1.
Gigged it properly this morning. Orchestra type gig with a variety of ensembles. Sounded superb. Very happy indeed.
Wicked, I like that you rocked a bass with so much mojo with an orchestra :-) Please tell us you were power lunging!
2. I did wonder if he'd taken a turn for the worse again. Take it easy Doc
3. I had a bass that I loved but rarely used, I sold it. Still regret it now.
4.
Yes the Ray34 and Ray35 are very good indeed. So good that they are reasonably hard to pick up second hand. The question then is, do you buy a new Sterling by Music man Ray or a second hand real USA EBMM Stingray for the same price?
That's an easy decision to make, the used Stingray if not only for the re-sale value.
5. If your after a regular gigging weapon I'd say Stingray but if it's just for home noodling and stuff maybe save your dollar & get the sterling. There's always the USA subs if you don't mind second hand, they're just Stingray's in their work clothes.
6.
Thank you for your reply. This was an option I considered but decided against it - I already have a silent set up but I prefer to use speakers where I can.
Cool, there's a TC BG500 in the fs forum might be worth a look, not the smallest combo but certainly gig ready.
7. Can I maybe add another option to the quandary?!? I haven't used an amp for home practice for year's, I use a mixer with headphones and I can add whatever music source I like (usually tablet or phone). It's a cheap set up that packs away nicely, I don't disturb anyone and I can take it to work when I'm on nights. Then you could have time to decide on a gig rig should you start playing in bands.
8. Welcome back :-) Now stop hanging around interweb forums & go find a band to play with.
9. The good thing about music is you can walk away, slag her off to your friends, belittle her in every way and she'll always take you back. Look at it as a break, you have plenty of time to discover other things and if you want to return to music so be it.
10. Some of Scott's stuff is available on YT, take a look and decide for yourself. He is a well respected tutor and a member here.
11.
What's a squeeler box?
It's those square fifty watt things that make those horrible squealing noises
12.
This might help. A whole thread on the subject. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230948-ios-for-the-gigging-bassist/page__st__150__p__2469682__hl__ios__fromsearch__1#entry2469682
Thanks I'll go get educated :-)
13. I figured that it was an effects type thing going on. I was trying to Google it but couldn't think what to type in the search bar. It never ceases to amaze me how technology is moving so quickly but I won't be ditching me meager pedal board just yet.
14. Increasingly I'm seeing musicians using IPad type contraptions at gigs, mainly perched on top of the bass rig or guitarists squeeler box. Now I'm not much of a technonerd and I'm not down with the kids but I'm baffled as to what these folks are doing! Is this some kind of effects thing or are they just doing Facebook type posing?
15. Pffftt, trolley's... I use a twelve year old boy but its OK because I own him. He's not strong enough for vintage gear but does OK with the Benz.
16. Every forum will undoubtedly have the odd nob or two, its just a case of figuring out who they are and avoiding them, or winding them up if that's your sport. Now, where did I put that troll...
17. Car manufacturers do it all the time, same part, made in the same factory but with different part numbers because they are for different applications. I guess the price difference is reflection of the bass they are intended for. I guess we'll never know.
18.
Thank you I was tempted to build something extremely similar again but in 34" scale and a lot lighter, but that would be covering old ground.
Yeah, a pointless excersise if you've done it before. I've always wanted a nice ebony board on my Yamaha but thought it an expensive mod, looks like more and more people are having boards changed though so I might fish around for some quotes.
19. I think relief and string height when set properly can make even a relatively bad bass play nice. Its all about ergonomics and economics and being easy to play, too much relief and more effort is needed for fretting.
20.
Ok but what value do you use guys for neck relief ... assuming capo on 1st and 12ve fret ?
.012 feeler gauge under frets 7,8 &9 with the bass fretted at the first and body joint.
