1. No, not even close. Not because I have a very expensive car [Mazda Bongo MPV/camper], but because I have cheap basses.
2. I reported this auction at lunchtime - I wonder how long it'll take ebay to sort it? How's this for an outlandish claim "this amp used to be my grandad"!
3. The sound of the 'Ray was probably appropriate for those songs. I usually love the sound of 'Rays so I wasn't knocking it at all. It was pleasing for this (skint) semi-pro player to see there is something else available if my Peavey pre-amp issue doesn't get sorted.
4. Okay, so last night myself and my drummer went to a jam night in Harrogate. The 2 basses there were a newish 3 band Stingray with maple neck and a newish Squier VMJ. I actually preferred the sound of the Squier. Now I suspect that the the 'Ray may not have been EQ'd and/or played in a style to suit my tastes [it sounded a little flat, and was mainly being used for blues and rock'n'roll]. But the point is I thought the Squier sounded great and I noted it was very even between the strings and up and down the neck, the sort of thing that lets down some cheap basses. It's good to know that there are some very nice sounding affordable basses available.
5.
I just listened to it on YouTube.... what a dreadful song
People in WMCs up and down the land will be tutting in outrage... I think it's decent pop-rock or whatever you want to call it. It's not something I listened to at the time really.
6.
Try this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tokai-TB48-Thunderbi...id=p3286.c0.m14 Tokai are reknowned for being good quality (better than Epiphone) although I have not personally played this model £279 + £15 for a gigbag
Yup, there's your answer. The Tokai is set neck and it's a better bass than the Epi version.
7. On Halloween/1st Nov we're playing Ebeneezers [private booking] and the Cherry Tree both in Peterborough. Both of these have bands but I'm not sure that Ebeneezers has many live bands on at the moment. ...and yes it is a long drive for me but I'm kipping in my van to keep the costs down.
8. I think Woody, Honky and Metallic are fairly good terms to represent sounds...eg a Les Paul can sound honky, which I really don't like. As a bassist I fear mud and I'd be scared to play a bass without a bridge pup or at least a mid position pup with a fair bit of bite.
9.
The Fender Classic 70's Jazz Bass was about £479 I think.
Wotcha! Are you gonna introduce yourself?
10. I went there last Saturday and they sorted out my return to Peavey very nicely considering they had nothing to do with the original sale. It's easy to get to down the A61, turn onto the M58 [inner ringroad], turnoff at the sign for the airport. At the roundabout take 3rd exit [signposted airport], then it's about 2nd or 3rd left past TGI Fridays and just next to Staples.
11. The most I've paid for a bass is £220. I've never had much cash to spare to be honest! People at gigs like the sound of my bass so I'm not concerned about not having expensive gear.
12.
Never ceases to amaze me the amount of negative tripe that people post when ever there is a bass player doing something that a lot of us wouldn't mind being involved with.......A "Major Company" demo!!!!!
Well Jake did invite us to check out the video, and this is a discussion forum so what's wrong with people expressing their opinions and discussing the video? I didn't enjoy it at all, although I didn't find it funny. Of course he's getting paid; and I'm depping on New Year's Eve playing indie/rock music, some of which I don't like much, because I need the money.
13. It looks very much indeed like my Avon Rose-Morris.
14.
I hope that you get a better result than me!!
Peavey have agreed to fix it for nothing! I think it might be a few weeks before it's back to me which means using the Stagg for a bit... luckily the Stagg doesn't actually sound that bad with a few cheap upgrades.
15. Almost any electric bass guitar with a mid or bridge pickup can be growly. I like! You don't necessarily need overdrive or new strings or owt like that. Don't go for scooped tone on the EQ.
16. BAD Get bored during long easy songs Can't sight read very well [bass clef is weak] Don't have 'classic' fretting hand position Backing vox out of tune if no good monitoring Don't slap GOOD Don't slap Fine playing with pick/fingers/thumb palm-muting etc Always confident and happy onstage (play okay no matter what's happening) Fretless technique fairly good Always put the band sound ahead of my personal preferences for volume/EQ etc. Can groove like a mother
17. You won't find ANY disagreement from this corner! I've seen Bauhaus and Sisters Of Mercy recently, David Jay was great live, unfortunately Sisters Of Mercy had programmed basslines for most songs - I'd have jumped up and played 'em for just a couple of pints in payment.
18.
Thanks for the update. The bass was only 195 new, and it probably isn't worth the cost considering the bass is my main gigging bass and has a fair bit of wear on it. I'm making do with rechargeable batteries at the moment. This was my first active bass so it took me a while to realise it wasn't just normal (regular gigging) use causing the batteries to drain so fast.
As a minor follow up to this, I've got bored of recharging the batteries every week, and so enquired about the kit to fix the problem. It's £80:45p ! I've asked if Peavey are willing to offer me a discount on this [considering it's their fault] and I'll let you know what they say.
19. I used to gig regularly with loud bands using 100watts [SS or valve], always had plenty of speaker area though, which I think was the key [4x12 or 4x10&1x15]. Smallest combo I used was at a "backline-provided" gig when I used a tiny Hiwatt combo DI-d to the PA. Couldn't hear it on stage but FOH sounded fine when I stepped onto the dancefloor.
20. Sounds like a lot of pop music! Often excellent basslines, catchy hooks with complete sh1te lyrics. I sometimes play along to stuff like Moloko/Goldfrapp to try different kinds of basslines but I don't listen too hard to the lyrics...
21. Yeah I watched last night, good stuff. I noticed she had a Trace stack behind her - monitoring the sampled bassline p'raps?
22.
I'd kick him out if he was rubbish and didn't even notice.
+1 for the same reason.
23.
Fair comment - after all we all have to pay for rehearsal space and lessons, non?
Not exactly. Not everyone's had lessons and many people rehearse where they can for free. Accepted this isn't the 'proper' way of doing things but it worked okay for me; I was gigging for about 2 years before I paid for a rehearsal room.
24.
YOU'VE BEEN LEAVING FLYERS IN T-SHIRT HEAVEN IN CAS!!! Come and see me for a chat,Im the guy in the shoe-repairers at the centers far end!
Not us fella, unless some kind soul dropped off a few of our flyers after our recent gig at the Lion. I'm not often in Cas during the day but if I ever am I'll pop in and say hello, maybe more likely to see you at a gig especially if we end up on the same bill at any all dayers next year. Jon
25. Angel Of Sin - rock/pop/punk/metal covers with girly singer. www.angelofsin.co.uk www.myspace.com/angelofsinrock. ...we sometimes play workings men's clubs and usually get told off for not being quiet enough during the bingo.
