Eyup Golchen, if you're enjoying playing and getting something positive from it, then there's no "loser" about it. My moments would be fairly modest: - getting paid to play and having punters singing songs I'd co-written. - joining a band playing covers I really enjoy, and with a good level of commitment that doesn't interfere with my job or homelife (too much) but still gets me out of the house for paid gigs about once a week. Perfect!

Recent reports have been good, it hasn't been a rough pub for a while. Despite having played the Blues and Worlds End many times I think my current band will be too loud and heavy for their tastes. I have to stay in tonight. Apprently the missus thinks cos I've got no gig that she can go out with her mates, leaving me to watch the kids and research what beer I've got left in the house...

Amp heads are backline, so it looks there were mistakes all round, with the gig promoter/organiser especially not doing their job.

I thought that was a characteristic of many Ps: that they can be indistinct at the extremes of their range. I think many people use heavier guage strings and upgraded bridges to help overcome this.

Not me, I love my effects. I couldn't imagine playing songs like Cochise or Starlight completely clean, they'd sound very dull.

Wow, you've got to engage with your audience I think! There is a good reason that photos may suggest you look at your frets a lot, and that's because it's usually easier to get clearer photos when you're stood still, which will often coincide with the start/end of a song.

I switch my bass and amp on. (If I'm on a boomy stage/area I might cut some bass and boost some mids, that's about it)
So what lined fretless Precision basses have/do Fender produced? I love playing fretless but i'm not so good when the lines aren't there lol.
I can't see the point in lines - dots on the top are a better view surely? (it's what I use...)
David J from Bauhaus has been a fretless P player for a very long time. He does get quite a funsome range of tones and fruity sounds from it. Some great distorted/fuzz stuff too.
and still doin it when I saw Bauhaus a few years ago. Effin great live performance!
I love my wife and part of that love is based on the fact we would never but such conditions like that on each other
Bingo! I give the missus a fair chunk of my gig money towards the housekeeping which does help. I also generally avoid buying kit I don't need; in the last year all I've bought is a couple of sets of strings and a new microphone.

Leave it in.

Whichever option you do choose, you should still laugh like a maniac afterwards.

Ditch these losers a.s.a.p. Life is too short to waste on people like this.

Over quite a few years: 1. Laney 50w combo 2. Peavey Century head + HH 4x12 cab (wonderful sound! wouldn't fit in my next car though...) 3. Laney DP300 head + 4x10 cab (very good rig but amp would switch off with dodgy pub electrics) 4. added Peavey 1x15 black widow cab 5. added Peavey Megabass head (got rid of Laney head) 6. added Ashdown rackmounted MAG 300r head (as Peavey head had gone bang) 7. added Ashdown 2x10 cab (got rid of very heavy Laney 4x10)
If looks didn't matter, we'd all still be playing 60's inspired Jazz basses with varying pimped out electronics for our individual needs.
Some of us 'almost' do. My main bass has a jazz(ish) shaped neck and ergonomic body with 18v preamp. It's just made by Peavey and costs a lot less than an F.

Acklam Iron and Steelworks - big door to load in by the side of the stage, easy!

A Marshall Superbass sounds very rude when cranked but would it have enough bottom end for your liking?

What work do you carry out on your bass at home
Adrenochrome replied to d-basser's topic in General Discussion
1) Most things that don't involve electrickery or frets - I happily do set-ups, change bridges/nuts/strings, tweak trussrods etc. Cleaning/polishing/treating wood, fretboard etc. 2) Generally horizontal. 3) Yes, keeping the bass horizontal and secure in my madhouse can be awkward sometimes eg when changing strings in a hurry. -
Okay, so I got my MAG 300r head about 4.5 years ago. In that time it's done 200+ gigs and a similar number of rehearsals. It's had some fairly rough treatment, although lived in a rack it's entire life. Finally, something has gone wrong. Yes the bulb in the VU meter has expired. A quick phone call to Ashdown and they sent a new bulb, free of charge that arrived very quickly. I have ZERO spare cash so I'm delighted that their product has performed so well over the years, and the (minor) repair will cost me zilch.

a) A 2x10 won't necessarily be any brighter than a 1x15. It depends on a lot of factors. The 300w Laney won't necessarily be louder than the 100w Kustom but has more scope for driving an extension cab if you ever need it. No but I've done a loud rehearsal with that amp into a 4x10 cab and it was plenty loud and sounded fine. I've used Laney gear in the past and found it to be very good value. c) You can add an extension cab to a combo. BTW You're welcome to try my Ashdown 2x10 cab if it'll help in your decision making (ie whether 2x10 speakers is enough).
It's a series wired extension so adding it will reduce the power output but will INCREASE the actual max dB SPL. Not by as much as with a parallel wired extension unless the internal speaker is particularly feeble. You don't hear electrical watts, you hear Sound Pressure Level. Alex
Ah - I'd never come across cabs linked that way before. FWIW I have a 300watt amp putting out 180w into an 8ohm speaker and 307w into 2 x 8ohm speakers. The latter set-up has been loud enough for large clubs and outdoor rallies/festivals, with decent PA support.
