1. I had a dep gig on Tuesday tea-time. I got the setlist on Monday afternoon. This was the first gig that I've been genuinely nervous for in about 2-3 years. It was a full 2 set gig and I'd only played 3 of the songs before and only knew the bass parts to another couple. Some like Vertigo I managed to wing completely because they're songs I'd heard enough times and I managed to grab a few chord charts and tabs (hastily corrected) from t'interweb. The gig actually went okay and I didn't cause any major train wrecks. It would have been nice to have had more than 1 evening to prepare though....
2. Shame but the better covers bands will be booking well into next year by now - it does show that we've not recommended dross though! Jon
3. With a 2x10 and a 1x15 you should have plenty of volume and clarity from that amp. I'd suggest getting better [more efficient] drivers for the 2x10, and then possibly the 1x15.
4. Ed, I'd recommend Shameless ( www.myspace.com/shamelessyorkshire ), Scooby ( www.myspace.com/scoobyrockuk ) or Styckleback ( www.styckleback.co.uk ) . These bands are all really lively and localish. Dunno if any are free but they're all decent bands. Jon
5.
Most of the players I admire are DI'd anyway, and the backline is largely irrelevant.
agh! That's tantamount to BC Heresey! You'll be telling us that non-Fender basses are available next!
6. My Ashdown MAG 210 is barely average sounding but it does okay for onstage monitoring. It was very cheap when new, light, fairly compact and does a job at a price. It's a one-handed carry for me so good for rehearsals and tiny venues etc.
7. Including encores, we do 30 in AOS and 27 in Delirium. 45-50 mins and the about an hour. No set formula but most pub audiences don't go for more than 1-2 slow ones per set IME.
8. Good morning Rob! There are many of us here with young kids who've managed to still keep busy gigging.
9.
good luck with white hart. we play there and it's usually a good crowd. I'd come but we're gigging in clitheroe that night.
Cheers fella, we've played once each at the Talbot and White Hart. Both really good gigs; a much bigger crowd at the White Hart. jon
10. I can only afford to change strings every couple of years. I keep them in reasonable nick by fanatically cleaning them before/after every set, practice session etc. They don't quite sound new but are okay for me.
11.
I'm not able to play back your sound file. I keep getting an error message that says "The input media format is invalid".
+1. I'll try again later.
12. I've got a couple of newer Arias. Absolutely fine and gigworthy. Bass you're looking at retails for £230+ so probably a good price.
13. Dunlop Ultex. The material is very different to the usual slippy nylon type picks and springs back nicely. I use 0.73mm which has similar stiffness to a 1mm nylon pick but it's a lot more responsive. I'm surpised more people don't use them.
14. In my current band (finishing at the end of August) I do/did. The lead singer did almost as much through most of that time. In my next band I definitely won't be and I'm happy about that .
15. Yeah, I've always used effects in my covers band. Can you imagine the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls without a bit of Wah? For most songs in my current band I don't really need effects but I use a Zoom B2 and it gives a very handy muted tuner between songs. It was only £35 of evilbay so it was no huge investment.
16. Still do! One of my ex-guitarists had a beautiful LP junior copy, and the guitarist form my band Delirium has just received his left-handed Explorer. Here's a ropey mobile phone pic:
17.
I'm that kind of player, too. I drop the pickup pretty low to tone it down a bit.
me too, all my neck/mid pups get dropped down.
18. I'm no expert but... I gigged a Marshall Superbass head and even through a sealed Marshall 4x12 bass cab it was shy in the bottom end at gigging volume with a loud band. Very entertaining in most other respects though. Would it be an option to upgrade the 4x10 drivers to something more efficient? It'd keep your rig to a manageable size at least.
19. Send a pm to Andy of the Cardinals [basschatter "Bassmonkey"], he's very local to Pudsey. I'll keep an eye out on our local resources for any news in the meantime.
20. Due to many factors including the impending marriage of our lead vocalist and frontperson Vikki-Lea, AoS is being put on ice. If anyone wants to catch us live, your last opportunities are: JULY 18th WHITE HART, Burnley 25th ROSE & CROWN, Cleckheaton 31st THE BROADFIELD, Sheffield AUGUST 8th STEELWORKS CLUB, Acklam 15th GOLDEN LION, Pudsey, Leeds 21st QUEEN VIC, Northowram nr Halifax 28th THE BRIDGE, Huddersfield 30th THE TARN, Yeadon, Leeds (enormous piss-up and farewell party, collecting money for RotN to the Core cancer charities)
21. Glad it went well. I might have popped down myself if I hadn't been in Stourport all weekend. Andy - say hello to Bry for us! [ex bandmate]
22. Well, guess why I use cheap cabs and have my DI post-EQ? Yep, the audience hears the PA, so your stage rig is basically just a monitor.
23. Timmy C uses a B string between 110 and 120 for recording/playing live. I prefer fairly light strings but then struggle like hell with faster stuff if the string's flopping about all over the place. In standard tuning I use 40-100, Eb I use 45-105. In Delerium we use D-tuning with some songs in drop C. A 50-110 set does fine but I'd go no lighter for the C string.
24. In short, no. A heavier gauge of exactly the same string will generally sound brighter on the same bass with same tuning etc.
