1.
I take it that most of you posting here are talking about original act's? When I was playing in an original act, we had our own sound engineer that we took from venue to venue..... most of the other serious bands we were playing with done the same... and most venues accepted that this was the norm.
No, a covers band, but we've done a lot of charity events, and quite a few festivals and bike rallies etc. My bass has often been reduced to an inaudible thud ("it's only bass!").
2. Ey up Charles! There's quite a few basschatters local to you. Jon
3.
Also, since I own and use active basses, you maybe ought to use your ears and abandon that magical fender setting. You needn't crank the bass to 11 on my channel tonight.
+100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
4. Tiny HiWatt practice amp at Certificate 18 in York. Completely inaudible onstage but was DI'd and sounded great through FOH when I stepped off the front of the stage. Silly thing was, I could easily have brought a small bass rig but had been told that "bass rig is provided" - yeah okay then..
5. Shhh, don't tell everyone. Keep 'em untrendy and affordable  Jon (long term user of Peavey basses and amps/cabs)
6. I chart things out by hand using my own shorthand - it does help! Learning the words for vocal cues helps as does repeated listening, even when doing other tasks.
7.
Hi All the band thing for me is just something my tutor wants me to try, but i doubt that it will be a permananety thing, hence not want ting to get something too 'heavy/loud/pricey just yet.
Although the others here aren't wrong in that getting a powerful amp will do no harm and mean you don't have to upgrade, you could get by with something that puts out 100-200 watts into a single 8ohm cab and would drive your Ashdown 210 just fine. I've played some big outdoor gigs with an amp that puts outs just 180w into 8ohm and 300w into 2x 8ohms cabs.
8. When I was playing original stuff like that BITD I played most songs fingerstyle, and most of those using standard 2 finger with occasional 3 finger style. I also made sure my bass wasn't too low! I really only used a pick for specific songs that needed a very strong attack combined with palm-muting. Using a Powerball would probably help build the correct muscles and improve blood supply, stability of the joints etc.
9. I use an antique wood restorer which is based mainly on tung oil.

11. Friday - fantastic AOS gig in the function room at the Broadfield in Sheffield. Packed out, and we equalled the record for the bucket collection [to top up our fee]. 11pm finish and home at a decent time. Saturday - got stiffed for the first time EVER. Booked with Delirium to play a club in Knaresborough (Fusion), very early set-up and soundcheck to allow time for support band who didn't turn up ("We Are Painted", thanks for wasting my valuable time that could have been spent with my kids, you little bedwetters). No punters came and the gig was eventually cancelled with us being sent away with £50 to barely cover our fuel costs. Seems the promoter didn't do much, erm, promoting. Yes that's you "Vampyre_Connections". I would advise extreme caution if even considering dealing with him. And yes we could easily have got a paying gig at a pub. And yes we were on a flat fee as I would not entertain taking a cut from door fees, so technically we're still owed plenty of money.
12. Zoom B2 multiFX with different patches having different output levels. Perfectly balanced outputs at the click of a footswitch. £35 from ebay including fantastic muted tuner.
13. Clarky's been a great bloke to deal with. Couldn't be more helpful.
14.
I think it's down to context. If it's a 'working' band with a band leader, depping is fairy nuff. If it's a BAND in the old-school three-against-the-world sense... they should have asked you first. IMO.
+1. I can understand the guitard wanting to do the big home town gig but should defo have discussed it first.
15. Online for me. I can't afford not to use the massive savings. The last 3 new basses I bought weren't setup by the shop, even though they said they would when I placed my order. Nothing lost by buying online for me.
16. I'm not an expert at that style of music but it sounds good to me. Do you have a band Z? (You have add requests from my band and me)
17.
A cheap rubber mat
Rubber car mats can work well IME.
18. We had a gig in a marquee a month ago. A stage was provided. The 'stage' was only just big enough to get the drums and the guitar head (not cab) on. We got the organisers to find some wooden pallets that we put the giuitar cabs and my bass rig on. They also found some tarpaulin that we put out pedals/mikestands etc on. It worked fine for us; we weren't happy with having our cabs at ground level on grass.
19. I have/had much PV gear over the years, and sorry but no-one is getting their hands on the gear I've got. I love it!
20. How very dare Faith express an opinion on a discussion forum! (and no I can't play HMWYRS either)
21.
I rather like Renegades, which is their 'covers' album - although some are relatively straight covers some are much further removed, like the final track Maggie's Farm - a classic RATM hard-grooving riff monster with lyrics by Bob Dylan.
A fabulous album! I play it more than the other RATM albums but that might be cos Rage's own tracks still get played in the pubs/clubs etc so I hear 'em fairly often.
22. Is it possible that he's making up some of the secrecy stuff for a laugh? He must get bored with the same routine interview questions.
23. mmmmm, grill'd/grilled meat...
24. I cut bass frequencies and boost both low mids and high mids. The sound guy adds some bass for the punters to hear. Embrace the mids!
25. Not at all, we've been offered far more gigs than we could ever play. Most pubs round here have full music licenses.
