There's no quick reply to this. If they play more than the odd song in B then you really need a specific set of strings for that tuning whether that's a standard 5-string set or something custon made by Newtone for example. Most of the time you can probably use the BEAD strings from a 5-string set on your current bass. You will have to check that your bridge saddles can go far enough back to intonate properly, and you may have to file your nut to accommodate the new strings. I've played metal in various tunings [A, B, C, D, Eb, E] and most often used a 4-string bass 110 set for tunings of C and D, mainly to play riffs with a pedalled low C or D depending on the guitar riff. B and A have always been with a 5-string bass.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Speaking for my main band Delirium - in Bradford where the band is based we can bring quite a few punters and the same goes to a lesser extent for the rest of West Yorkshire, and Harrogate [where I live]. Further afield we genereally rely on impressing the punters that are already there, and maybe get a handful of people there that might have seen our reviews or read about us.

Bass Player required for Covers band Leeds area
Adrenochrome replied to Born to Lose's topic in Musicians Wanted
Hi mate, have you tried placing an ad on Rock of the North? has a good grapevine. Interestingly, my first ever gig was supporting Dr Feelgood at the Bierkellar in Leeds way back in the 80s. Good luck Andy
+1 ^ what Andy said, especially if you want someone decent that's got experience of playing the local circuit. -
The valves will colour the sound in a valve pre. With the exception of a 'tuner out' all of the outputs will be 'valve coloured'. What you won't get with valve pre's (DI outs etc...) is the output transformer working its mojo on your sound - you'll need to mic up for this.
Not true, you can DI from the amp's main output with the correct kit. Some DI boxes can do this, others need something else in the circuit, a big resistor I think.

Bass Effects - how many of you use them?
Adrenochrome replied to BottomE's topic in General Discussion
Yup I use effects all the time. I use them to get fairly authentic sounds when playing covers. My normal sound has just a little drive on it so I get a slightly overdriven sound when digging in for classic rock. I couldn't imagine playing the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls, or Jeremy, completely clean - it'd sound sh1te. Likewise Cochise or Would? without some drive or distortion - forget it. -
Scratch band gig this Saturday...
Adrenochrome replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
Good luck Tony! I did the same thing at the Thornhill Arms last summer, I put together a trio and I ended up singing nearly half the numbers! Good job I didn't have time to worry about the vocals. Speaking of Lemmy, we did a couple of Motorhead numbers that I'd never played live or sang before. It was a great experience -
Sshhhh, don't tell everyone about Peavey basses, let's keep them unfashionable and cheap

What does your Year Of Birth bass look like?
Adrenochrome replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Apparently this is me, a bit jazzy, a bit blocky: -
You've answered your own question. If a band is prepared 'to travel miles and miles to play a gig (with their gear, which they share) and then not even give them petrol money DESPITE the pub having a decent crowd, selling lots of drinks and making money' then that is why pubs and clubs will continue to do it. If you are unhappy with it,do something about it. Thinkhs are only the way they are because bands make it worse for themselves by accepting this protocol.
I agree; when I was doing originals all the bands would get something towards petrol, costs etc. I never did a 'free' gig except for charity. If you didn't all roll over so easily, then the promoters wouldn't be able to operate in that way.
-
Most gigs now the fee only covers the band's expenses - so I like many others do actually play for free. If you're asking would I play for a financial loss, then the answer is yes I do, occasionally for selected charities only. I couldn't afford to gig regularly and lose money from it.
We play a few of the usual suspects like sweet home but also just about to do rain by the cult which i have never heard a cover band do , but you lot may have heard ut loads who knows , also been suggested are in to the valley .
We do Rain in Angel Of Sin. It lends itself to 3-part harmonies in the pre-chorus and chorus, and goes down really well. Best of luck with it, it is still a rare cover.

Is there a problem bunging a big set of casters on a cab?
Adrenochrome replied to Ancient Mariner's topic in Amps and Cabs
...after a drunken gig you could be tempted to ride the cab down a road -
Get another Black Widow in there, even if you have to salvage it from another cab - well worth it.

Covering bass lines exactly? No need?
Adrenochrome replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I have a problem with over-simplifying bass lines. Often something significant is missed out such as when the bass stays on one note while the guitars continue the chord progression which builds tension. When the bass just follows the guitar chords, these important aspects of songs are just missed out. This is criminal in my book and part of the essential interplay between guitar and bass. In the covers bands that I see, when the bassline is changed, it's often to the detriment of the song. However, adding fills to a song like Paranoid is of course fine, especially when the fills are similar to live versions played by BS and Ozzy's band anyway. Jon -
...You cant have it both ways though, you either want flat or punchy (ie not flat). The OP suggest not flat but punchy....
Exactly what I thought. A 'flat' response might sound a bit boomy, depending on the room etc, which is something that wasn't asked for in the OP. Having plenty of headroom seems like a good idea but again 'warm' was asked for which isn't the same as clean. If a sound that doesn't have obvious distortion was meant, then that's probably a good idea for a function band, with plenty of juice to cover transients and any gigs when more volume is required (eg outdoors).

THE biggest thing (assuming decent scale length, reasonable strings, frets etc). Fact. Players that believe in Mojo, Reliccing and other assorted witchcraft will as usual disagree.

Your 5 most influential/inspirational bassists
Adrenochrome replied to grayn's topic in General Discussion
These are the people that inspired me to play bass: Steve Harris Geddy Lee Lemmy JJ Burnell Kim Deal I could list a lot more contemporary players but these are the dudes that got me into it originally -
I could have done with that a few years ago when we did a charity Smiths tribute gig. After a brief look, some of the tabs aren't 100% right, but they're not bad.
Hardly any tabs are 100% correct but they can be great for giving hints and suggestions for particularly awkward bits and/or bits that are hard to hear.

Basswood, lucite, anything like that

The BEAD strings from a 5- string set, used in BEAD tuning would usually put less tension on the neck. 2 possible problems: 1. Nut slots might not accommodate the fatter strings - however if they're sufficiently 'V' shaped you might be okay. 2. The bridge saddle on the B string might not move far enough back to intonate well up the neck. I've done it on a couple of basses in the past with no mods required. (edit for clarity)

Hi All! Just a bit of information about the Delirium fancy dress gig at the Brewery Tap in Idle on New Year's Eve. Tickets are now on sale behind the bar in the Tap. AFAIK it's an all ticket do but there may be some available on the night if there are any unsold tickets. The night will feature a slot where a couple of local singers/musicians will get up and play a few numbers with us whilst we have a temporary reshuffle. These songs will not be from our usual repertoire, so should be a bit of fun for us and the audience. Either side of this we'll be playing 2 extended sets, so it should be a great night of music for all! Thanks to Spike and the crew at the Brewery Tap for their continued support of Delirium. Jon
