A contentious issue. Many will not have a word said against the holy [i][b]F[/b][/i]. I think there are much better value instruments around from Aria, Ibanez, Peavey, Yamaha etc etc. 2nd hand for that budget you could get Stingrays, Sterlings etc also. Of course, if you gotta have a Fender then a Fender it is. Money spent on a decent musical instrument is still an infinitely better use than spending it on cars/drink/nose candy etc IMO.

For rounds I've had good experiences with Ernie Balls, check the gauges on the packs though as some are a bit 'top heavy'. I've recently put Elite nickel on my main bass but only done 2 gigs so too early to see if the zing will last. They feel excellent under the fingers.

Quite possibly, it was [i]the[/i] replacement bridge available at the time. Kind of like how Biro or Hoover are associated with ballpoint pens and vacuum cleaners.

But I'm sure there will have been plenty of people in my position at the time who did the same thing and saw improvements to very poor instruments.

It's quite simple. The first bass I owned was a plywood Squier Jazz. No bottom end and no sustain, plus the saddles moved when I played (too) hard through my weak practice amp. This was well before I had the interweb, and at the music shop in Leeds the only replacement bridge was a Badass. It was easy to fit, it improved the sustain and I wore my own grooves in the saddles by practising a lot. It was all that was available and it worked.

Cut some bass, boost the low-mids to compensate. Works for me and sounds good through FOH also.

Bronco/Mustang style basses don't [i]have[/i] to sound clanky. A lot can be done with set-up, diffferent strings, different gauge strings, upgraded bridges etc.

No I don't, however I could easily find out. I've played in different tunings over the years, so the exact name of the 6th fret on a particular string becomes pretty much irrelevant. I can move around the fretboard quite easily and I can move things around and (usually) transpose easily.

Me 13. I did play Loose-forward at Uni in League so that fits okay.

Easy - the single/video version was released in a different tuning to the album version. I don't know if it's a different recording or pitch-shifted. There's a few songs where the single is at a different pitch and/or tempo to the album version.

We use 2 x db opera sub 15 and 2 x Wharfedale 15" tops, all active. Cheap Behringer desk (about 16 channels?). Unknown 400 watt amp driving cheap Behringer monitors, singist also has in-ear monitors. Not the biggest system in terms of watts, but is very efficient, clear and loud. It's way better than a previous setup we had that was many more watts.

I sweat a lot and keep mine going for ages with regular wiping/cleaning, eg between sets in a normal gig. I use a fastfret cleaning device, but I keep topping it up with WD40 as its the same stuff rather than buying new packs of fast fret.

I've had bad experiences in the past buying 2nd hand heads on the open market. However I'd suggest that buying from a trusted forumite would be a heck of a lot safer, and you'll get a lot for your money. <£300 a joke? - absolute cobblers. My MAG 300r was only about £170 and has done hundreds of gigs and practices, travelling the length of the country, and has never missed a beat. I think the rack was about £40, so total spend of £210.

It needs to be done face to face, but as few people as possible; probably the band leader or founder member.

If it was a club or function you should expect more depending on the circumstances and size of venue. Our biggest club gigs pay 5 times as much as our smallest pub gigs (which we possibly make a small loss on, but do for fun)

My Peaveys are fantastic for what I paid for them - so I have to say Peavey. If I had more money, then the only bass in many years that had a sound that made me sit up and take notice was a graphite Status, so I'd be looking into them.
