eyup! Get stuck in, don't be shy. Jon
17.
I might also suggest that higher-end basses have a higher level of functionality and greater flexibility due to higher quality EQs or more pickups etc etc. That's worth a lot of money to some people! Truckstop
My cheap Peavey has the same preamp and pups as their top of the range basses - one of the main reasons I bought it.
18. YES my Peavey has been my main gigging bass for quite a few years now. It's not perfect and doesn't really have a strong characteristic sound. But it's light, ergonomic, no real dead spots, no weird resonances etc. I fall about laughing when I hear about £1000 basses with all kinds of problems and bits falling off
19.
My teacher told me a couple of weeks ago that bass playing was easy if you just want to plonk it all day, but to play it well is harder than playing the guitar as a guitarist will only sound good if he has a good bassist to hold it together. Not sure if he was buttering me up, but I am happy to relate the story to the guitarists I know
I think there's an element of truth in that - bass is easy to get started on but not at all easy to master.
20. Ha ha, my first musical memories! I was young so my only exposure to the mid/late 70s scene was TV and radio. I very much identify with the DIY ethic, and it not being about having expensive gear or moving in the correct social circles. I was never part of the scene as I was a nipper but I happily followed the progression through bands like The Damned, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Siouxsie then into Sisters Of Mercy etc etc. I've picked up on bands like Magazine and the US scene after the event really.
21.
The man is doing the right thing.
If threatening, bullying, and attempting to spread misinformation (about the legality of private individuals selling 2nd/3rd/4th hand rick-style basses in the UK) then maybe he is doing the right thing. I and many others are utterly unconvinced. I almost pity the man.
22. I send a pre-EQ signal to the desk, then roll off some of the bottom and top end for my onstage sound. Works well - could you do something similar? (obviously this is for a DI signal). I also agree that many soundmen will try turn your lovely growly sound into a dull thud...
23. Nuno, I use the 4ohm version of that cab (purchased used through Basschat ), with a Hartke 3500 head. It is LOUD! My cab is on wheels so don't know if that helps/hinders the 'punch'. Anyway, I'd suggest you play around with your setup for a while. My rig is loud enough for outdoor festival gigs, obviously with PA support. Jon
