1. Of course it's 99% fashion. The only other reason I can think is if the sticky gloss finish on the back of a neck is worn down to something more playable.
2. If you're on a budget the Samson Airline is a good option. Mine has never failed. If you're a sweaty jumping around kind of person like me the bugs that attach to the body of your bass might work better than belt packs (can fill with sweat or the lead from bass to belt pack fail).
3. I have a Boss CE3 which I think sounds lovely. However I rarely use it as I use the chorus in my Zoom B2 for convenience [the well-lit muted tuner is the mutts' when changing basses etc]
4. I've played only a handful of larger gigs for which I've had to sign a contract on behalf of the band, and then only agent's fees were ever deducted from the total amount. I don't recall any 'club' bands having PRS fees deducted either so I think it's unusual. Jon
5. We take just over an hour to set-up and about 20 mins to soundcheck. We have quite a bit of kit with everything (inc. all drums) miked-up, plenty of lights etc.
6. Looks fun mate! I take it you get enough bite from the p pup to balance the mud?
7. I hope it all works out for you fella. Jon
8. I don't know them personally, so it's impossible for me to actually HATE them. I think they do reasonable singalong punk in a similar vein to a lot of UK punk from the late 70s... I know it's not into the valley but it's okay nonetheless.
9. I'm not sure you'll get exactly what you're looking for. Good fingerstyle technique learned from whatever genre would help a lot I'm sure (fast 16th note funk?).
10. Yup, a couple of charity ones during the summer and Alchemy in September which is late for summer really.
11. Mazda Bongo 8-seater MPV/Campervan w/pop-up roof. Enough room in the back for all drums and all my bass rig plus a few lights/monitors etc. Also doubles as my hotel room occasionally.
12.
...Are there any decent basses for about £200?
My Peavey Millenium AC bxp was 200, I think it's now 250. Light, ergonomic, fast 5-bolt neck, 18v pre with treble/bass/mid/pan/vol, 4 individual finger bridges. Many people won't look at them because they're gear snobs.
13. Probably bad electrics at the venue. One of my favourite small venues in Leeds has the same problem such that I can't use any bass with single coils - on my fretless I can only use the p pup for instance.
14. ...all of the above and play with other musicians. Jam with some colleagues after work for instance, great fun and excellent for your development. Jon
15.
Terrific. Thanks Jon. Can I visit you/you visit me tomorrow? I'll be back in Harrogate late afternoon.
Phil, tomorrow I'll definitely be in late afternoon onwards so just pop round whenever. It might be easiest if you just take the bass with you and try the string(s) at your leisure as my boys will no doubt be creating havoc at mine.
16. Phil, my rarely used 5-string has LaBella deep-talkin' flats on, gauges 43-128. You're welcome to buy/borrow the B string or the lot as I'll put rounds on if I ever need it again for gigging. They've all been trimmed to fit my Tanglewood (Bass Collection copy) so you'd just have to try it/them and see.
17. Yup, been gigging solidly with my MAG 300r for about 4 years. My main cab is a Peavey Black Widow 15 cab; the Ashdown MAG 210 cab I also sometimes use can be a bit 'indistinct'.
18.
Yep - that was me! Sorry for the massive delay in replying...I haven't seen this thread on the view new posts page for ages! How's it going?
Great! Playing everywhere from the North-East to the South-West. Have you got a regular gig at the moment? Jon
19. Thanks for that! I'm used to new strings losing their zinginess straight away when I get my sweaty paws clamped round them so that's no big issue for me. The fact that they feel nice is probably more important on 2-3 hour gigs. ta, Jon
20. Okay, after 2.5 years use, the strings on my main bass are in a poor state and I'm going to buy some new ones. I can probably go up to a budget of £20 inc. delivery The bass is a Peavey Millenium AC bxp, 34" scale, thru-body stringing, tuned EbAbDbGb. I like(d) the strings the bass came with, I believe they are Peavey 45-105 nickel, tension seems just right for Eb tuning. I play with what I'd describe as 'average' neck relief and action. I play 50/50 fingerstyle and pickstyle. Not looking for extremely bright or deep sound, somewhere in between. My left-hand technique is heavy - I can wear frets quite fast. Any recommendations gratefully received as I don't buy new string very often! (eg I've seen some D'Addario nickel 45-105 that looked like they'd do the job and are within budget)
21. It's also quite possible there's a better speaker in your Carlsboro combo. The old speaker may also be more sensitive (ie louder for a given input level).
22. I wipe off/mop up the sweat from my bass after each set and also wipe the strings down with fast fret. Funnily enough I don't get any build up of crud on basses I play regularly and I play every day at the moment (gigs/rehearsals/home practice).
23.
Although my Trace 122H could hardly be classified as cheap tat, in the grand scheme of things, it's at the lower end of the scale of what one would consider giggable.
There are actually a lot of people gigging regularly with much worse gear than that. Whatever works for you is, by definition, right for you. There are worse things to spend your money on!
24. I'm depping for a band that play in D-tuning with occasional songs in drop-C. I'm using 50-110, roundwound, nickel somethings I got cheap from Evilbay. It's absolutely fine but I wouldn't recommend going thinner than 110 for the 'C'. jon
25. I don't agree with a lot of the above. I'd suggest that reducing the gain on your channel on the desk a long way is going to make you very quiet when you're not popping and slapping. I think you need something to ensure that you're sending a more even signal to the desk whether it be a cheap compressor or multi FX with compressor built in.
