When they first came out I really liked the concept. However I tried a couple and they were absolute dogs, both to play and the sound of them. They were very badly setup (don't know if that was factory or the shop?). Squier, Yammy, Vintage, Cort, Peavey etc were all much better basses for the money. The 2 OLPs that I tried may not have been typical, but they were so bad as to really scare me off.

In a word - YES! If you can send a good DI signal to the desk then the rest is just monitoring. I worry far more about my vocals / vocal monitoring (mainly backing vox). -
I bought a 2x10 extension cab about 2-3 years ago. I've had my main cab for 10 years and main amp about 6. No gas here.

The spike for a P-bass is/was about 500hz, not that low at all, and very much in the audible range for listeners. IIRC, there's poor response below 100hz (true bass), and poor response at the top end as well resulting in a sound that's very distinctive.

Absolutely - embrace your inner midrange! It's also a good way to be audible on stage without needing to be too loud. To further complicate things, boosted lower and upper mids with a slight mid-mid (sic) dip often sounds nice. I usually send a flat EQ signal to the desk anyway.

Pay To Play is a disgrace. Don't do it and don't encourage promoters to try it. -
My cousin has been a pro saxophonist for quite a while. She's done some big tours with top UK and US artists in the last few years. A couple of weeks ago she was miming backing vox and harmonica behind Craig David on the Alan Titchmarsh show - because it pays the rent.

Now I DON'T have a valve amp but I do carry a spare - a Crate Powerblock 150w class D guitar amp. It'll give me enough volume to be heard if my amp goes down, and can also cover either guitar amp or power the monitors if any of those went down. I also carry a DI box. It was £49 new and is tiny and light.

I think people confuse lower mids (ie what a P does in spades) with proper low bass (which can sound indistinct). -

Maybe as EBs can tend to be a bit mid-scooped it was all too easy to obliterate the lovely mids? Our drummer runs our PA and I have to battle to get my 'proper' sound with midrange present. Jon -
How big a amp do you need to start giging?

Assuming you have enough reasonable speakers then 100 watts is enough. More wattage is advantageous but not [i]necessary[/i]. ...and don't believe those that will try and tell you that tube watts are magically more powerful than solid state watts. It's not true. -

Nickel Elites do that for me. Some have complained that they are rough but I've never had any rough strings so far. -
In my 2 proper bands - none, there's always pride in playing/singing a song well and getting a great reaction (even for Sox On Fire). On dep gigs it's Oasis.

My extension cab (MAG 210T) was made in China. My amp (MAG 300r) was made in England. Both been VERY reliable - the only problem I've had with the amp was due to the 'interesting' electrics at a certain small pub in Stanningley blowing the power section. It's done a good few hundred gigs and rehearsals.

FWIW I'll be using a cheap Behringer active DI tonight. I think it sounds fine and is reliable.

I tried this in standard tuning and it sounded terrible as the main riff is played against an open low C. Throw some 110s on and go for it in the proper tuning. -
Neil Murray is/was probably overlooked by the general public but not really by musicians. He's been involoved in a heck of a lot of projects over the years (eg Phenomena and Phenomena II as well as things previously mentioned), and is fairly well-known in rock music circles.

I play DGCF as standard and it's perfect tension with 50-70-90-110. I can even get to drop C and it's still playable (if a little loose). I have through-body stringing and good break angles at the nut so that might help the 'feel' of it. Jon

I use a bit of everything. One of the first things is to check the key and tuning of the original, and the key and tuning that the band want. Listen like mad to the original as often as you can. Have a glance at chord charts, try and develop your own shorthand for walks/runs etc and chart out the song for bass. Even have a quick look at the TAB but bear in mind that virtually no freely available TABS are 100% correct and many are worse than having no TAB at all. I'll admit that for short notice dep gigs (eg 2 days or less), I've just grabbed whatever chords/tabs I could find and busked a version. Jon

You can with BEADG but not DEADG. If you need a low D then the useful tunings are DADG, DGCF (withe option of dropping to CGCF), or BEAD.
