I haven't had my B3n long but I agree that some of the amp & cab emulations are quite nice, much nicer than I ever expected. That said, I won't be using them live anytime soon,

String spacing, neck depth/width/shape etc etc.
Horizontalste replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Adaptability & choice overlap in this debate I think, I'm sure we can adapt to most things, different environment, vocation, relationships & so on, its part of the human condition & if forced upon us we will in time adapt. However, we do have a choice in whether or not we are prepared to make the effort to adapt, because let's face it, most people are creatures of habit & will resist change. It's how our brains work. I've said recently on here that I prefer 19mm spacing, its something I've grown comfortable with over the years, that doesn't mean I don't ever play my basses with narrower spacing. I will flat refuse to adapt to metal though, I'd rather eat my own fingers & pour cement down my ear holes before I play that poo 😜 no offense metal heads! -
Look up Bass Aerobics, it prescribes one exercise a week for a year & there's absolutely no need to wear Lycra unless you really want to!

Really fun bass lines you're lovin' playing live!

Love Foolosophy is nice to play live, I'm still having to pay attention to the timing but it sounds good. -
PUPS and upgrades - Yamaha BB425X. Which/how?
Horizontalste replied to Misowaki's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ain't it! I bought it new for £220 I think & it'd been a while since I did anything like this so thought why not. It doesn't get out often because I prefer wide string spacing but when it does it always gets positive comments. -
PUPS and upgrades - Yamaha BB425X. Which/how?
Horizontalste replied to Misowaki's topic in Repairs and Technical
Mines had a nip & a tuck, hydro-dip graphics, lacquered neck & dyed fretboard, hipshot bridge & string retainer & wired VVT. -
PUPS and upgrades - Yamaha BB425X. Which/how?
Horizontalste replied to Misowaki's topic in Repairs and Technical
Bridge, pickups, string tree are the main differences then some of the earlier 1024/5's had lacquer on the necks. They're great basses & I think Yamaha have lost some of the essence with the new models. -
PUPS and upgrades - Yamaha BB425X. Which/how?
Horizontalste replied to Misowaki's topic in Repairs and Technical
I enquired about buying 1000/2000 pickups direct from Yamaha a few years ago & they were crazy expensive! I think it was somewhere near £400 to replace both, I have since owned a 1024, 614, 300 (early 90's) & now a 425 & can honestly say there's not much difference between them. Can I ask why you think they need an upgrade? On my 425 I have removed the selector switch in favour of VVT & is opened it up to lots of tonal possibilities. -
The Funk Theory according to Bean9seventy
Horizontalste replied to Bean9seventy's topic in Theory and Technique
Man this thread has pickled the think melon! Half the time I can't figure out exactly what the message you're trying to get across is! Your double slap thing hasn't changed the way the world see's or plays funk, in fact I'm sure the left hand could achieve similar results without lamping the thread off the truss rod, if it works for you great but I doubt very much that it will be a technique that we all rush to add to the musical toolbox. I will off course watch your ultimate funk hack video just to see if stinky poo gets real for me the very next day guaranteed, but experience tells me that there are no shortcuts & theory, regardless of who's theory it is is just that..... Theory! That's not meant to be scathing by the way, different strokes for different folks and all. P.s, if anyone could fill me in on the "gaming site" references if love to be educated! -
How to play my bands songs better?
Horizontalste replied to ButcherBass95's topic in Theory and Technique
If ask him to define better! Really pick him apart & put him on the spot by asking why he thinks what I'm doing with the line he written isn't cutting the mustard. It would be very difficult for anyone to make recommendations on what you should try playing without first hearing what's going on harmonically with the song. But be assured, there's absolutely no reason why you can't groove the shiz out of four notes! -
Another option would be to wire it VVT, I did it to my 425 & it opens it up to more tonal variations!

I'm happy to buy & sell here & have done many times, meetups to buy the odd Stingray here or there & swift trips down the M5 to find a Berg cab a new home. Think I even shipped abroad once. I did get stung by the doctor who shall remain nameless though, we all know how that went down! All in all it's a great place & it's nice to watch a forum grow, I think I joined BW in 2004 :-0

Hydrodipped then clear lacquer, neck has a satin tinted lacquer too & a dyed fretboard. Got rid of the pickup selector in favour of VVT & stuck a hipshot bridge on. Looks, plays & sounds great but it's not light!
-
I don't play mine much these days as I prefer a wider spacing but I too can vouch for the humble BB, great platform for pimping too if that's the kinda thing that blows your head back!

Walsall/Wolverhampton West Midlands. Hands off until we decide 🤣

All good input guys thank you. Part of me wants to give "contestant number three" a chance because I think he has some potential even though he's the least experienced I think he might sit in well if he can come out of his shell. Number one is a safe bet once he gets into playing again & has no other commitments. But then there's just something about number twos style that I like. We'll be discussing at length tomorrow!
-
Thanks for all the input chaps, I think we're going to get them all back for a longer session!

I think that's probably how it went Lozz, my only concern is that he might lack dynamics. We did Englishman in NY as one of the tracks & he played hard on that too, but again, the recording sounds good! Absolutely, we like to think we're quite steady & would like the new member to compliment the dynamic & not detract from it! Drummer number two occasionally deps for a band but was firm in saying that he'd commit fully to our trio, he wore in ears with a vocal trickle & I'm thinking that may be partly why he hits so hard. I've never used them so wouldn't know if they massively quieten things down? Agreed, we've been open in saying that we'd like to continue with one or two gigs a month with rehearsals only when required! A friend of mine said we should go for the one that's works somewhere cool & can get us free sh!t 🤣

Yesterday we auditioned three drummers for our trio, it all went really well in terms of they all turned up & were really competent players. The first chap was an older guy (not a problem in the slightest) who's mostly been a blues player in some really successfull outfits, bags of experience & a really nice style but a little rusty as it's been a while since he played. I'm sure given a rehearsal or two he'd really come into his own. The second fellow (about our age, 40ish) was again very competent with an extensive CV in rock & glam rock bands. He was an incredibly hard hitter to the point that I had to dig in quite a bit & during the audition I thought maybe he'd be to loud for us but he recorded the whole thing & when he sent the files last night I was quite surprised at just how balanced we sounded. He also had the gear & ability to load loops into one of those thingies, an advantage in a trio for sure. The third chap was much younger & seemed very nervous to the point where he struggled to set up his gear, he wasn't as experienced as the other guys but his playing was on point & he did take the audition at the last minute. I know it shouldn't be relevant but I'm not convinced his personality is a perfect match. Gigs would be fine but we do like a laugh, I'd be hoping that this was just a nerves thing & with a couple of rehearsals he'd be out of his shell. I guess what I'm getting at is how would you decide? Obviously I'm not asking the BC massive to choose for us but what factors should we take into account to ensure that we move forward with no regrets! It's a conundrum for sure! (Maybe another round of longer auditions?)

Nah.......... However, I'm about to start building a new pedalboard that will be 'lightly' torched & sealed.

Anyone going to the Sharay Reed masterclass on the 29th?
Horizontalste replied to Owen's topic in General Discussion
Are they broadcasting this online by any chance? I'd love to go but don't fancy the commute to the capital! -
Thanks Phil, I had looked at his site (& bookmarked it) but just thought I'd better ask the masses first! I'll drop him an email to see if aluminium is an option!
-
I'm looking to refurb my cabs this year & wondered if the BC membership has any recommendations of where to get custom grills made? I'd be wanting rugged aluminium stuff! Cheers
-
Thanks for the comprehensive reply, I think I get it now! Cheers

Apologies if this seems like a daft question & I have used the search function to no avail but could someone explain the Balanced Input (xlr) on the front of my LMii? My main question is would there be any benefit running my signal from the Balanced Output of my incoming Zoom B3 into the Balanced Input of the LM? Cheers in advance!
