Thanks for the info Dad, I have a couple of vsti's I can use but I fancy having a go at samples. It would appear I have the bug.

After giving up on cubase I've installed Reaper and I should have done it ages ago but my old antiquated laptop is having a hard time keeping up. I plan on replacing it for a better specced machine but I'm not likely to do that before my free trial runs out. So, question one is, if I buy my license now will I then have to buy it again for the new laptop or is reaper user transferable Also why I have the attention of the recording experienced, can someone point me in the direction of a trusted site for samples, it's mostly drums I'm after. I think you've made a wise choice, Mr Shuker has mine currently for a high gloss vintage tint. As much as the unfinished necks feel nice they just look, well, unfinished & not to mention a pig to keep clean. Post up a picture when you get it back, I'd be interested in seeing. Mines due anytime now, its been painted & refretted but the nut needed replacing so we're waiting for that.

I'd like to play but unfortunately I'm still in the "sitting there scratching my head" looking at Reaper phase. Maybe next month, or the month after, or the month after that. & so on & so on. :-)

I'll go out on a limb & say that you can teach yourself what you'd like to do. To play along to songs you need to know how intervals (search intervals in 28 days on jazzearadvice) sound & have a good working knowledge of the circle of fifths. You can pick out the key of a song by listening, hum one note that works all through the song & you won't be far off then use the circle to decipher the chords. If you try to figure songs out without putting in a little ground work first you'll get frustrated. It's so much easier once you've trained your ear to recognise intervals. I'm sat here now watching Spiderman & hearing the intervals in the score, sad I know. Steve

Welcome Mike My advice to your questions would be learn your intervals inside out, know how they sound so you can pick them out in the bassline you want to learn. Also, learn about the circle of fifths and how to apply it and practice picking out the key center of songs you are learning. It sounds daunting at first but the more you do it the easier it becomes and you'll have a lightbulb moment at some point I guarantee. I've recently started applying the spaced practice method to my practice & I'm seeing huge gains even after over a decade of playing. Stick with it man. Steve

I Dj'd in clubs in the 90's, wouldn't know one end of a booth from the other now though with all this technology. Would you believe the young'ns don't even carry vinyl these day's, they don't know what they're missing carrying 160 records up three flights of stairs and across a dance floor full of sweaty armpits.

Another one for the mixer. Alesis multimix 4, allows you to plug your bass straight in (no DI needed) and your phone or other source then you can either use headphones or monitors.

I'm going to a jam in the new year and one of the guitarist's emailed saying "just get your licks down and we'll play twelve bar". What's wrong with that I hear you all say, well nothing but this got me thinking about licks in general. See, I never intentionally learnt any, in fact the only licks I know are patterns that have turned up time and time again in the songs I've learned over the year's. So this got me wondering what the consensus among the BC fraternity is? Did you just pick up things along the way or did you intentionally learn "the licks" and if so do you feel it helped in the jam situation and with your creativity in general? Just curious is all. I'm particularly enjoying The Jon Amor Blues Group. I haven't worked on walking lines for years so I'll make time for that too. I'm realising now that everyone does the Standards in a different way so I'll absorb as much as I can from the different player's. There's so much great music around that we should all consume in large quantities regardless of genre. I'm particularly looking forward to playing with guys & gals with a different outlook, rock's great but done to death round here.
