1. I watched "get on up" last night, the man had a tough start to life & I'm sure that made him into the person he was. I asked a car park attendant at the chili's show in Manchester (2004 I think) who the support acts were & he replied "james brown if the police let him out", apparently he'd gotten hands one with a lady friend.
 2. Genz Neox 2-12 would be the obvious choice for me, they pop up used from time to time. I use the shuttle with focus 2-10 cabs & it's all I need.
 3.
I've been thinking of buying a 424 but I do keep looking at the 1024. I need to get to a shop that has both. Is the 424 as good a bass as a squirt? In terms of build and usable tone? I mean squier... Blooming autocorrect!
I only have experience with the affinity series & in my opinion they are better. The BB's will do a nice woody precision sound or a burpy jazz one. I've never heard anyone knock the build quality of the Yamaha either & the ones I've had (614,300,425&1024) have all been excellent.
 4.
Here is my BB615. I just mounted the Pickguard wich I have bought for it and I like it better then without. What do you think? Further this BB will get a Bartolini Preamp wich I am awaiting and along with that I'd like to mount some new and better readable Knobs like the Lakland Basses have.
TRB style knobs?
 5. I have a 425 & a 1024 & they are different beasts. The 102's are just huge sounding & build quality is a cut above the 425 I have. I was originally after a 1025 second hand but they don't come up often so I went for a new 425 because it was cheap.
 6.
Hey Blue my goals have changed every so often as i make improvements. I think at the moment my goals are simply to continue improving. I don't need other bass players to think im a great player and so on but i do want others to think that i can play a bit, if that makes sense.
I think it might help if you explore your goals a bit deeper. There are lots of folks who will knock having a plan in place because, well, "it's just not rock & roll" but I was like you once & then I discovered an article on jazzearadvice.com (I'll try to find it) & it gave me an insight on how to improve. For years my practice would just be sitting down & playing bass with no real direction but now I won't often pick it up without knowing what I'm trying to achieve. Sometimes I noodle but not often. Now my practice is structured, I have goals set & a plan on how to achieve them & time frames to meet, yes it's a bit anal (lol) but it works for me. Try it for a month, set a realistic goal(s) & plan how to achieve it, then all you have to do is work towards that goal.
 7. Wish I was gigging this weekend :-(
 8. I'll echo what others have already said, I have just bought a shuttle head off Mike & everything was exactly as described. Mike even went above & beyond to get it delivered after a c0ck up on my part. Top fella, buy with absolute confidence.
 9.
I have been playing for 45 years and I can't do any of that stuff. My goal, I'm a band guy, a gigging guy. I love live performance and the audience. For me I subscribe to the ABGs ,"Always Be Gigging, Always Be Gigging" What was your goal with the bass, to be a top notch at home hobby guy,a luthier, recording artist, playing in a gigging band? Blue
Blue sums it up for me, I've learnt more from gigs & preparing for gigs in the rehearsal room than I ever did on my own. I have fourteen year's or so in the bank & still occasionally get that look from the others when I "hit a wrong'n" or miss the change completely in a forest gump style. Don't compare yourself to others just enjoy the journey to your own groove.
 10.
Thanks mate. I was a little worried. Reports on Talkbass seem to be mixed - some people convinced they are brighter and others who seem to notice no difference at all. Roger Sadowsky won't even install them on his basses and is fairly vocal about them....
On the other side of the coin Jon Shuker fits them to his basses, in fact he done mine & the only difference I noticed is I can achieve a much lower action with no buzz but I'm sure that's down to fretwork & not fret material. Edit* don't forget to post piccies in the musicman thread :-)
 11.
Yeah some excellent bass covers. I can see what to play but I can only manage it at about 2/3 of the speed! Good advice all round. Thanks folks.
Maybe use audacity or something similar to slow it down a bit to a speed you can play it at then slowly build it up. Play it after a warm up a couple of times then have a break, then play it again slightly faster, do that a couple of times a day & you'll be up to speed in no time. It's a similar process that athletes use for speed work, short repetitions of a speed that's just slightly faster than your ability. Don't look at it negatively, you've identified an area of your playing that you can improve on so work towards that goal & have fun.
 12.
Old thread, but I've just snagged a Stingray 5H PDN Neptune Blue with flamed maple fingerboard. I'm hoping that stainless steel frets don't turn it too clanky, but nonetheless looking forward to receiving it on Thursday. Pete
Sounds cool, I wouldn't worry about stainless frets, my Stingray has them & it's not clanky at all, even with a low action.
 13. I'm far from a prolific poster but I have been around for a long time both here & bassworld & it has changed over the years mostly due to membership numbers I feel. In the early days it was like living in a village where everyone spoke to each other & now it's like living in a city where there are lots of little communities. There are & always have been posters who grind my gears but that's the way forums are. Take from basschat what can, there's still loads of knowledge & experience here & the mood changes frequently. I did enjoy reading posts off the likes of drdave but I definitely won't miss Nigel & his trolling & wpd seemed a genuine guy although some of his posts were questionable. I certainly won't be questioning the mods decisions.
 14.
Where about are you based?
Kettering, if it's the same one that's on eBay
 15. I like 2mm G & 2.5mm E at the last fret following the boards radius. I know most people don't bother measuring but I'm a bit sad like that :-)
 16. Get a pencil, some feeler gauges & an elastic band. Place the pencil over the strings at the first fret & use the elastic wrapped around the pencil & the neck to hold the E string down @ the first fret. With the bass in the playing position hold down the E string where the body & neck join & use the feeler gauge to measure under the E @ frets 7/8&9. I aim for 0.017 because it always works & feels comfortable but you could go for less relief if your fretwork allows. It really is trial & error but definitely worth learning how to do it. There's nothing worse than spending £40 on a pro set up only to have the neck shift when you get home.
 17. It's really just a sign of the times I think, everything is getting cut and it seems there's not much we can do about it.
 18.
updated.
Love the Modulus:-)
 19. Under 700 quid will get you a nice Bb1024/5, incredible passive tones.
 20.
You don't happen to know your specs offhand, do you? I would be interested to know how you have it.
0.017 relief & 2mm @ the last fret, not uber low but no buzz & I can really dig in. Edit* That's a Ebmm Ray with good fretwork
 21.
Thanks for the Audio Technica tip - just bought a pair on Amazon for £95!
I hope you enjoy them, I really can't fault mine.
 22.
Yamaha BB425 G.
What G said! £250 New from GAK at the minute.
