1. The type of wood makes a tiny, almost negligible difference to the amplified sound of solid electric bass guitars.
2. In my experience of playing in bands with 1xguitar/bass/drums is not to add effects to your main sound, just get a decent full range sound and make sure you're loud enough in the mix. Still use your effects for passages where they were needed before.
3. Yeah, we're playing a Street Party in Bradford today around tea time, setting up in our drummer's garden. I hope the residents like it loud
4. There's a huge difference between gigging a song for years and rehearsing it for 1.5 years - playing a song live will make or break it. I've never been in a band that took long, even with people having new babies and suchlike.
5. Quite a few of these clips are Jazz basses, or a P with a J pup...
6.
A little - mine was an Avon EB0 type with flatwounds, lightweight and comfy to play, though with the wooliest, flubbiest tone possible (mud-bucker is a quite fair description of the PU sound). Sold it to help pay for another guitar and was quite happy at the time. Now I'd quite like to own it again, just to see if it could sound good with different gear.
I've got one, passed down from my cousin who used it in a punk band many moons ago. That pickup actually squeals at high gigging volumes (I think it's a single-coil under the massive cover). Mine gets occasional use if I'm depping for a more indie/r'n'r type band, and the tiny neck and light weight make it good for playing while reading notes or following the guitarists hands... it sounds fine in that sort of band.
7. I don’t really do guilt and regret but looking back I could have made more of my first bass. It was one of the earlier Korean Squier Jazz basses – super fast neck and lovely action but sounded a bit thin. I but a beefier bridge and strings on but they didn’t change the main sound of the bass. Knowing what I know now, I’m sure that better pups would have transformed that bass.
8.
I'd have a word with your mate to the effect that you're going to sack his missus on the grounds that his kids are being mistreated and the band isn't fun anymore.
I agree with this. Don't allow yourself to be in any way complicit with the kids missing education or being mistreated/neglected.
9. I'm not at all precious and my main bass has plenty of dings - but my basses get cleaned and go on stands at gigs, and my drink always goes on a holder attached to my mike stand.
10. Yes, I think musos generally are much more precious about their gear than when I started, although I'm not sure of the reasons why. Drummer in my last band is terrified of anyone going near his mega-expensive kit which doesn't sound much different to cheap kits (just louder). Why not just get kit suitable for the job if you're playing pubs with drunk people dancing inches away from you?
11. Yes, still quite a few gigs going in South Yorkshire for the kind of money that covers your weekly expenses rather than running at profit. No, you're not going to get round the majority of gigs without some kind of car or van (unless you find a band with a van, or someone willing to ferry you round for petrol money).
12. I've seen: One of Born 2 Be Mild's old bands (Street Legal) about 3-4 times, as well as him and his mates at a local jam night. Andy's band (The Cardinals) - can't remember his username on here! JohnnyLad play at a charity all dayer with a female guitarist-singer's band. DaveEric play with the Erics and various others. ...and probably more
13. If I HAD to play a P, this is exactly the sort of thing I'd go for - slim neck, zingy pickup, tone on full all the time.
14. In theory it should be okay. I've hooked mine up to all sorts of things and it's always been fine.
15. We always apologise for Youth Gone Wild.
16. I would only buy it if you're fairly sure that you'll use. I don't think there's a massive market for 2nd hand 6s.
17.
You can disagree but i think you'll find that this kind of thing has been happening for years and will continue to happen. Ironically the very next post to yours is from another chap who suffered from the same fate. I agree its unacceptable but over time you learn to avoid these gigs/landlords.
It's very rare for it to happen in the North, and I've very rarely played anywhere down South so it may be more common than I thought. I've never left a venue without any payment, and only once have I accepted less than the full fee when a club booking [nightclub, not wmc] wasn't promoted and we were paid off at the start of the evening.
18.
Gigs like this are all part of the experience unfortunately and hopefully its a lesson learned.
Sorry but I disagree with this. It is very rare for a band to not be paid at all and is totally unacceptable.
19. Small claims court fella, should an easy win.
20. I've Facebooked the information on my own page and band page, and lots of others have as well. Fingers crossed.
21.
any exact models? was there no such thing as bass headroom in the 70s?
My cousin played a WEM ER40, 40 watts of transistor power, so no. I think they just used lots of cabs to move air rather than powerful amps.
22. I don't think I've ever drunk on a paying dep gig. However 1 pint or so would not be unacceptable for a pub gig.
23. The MAG cabs are reliable and decent value for money. Not the loudest cabs (a higher end 6x10 may be as loud) but plenty of bang for the buck. I've played through MAG 4x10 and 8x10 but only owned a 2x10, which never missed a beat.
