1. Hi, This might be worth looking at if you can determine the origin of the bass. Not too far from you either.
2. Not used one, but interesting principle. Hard to say what it will sound like or how feedback resistant it would be without trying. I did a search on TB and nothing came up so a bit of an unknown. Are you looking for a specific kind of pickup?
3. Do you think that one of the Innovation family might give you that tone? I just looked up the Velvet price....geeez they've gone up.
4. Peter Hall in Beverley, East Ridings Peter does really nice work, is a great guy, and is very affordable. http://www.peterhallviolins.com/instruments/contact.html
5.
I have a cheap Antonini plywood bass which sounds a hell of a lot better, and is easier to play, after Peter worked on it. It's actually saved me money because instead of spending a grand or so on a better bass this one will be fine until I'm ready to step up to a serious money bass. Steve
I picked up my bass yesterday from Peter Hall. He skimmed the fingerboard, knocked the sound post around, and cut the bridge down to allow a fuller range of action, and then dropped the action for me. It's like a revelation The bass now sounds clearer with very little volume loss. The tone is even across the strings up and down the neck and for once I can play thumb position with ease across the strings. He did a great job for an extremely reasonable price. I couldn't stop playing it last night. On top of it all he is a very nice fellow. If you need any work done and are in the Yorkshire area give Peter a shout. 6. Let us know when you try some of them out and what you think of them. Do you think one of these would help a cheap bass sound a little better?
7.
Thanks for the advice, the bass is now flat on its back - the sound post doesn't appear to have moved. Guess I need to start looking for a luthier!
You could try Kai, he's in Notts. www.kaidaseviolins.com
8. My EAD Foundation 212 is full range...3-way with 2 12's, one 6 for mids and a tweeter for zing. The mid and tweeter can be attenuated on and off and anywhere in between. TKS look to have several pretty full range products. Also, Mike and Richard might still be supplying the fEarful 3 way cabs pre-build, you just get the speakers and load it yourself. 9. Good grief, that must of been a rough crowd Hope you get it sorted soon. As others have mentioned, it looks like a some what common thing to repair.
10. Warmoth sell short and medium scale bodies as well as necks. There are several body shapes to choose from and you can have the pickups routed in different configs as well. Like 2X18, I have a Yammy Motion bass which is 32" (trans black). It plays great and sounds great too. You get the shorter reach but with out losing the note definition which happens on some short scale basses.
11.
Now who is this semi-hollow beauty made by? I do like the look of that.
Status
12. The prices are a bit steep too for what they are. I was looking for a PJ recently and found Jap imports for something like 1/3-1/2 the price of these. I'm having a custom ACG PJ made for less than this as well.
13. No, but I bring a backup bass guitar. I used to carry a UBass as a backup.
14. Looks lovely. Congrats
15. My only bass is a beater bass I'd rather knock around a £700 bass than a £2-5000 bass. That being said, I also use a BSX 5 string EUB and swapping between isn't too difficult. One gets to know one's instruments after playing them so much and I think that helps making the swaps easier.
16. I've booked my db in with Peter Hall this coming weekend to have my setup changed rather substantially. It currently has high action with low/med-low tension strings (Velvet Animas). I'm going to try dropping it right down from the ~15-17cm to very close and am losing the Animas to try Spiros for the first time. I found a used set of mitts in a bass bag I bought second hand (they are in very good shape), and I bought Clarky's used weichs so there is a little bit of choice. I love the Velvet's tone and have a feeling the Spiros will be a bit of a shock with such a different tone. Not sure whether to start with the mitts or the weichs. My playing style is a bit heavy handed so that will need addressing. I figure if I can't get my tone from Spiros, a set of Honeys will go on as those sounded lovely on this bass. It's a little bit of a turd polishing exercise as the bass aint that great, a presumably European hybrid with a carved top and everything else laminated. But, it's my one and only so hopefully Peter will be able to work some magic to get the tone even and loud whilst making the action easier.
17.
Nothing wrong at all with that, I have done for years but for the occasions when you are travelling with a band or flying, or simply to protect you main bass, the Chadwick is priceless IMO.
Plus, you just leave it assembled until you need to "fold" it so it really is just another double bass. I just has that great advantage during travelling.
18. Great stuff.
19. Hi Adi, where are you located? Also, maybe you could turn the caps key off.
20.
I tried lots of different strings but I alway come back to Thomastik Spirocore. They are loud, durable and sound good for pizz and bowing.
What's your preference for Spiros, mitts or weichs? I ask as I'm changing my setup for lower action, but my playing is a bit heavy handed. Just wondering if one is less clacky then the other.
21. Come see our acoustic punk/funk/rock/country trio (ac guitar, cajon and double bass) of original music this Thursday at the Hop in Wakefield. We're in the downstairs bar. Starts around 9pm
22. I run Velvet Animas too. I had Honeys and Evah weichs. I'm going for a change in setup soon with a drastic lowering in action and might try Spiro weichs or mitts. To tell the truth, I'm a little scared about the change as the tone I get now is the best so far but I can't deal with the high action after my arm/elbow issue this past year, so the action needs to drop. Steve (oggiesnr), is it Peter Hall that you use out in Beverley? I'm thinking trying him. Does he do good work?
23. Where are you located? None of your ads mention location, nor does your profile Lovely bass. Is the spacing 18mm on this?
