Dunno, I never did all that. I got told to learn some songs and come up with some basslines from day 1 so it was in at the deep end for me. Playing lots of gigs has always helped my development.
-
If you booked the venue yourself why is there a promotor involved? (apologies if I've mis-read your thread)
-
I'd be interested to know the same, as the flats on my fretless just don't quite have enough top end for me.
-
Okay, so I'm a heavy-handed player who switches between fingers, pick and playing over the bridge for some songs to up the frets for others (right hand). We play a lot of pubs with BAD electrics. So I use a Zoom multi FX with compression and noisegate on all the time. This also has a handy muted tuner. Out of about 30 songs we do I use chorus for 1 or 2 songs and distortion for 1. The clean sound with comp still sounds like my bass and really evens things out. A simple set-up that works for me.

I've never had a lesson on guitar or bass. However, I studied music at school up to age 16, and I read/watch/copy/listen pretty much every day and so I'd never pretend that I'd come up with all the answers myself. edit for piss-poor spelling

Rush / Geddy Fans... Isolated Tom Sawyer Bass Track!
Adrenochrome replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
That was good listening as a post-gig chill out. -
Currently, Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benetar 'cos our girlie vocalist sings it really well. Previously it'd be Bored by Deftones, Replica by Fear Fatory or possibly Will You? by Hazel O'Connor.
Ummm, how about everyone playing because they enjoy playing and the interaction with others?
+1, You've nailed it there fella!

My band have 2 weekends off over Chrstmas and only 1 gig in about 4 weeks over the whole Festive period so I'm depping on New Years Eve. Pay's good but I have to learn about 30 songs, so guess who's getting his cheat sheets ready! I'm looking forward to not doing loads of band stuff and spending time with the family but my band are too quiet for my liking hence the NYE dep gig.

I don't have the combo but I do have the cab and amp which I used last night in a venue with a very small area to set up in. I was going through the PA but there was plenty enough volume from this set up to be heard okay.
-
DIing to the desk is fine but you'll need good monitoring, so you might as well have a rig on stage to do that anyway. For example, main gigging rig is an Ashdown MAG 300r amp (£229 new), and a Peavey bx 1x15 cab (£100 used). The DI on the amp is good enough to use for big gigs and recording. The Peavey cab is great and plenty loud. (I do also use a 2x10 Ashdown cab as well for some venues).

IME soapbars are almost always humbuckers of some kind. Back to the question, I find single coils almost useless in the kinds of pubs we often play with quite appalling and inconsistent power supplies that hum and buzz (Saturdays' wandered between 220 and 260v). SO generally humbuckers for me fairly close to the bridge (I hate muddy humbuckers). Having said all that I LOVE the sound of a good jazz with both pups on full.

Welcome to Basschat! As for the bass dilemma, both those basses are out of my league (pricewise). I've played a decent newish jazz though, and while it was super-comfy, the sound wasn't noticeably better than the old squier jazz I started on about 10 years ago. Jon

Yorkshire Bass Bash - 15th Feb '09 (NOON - 5 PM)
Adrenochrome replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in Events
15th would be easiest for me. I have a gig on the 8th, but don't particularly plan around me as I don't have any fancy gear to show anyway! -
And to add to the geographic craziness, I'm three miles inside Yorkshire, but I have a Lancashire postcode. Winds everyone up no end... Seeing as we have a good selection of 'locals' on here, can we have a roundup of good live music venues? That's probably needing a new topic, but let me know if there's been anything similar on here...
It'd be quite a long round up, as there are many venues and many bands have varying experiences at them all. We played Big D's in Todmorden earlier this year and had an 'interesting' time. The bar manageress made us set up in a stone tunnel out of site of the bar and away from the rest of the punters who were seated. The drums were deafening and the sound was awful. Our soundman had to set up where the punters were so he couldn't see or hear us [apart from the sound he was putting through the PA speakers]. Other people like the venue so I don't know if it was just a quirk that we had to set up where we did?

How many of you are converted (successful) guitarists?
Adrenochrome replied to Jamesemt's topic in General Discussion
Yep I was a self-taught guitarist. I never gigged properly though - just parties at University etc. I've been playing bass for almost 10 years though and playing bass has given me enough confidence to actually fill in on guitar in one of my bands a few years ago. I massively prefer bass! -
+1 Floppy and thuddy. There a set in my cupboard at home not doing anything if you want to try em out? Guages are always quite fat; I think mine are 55-115.
I didn't realise your band was AOS, I was looking up your MySpace site the other day and realised you play gigs in the area I grew up in. If I'm up visiting relatives next time you play in Cleckheaton I'll try to drop in the Rose & Crown and say hello. I was also thinking of getting a few ideas from your set list as I'm also working with a female singer at the moment!
That'd be great. Phil the new landlord at the Rose & Crown is a top bloke. He used to book us regularly when he had the Coniston in Bradford, and has now booked us for his pub in Baildon as well as the Rose and Crown. You're welcome to borrow ideas; we didn't write any of the songs! Most of our set is tailored to our vocalist's singing style, so you won't find any rapping / shouting or very rapid-fire lyrics as none of that suits her.

Harrogate sounds good to me! I don't have any exciting gear to bring though...
-
1. We only play covers. 2. We work our socks off. 3. Pretty blonde singer with a great voice [maybe this should be number 1!!].
-
I'm on course for an average of 1 per week this year, not bad considering we had 2 enforced breaks to get in a new drummer then later a new guitard. We'll aim for about 60 next year which about all we can manage with family stuff to fit in as well as work.
-
Maybe it's the top 40 from a punters, or maybe guitards perspective? I think there are some good, distinctive lines in there, I've played many of 'em in my time.
-
so that means you gotta get out there and play basses?
Definitely! And set your own priorities - if you're playing long gigs then ergonomics may well be more important than if you play short gigs fer instance.

Hello from Yorkshire. Enjoy.
