1. Are you sure the strings are really 'dead'? Sounds fishy to me.
2. The band is good. Give the audition your best shot and take it from there. I'm sure you could do your bass studies later if you wanted to.
3. Should say the vocals were good throughout, I just didn't enjoy the style or content of some of the girlie singers' songs.
4. I enjoyed the Hold Steadys the most - I'd not heard of them before. I thought Martha and the Vandellas performed very well considering their age. Duffy's/Adele's/Lilly's material really left me cold, and Annie's songs were very downbeat and didn't fit in well with the NYE 'party'. Stuff like the Ting Tings was okay - fairly lively pop music to get people dancing. Not music I'd buy myself but nowt wrong with it. Overall pretty average and not much of a celebration of anything.
5.
What? Only a kidney? Not your soul?
I thought we all sold our souls a long time ago? I know I did.
6. I don't think there's anything wrong with an instrument that is worn. I think that producing a new instrument, then spending time/resources to then damage it [cosmetically I'll admit], then charge more for it whilst claiming that it's been kissed by fairy dust, or mojo, or whatever is the big con. It all reeks of fashion to me - Emperor's New Clothes.
7. Phil is often referred to as being 'Irish' in the press etc (as are people like Shane McGowan) so not really a big mistake. As a celebration of great british bassists I think it's a fine idea. I agree it's tough to compare a flamboyant bassist with someone like Roger Waters who was great at supporting the song.
8.
Have to say i got one about two months ago and so far i've been very disappointed with it . No matter what i do with it it still sounds very digital.
Is this the B1? If you want to sell it, let me know by any of the usual methods. Jon
9. I'm alright! Seriously I'm not a genius musician whose gonna get frustrated by the level of my fellow band members, nor do I think I have albums worth of original material in me bursting to get out.
10. It's worth noting that virtually all the TAB on the net is wrong in someplace or another. It can be useful as a starting point/guide but nothing can replace giving the songs a good listen. BTW Celebrity Skin is quite fun, it has a few greasy slides in it.
11. Hello, good evening, and welcome! Loads of people here more than ready to chit chat about bass, amps, kids, work, beer, food etc etc Jon
12.
I had one of these, great punchy amp. Good luck!
Have a free bump. This was my first ever bass amp, eleventy years ago! Nice sound for a practice amp.
13. Hi Adriano, Enjoy the forum! Jon
14.
i am a newbie but enjoy the breadth of the forum topics and the uk based chat i am not keen on TB but am a long standing member of hcbf and ebassist bloody both mate!
ah Mr Crow. I remember you, I used HCBF for about 7 years but didn't post all that often.
15. No I'm not a member, I don't think it's for skint but active bassists like myself. I have searched for iinformation before though.
16. I know, I'll list a body shape, then everyone who has that bass will fall out with me? I like the look of the Warlock shape but I didn't find it that nice to play. I like the shape of my EB0 but the top horn gets caught inside my buttons when I wear a shirt... just a little quirk I guess.
17.
Neither I'm afraid. It's opposite the New Inn, but I can't remember the name!
Red Lion p'raps?
18. In the past few years I've bought loads of band stuff from Thomann and I got my last bass cab from Soundslive. All very cheap and very quick. I buy fairly small stuff from wherever's cheapest in UK, Europe, or even strings from the US occasionally.
19. Hi Jon, You've come to the right place! For about £150 you can get a very playable, reliable bass, suitable for playing in public [should you ever want to]. Many basses made in the Far East offer incredible value for money. Don't forget to allow plenty in your budget for an amp of some sort, strap, stand, tuner, lead etc etc.
20. I use 2 basses for all my normal gigs. I use different patches on my multi FX to match the gain going into the amp.
21. I don't know how expensive the bass you want to repair is but I fixed a cheap Tanglewood by filling the hole with polyfilla, then before it set I screwed in the strap button and left it for a couple of days. The repair has lasted 5+ years.
22. For £250 I'd jump on it, 'cos I need the money. My NYE dep gig has been cancelled.
23. I couldn't advise you to do anything other than get your wrist sorted first. Not a popular answer maybe but the right one.
24. ...turns out that the music shop handling the return (PMT) forgot about it for a month then sent it to Peavey. Anyway, I've had the bass back for a week now, and I'm gigging with it tonight. The pups and preamp and all wiring has been replaced (along with new batteries), and all the new bits are covered by a new 1 year warranty. I'm pleased with the outcome as it hasn't cost me a penny but I've obviously been inconvenienced a fair bit. Slightly more plusses than minuses for me I think.
25. If you wanted to buy new, then this Ashdown Electric Blue combo could do the job for home practice and also jamming with others if you wanted to: Electric Blue Combo
