Thanks for the info Dad, I have a couple of vsti's I can use but I fancy having a go at samples. It would appear I have the bug.

After giving up on cubase I've installed Reaper and I should have done it ages ago but my old antiquated laptop is having a hard time keeping up. I plan on replacing it for a better specced machine but I'm not likely to do that before my free trial runs out. So, question one is, if I buy my license now will I then have to buy it again for the new laptop or is reaper user transferable Also why I have the attention of the recording experienced, can someone point me in the direction of a trusted site for samples, it's mostly drums I'm after. Thanks folks Steve
will do, shouldn't be too long. David tends to post pictures on his facebook page, and he has some of other Stingrays/Sadowsky basses he's done in the past: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002025970885 Post yours when you get it back!
Will do mate.

I think you've made a wise choice, Mr Shuker has mine currently for a high gloss vintage tint. As much as the unfinished necks feel nice they just look, well, unfinished & not to mention a pig to keep clean. Post up a picture when you get it back, I'd be interested in seeing. Mines due anytime now, its been painted & refretted but the nut needed replacing so we're waiting for that.

January Composition Challenge - GET RECORDING!
Horizontalste replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
Nah, we've all done that, and it doesn't work. One needs to be a bit more pro-active. For starters, put the picture as background on your screen, so that it's before you every day. Then change your avatar for the picture (fun, as it changes every month. It's Secret Santa month for now, or I'd have already done it...). Sooner or later something will pop into your head; a melody, a riff, a beat... Then is the time to reap the rewards of this cunning psychological forward planning, using... Reaper..! There, you see..? That was easy, wasn't it..? No more excuses now; get that screen desktop picture done. Yes, now. Well..? Don't just sit there gawping..!
Thanks Dad, your so inspirational. I just don't think a song about a woman with her hand up a rabbit's arse is something I've conceived before :-p -
January Composition Challenge - GET RECORDING!
Horizontalste replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
I'd like to play but unfortunately I'm still in the "sitting there scratching my head" looking at Reaper phase. Maybe next month, or the month after, or the month after that. & so on & so on. :-) -

Lessons... I need to know what to learn!
Horizontalste replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I'll go out on a limb & say that you can teach yourself what you'd like to do. To play along to songs you need to know how intervals (search intervals in 28 days on jazzearadvice) sound & have a good working knowledge of the circle of fifths. You can pick out the key of a song by listening, hum one note that works all through the song & you won't be far off then use the circle to decipher the chords. If you try to figure songs out without putting in a little ground work first you'll get frustrated. It's so much easier once you've trained your ear to recognise intervals. I'm sat here now watching Spiderman & hearing the intervals in the score, sad I know. Steve -
New member and new to playing bass, looking for advice please
Horizontalste replied to Bertie Bassit's topic in Introductions
Welcome Mike My advice to your questions would be learn your intervals inside out, know how they sound so you can pick them out in the bassline you want to learn. Also, learn about the circle of fifths and how to apply it and practice picking out the key center of songs you are learning. It sounds daunting at first but the more you do it the easier it becomes and you'll have a lightbulb moment at some point I guarantee. I've recently started applying the spaced practice method to my practice & I'm seeing huge gains even after over a decade of playing. Stick with it man. Steve -
There must be a market for a real vinyl disco ?
Do they do lightweight vinyl now? :-p These things weigh a tonne.

I Dj'd in clubs in the 90's, wouldn't know one end of a booth from the other now though with all this technology. Would you believe the young'ns don't even carry vinyl these day's, they don't know what they're missing carrying 160 records up three flights of stairs and across a dance floor full of sweaty armpits.
The Dynamite P is mine now. I'll start an NBD thread after I have taken some pictures, it plays and sounds fantastic. P meets Thunderbird, think Live At Leeds.
Cool, it'll be a definite conversation starter at your gigs

Nice bass, enjoy.....

If an amp lacks phones socket, what options do you have?
Horizontalste replied to Samfordia's topic in Amps and Cabs
Another one for the mixer. Alesis multimix 4, allows you to plug your bass straight in (no DI needed) and your phone or other source then you can either use headphones or monitors. -
I'm going to a jam in the new year and one of the guitarist's emailed saying "just get your licks down and we'll play twelve bar". What's wrong with that I hear you all say, well nothing but this got me thinking about licks in general. See, I never intentionally learnt any, in fact the only licks I know are patterns that have turned up time and time again in the songs I've learned over the year's. So this got me wondering what the consensus among the BC fraternity is? Did you just pick up things along the way or did you intentionally learn "the licks" and if so do you feel it helped in the jam situation and with your creativity in general? Just curious is all.
Do you reckon he'd do a orange bass?
Ask him, Capri Orange was a fender colour I believe.

It's only right that MM owners defend their bass's. After all it is the product that rectified Leo's mistakes when he made the Precision :-) (runs for cover)
As someone who has always played rock but in the last few years has started playing a fair bit of blues, I would suggest that you listen to a few of the new guys on the circuit rather than just exclusively to the old classics. You might pick up on how things have subtlety changed in terms of tone and approach, etc. You could start by searching for guys like Travis Carlton playing with Kirk Fletcher on YouTube (picked purely as I was listening to him today) or many others who picking up the blues gigs today. You will find that the arrangements in blues are a lot more fluid than rock and that you will rarely play a song the same way twice. Also, you will need to learn how to play a walking bass line and keep it going for as long as necessary (I used to practice by playing a simple song like ‘Boom Boom’ for 15 minutes or so at a time and changing the line every second chorus). I would suggest that that you memorise a library of riffs and also work out as many different ways that you can think of playing the changes from the I to the IV, the IV back to the I and then up to the V, etc so that you are not just relying on simple chromatic runs all of the time. There are some decent blues gigs out there and I have had loads of fun and played all over country on the blues circuit (from the south coast up to the Orkneys)! However, be aware that in many places a decent rock band will tend to draw more people to the average pub gig than an equally good blues band. The better gigs are in blues clubs, pubs that have a specialist blues night or the many festivals up and down the country…
Thanks Pete, my interest has definitely been spiked by some of newer guys. I'm particularly enjoying The Jon Amor Blues Group. I haven't worked on walking lines for years so I'll make time for that too. I'm realising now that everyone does the Standards in a different way so I'll absorb as much as I can from the different player's. It's reignited my interest to be honest, think my playing had become stagnant recently. cheers Steve

Thanks for those Kenny, I feel like a kid in a sweet shop with all this music to listen to.

Thanks for all the advice folks, my Spotify 'blues' playlist is already over a hundred songs. I'm gonna be a busy boy.

Thanks for all the input, I'm listening to Muddy Waters as I type this waiting for the kids to emerge from school. I've got loads to go on & my foot is tapping to the infectious beat, can't wait to get out to see what the local guys are doing. Exciting times ahead I think. Seashell, I may just take you up on that visit to town. Cheers Steve
Nice to see a considered and thought-out change of direction. There's very many good Blues tracks you could work on and as always, if performed well, will always be enjoyed. I enjoy a quite wide range of music, but perhaps this will give you something to think about: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_bluesong.html There's also a listing of Blues albums you may want to browse through too. Good luck - hope you make it a success.
Thanks Allie, it's as much a change of pace as a change of direction. There's so much great music around that we should all consume in large quantities regardless of genre. I'm particularly looking forward to playing with guys & gals with a different outlook, rock's great but done to death round here.
