1.
It would be really interesting if you could remember.....
Yeah sorry, I think Ross (ARGH) may have originally posted it up.
2.
Somebody mentioned Wal...What was there slogan? "The Sound of Wood"..., im not sure how much there electronics color the sound...i hate the thought of getting your bass sound just from the electronics....Bass sounds are suppose to be an organic thing... I would agree it is the sum of the parts, and im a big fan of preamp's etc but the starting point is the Wood...surely its the biggest factor, the whole instrument is made of it? iv had a bad day...
The available evidence strongly says that it isn't the biggest factor. Doesn't mean it's not significant though.
3.
Either way, anyone who's heard a Dan Armstrong acrylic-bodied bass will recognise that there ain't that much difference in tone between that and an all wood bass. Logically, wood type must affect your core tone. But, IMO, for the marginal difference is all but submerged by the succeeding elements in the signal chain.
Heresy! Burn him!
4. I'm sure someone did some proper research on this and found that the pickups (and their position), string length and type of strings have the major contribution to the sound of a solid electric bass. I can't remember who it was though... The examples above (same bass with different wood tops etc) do demonstrate the effect that woods can have on tone over and above that basic sound.
5. I'm no expert at melodic stuff, but it sounds good to me.
6. Nothing spectacular planned. A year of consolidation for my covers band Delirium, with hopefully a couple of our original numbers thrown in, hopefully do a couple of bike rallies/festivals etc. Maybe a couple of reunion gigs for one of my old bands, all hush hush at the moment. I'll probably do a couple of last minute, seat-of-the-pants dep gigs as usual!
7. Generally only a small amount. Of course, that small amount could be the 'missing link' in getting the perfect tone for you.
8.
I've got the whole performance on DVD, Mick Karns playing on Colin Vearcombe/Black singing Wonderful Life is really nice too.
Listening now - 'kinell, Karn slays!
9. A 4000 watt PA in a reasonable sized pub is not necessarily overkill. This is similar to what my current band uses and my last band used. There are a lot of awkward shaped pubs where having a beefy FOH and moderate backline levels will help get the sound round the pub properly and you all hear each other onstage, especially helping with monitor levels for vocals etc. If the guitards won't turn down, you'll never get anything close to your optimum sound out front.
10. I assumed the whole thread was tongue in cheek.
11. I find it interesting that opinions contrary to those held by the village elders, get a bashing. Is this a discussion forum or a 'protect the status quo' website? I notice that anyone who's not keen on Ps usually gets a thrashing as well.
12. Not exactly but when I last got a new bass, the fact that I'd be playing some metal and fairly lively rock did influence what I bought. IE there was no was I would've bought a bass that was muddy or short scale. FWIW I think the Spector should work really well, maybe you feel like change for changes sake?
13.
*Tries to bite tongue* I'll be absolutely wasted at the next gig I play, but it'll be fine, there's a 9V battery in my bass.
He he, there's 2 in mine! Have a great weekend everyone! Jon
14. It's the vocabulary for modern (exc jazz/classical) western music. Most "blues" I find boring as hell but the flattened notes in those scales crop up everywhere.
15. Mid-scooped, not warm or 'mid-heavy' at all. Good full-range detail in that the real lows and highs both projected with clarity, so went well with a lot of modern basses as described above, as well as sounding good with older basses.
16. can I go again? + Lemmy - anyone who's drunk as much as Lemmy must be teh mostest rock nr oll eva! - Jamerson - what's with all that boring 1-finger stuff? Would've done better with a nice modern active bass.
17. + Roger Waters - supportive playing makes Pink Floyd's songs sound great. Understated, and no-one really wants to listen to that poppity poppity sh1t. - Jaco Pastorius - almost all of his music has bored me and not connected with me in any way.
18. Yes I do agree but if it's within the rules I won't complain about it. I think *feelers* invite offers and that's pretty close to an auction isn't it?
19. No, I never actually sing my bass lines. BUT I do song along to just about every song we do, whether it's down a microphone or just to myself. I'm supposed to be singing the lead vocal on The Trooper (as well as the bass) but it's not easy to sing it to a reasonable standard.
20. Good topic! I especially like the descriptions which are contradictory. I dig the classic description of slap tone: "marbles in a biscuit tin".
21. Can't think of the last bass player whose playing I disliked. I've heard a few Stingrays live where the playing was average but the sound worked very well live. Not really answering the question but I've seen many very good bassists whose FOH sound was reduced to a dull thud by the soundman/woman. For shame!
22. I could suggest that you get a cheap amp/cab for the drums - but you'd be better off getting some cheap bass cabs for your PA and mike the drums with a couple of mikes. In my last band we got some Scott bass cabs for £80. You'll also need a cheap amp to power them (unless your PA has plenty of spare juice and the necessary outputs to drive 2 more cabs).
23. Actually I can see more probs than I could write down. Put him through the PA!
24.
are you related to max?
Max who?
25. Interesting choices - most of these songs have timing that have to be just right, and many covers bands don't get them right.
