SOLD Villex Jazz Bass Pickups SOLD
I guess so, but the Modulus VJ only came with Barts as standard which were way too scooped to be heard on stage. Villex were offered as a custom option and they apparently didn't have this issue. So its a good way to upgrade a VJ and enhance its desirability.
These pickups will help any bass really. You have the benefits of an active system (good output with tone clarity and flexibility) in a passive setup. These pups will improve the sound of your basic jazz bass clone exponentially, as well as reportedly expensive instruments as stated above. Anyone with a dull sounding bass would not do wrong installing these. Or, get an inexpensive bass and pimp it. I'd keep these but all my basses are sorted and I'm saving for a UDB. Price negotiable. -

Now sold thanks For Sale. These sounded great in a Jap jazz I had but I sold that bass and never found anything interesting enough to put them in. I believe they are the V2JLH model found here. NOTE: The neck pup is smaller in size than the bridge pup as per regular Fender cavity sizes. Comes complete with control plate already wired with stacked volumes, mid-range sweep thingy and passive tone control, screws and knobs. £125 posted o.n.o
on the positive side, once you're set up they are pretty low maintenance, I have only ever bought 3 sets of strings in my entire playing life. Thats one set of thomastiks, one set of gut strings (off ebay quite cheap) and the ones I'm using now Innovation silver slap. my last pick up was £80 second hand.
plus, once your up and running all the extra DB gigs will pay for it all Glad it's going well for you this time bud.
... I'm just trying to think where/when I could do that.
Try Jan at Chappel Allerton Strings. He works on my bass and is a cool guy. He's in North Leeds which maybe easier to get to from your neck of the woods.
Actually I've just had another look at the bridge and it looks like it was cut into that shape - one side is a flat plane, the other side is rounded. It isn't bent or warped.
This is how Jan carved my new bridge. I think it's probably ok, but get it checked out to be sure.
Yep understood. TPJ I think you must be right about the strings too, he did mention that the strings were "hybrids" when he dropped it off yesterday. Right just need to speak to him about the heel joint then I guess. Thanks again everybody.
Is there a luthier in your area to take it for inspection? That'd give you a valuation as well. Maybe make it a condition of the sale. You'll buy it at that price if he allows you to take it to get it inspected.
If you want more than a jazz with stingray orginal sound go for the HH model m8...
or a Sandberg j/mm I've played a jazz for the first 15 years of my bass playing life. I now play a MM 3eq 4. Like Dave's vid shows, you can do just about anything with them. I put mine though a Sadowsy pre/DI and it really adds another level of versatility. Just for info, I found out that the pup in a MM is wired differently than the pup in a Sterling/Sub. One is wired parallel and one is wired series. I can't recall which but there you go. Edit: Just found a post in another thread where it states 'Ray 4 pup is wired parallel.

That bridge is ok. Mine's carved (and curved) like that. The luthier I use said as long as the bottom of the bridge is flat and perpendicular to the body you'll be fine. It takes some getting used to looking at them though Also, strings look like Innovation Honeys. Nylon core with metal windings, they offer a darker gut like tone and very different to Spiros.
Err, I think I lost the plot here. I can't imagine superglue being effective for impedance matching, but then I can't see how it's applicable to finger noise either ?
I think the superglue pertains to gluing the piezos to the bridge instead of/ as well as using the clips.

Bought Oli's EMG pup. Nice easy transaction and great comms through out. Thanks again bud.

Ergo basses have a good rap as well. Also, check out the EDB mega threads on TB

Nice! Welcome to the wonderful world of DB. There's no going back now +1 on the lessons to get your technique sorted out to avoid injury. Enjoy

+1 for the Acoustic Image gear. I use a Focus 1 with 1 Aguilar GS112 and you get good volume and tone. The Contras are great too.
Good idea, I know a few players who use mixed sets and the Evahs seem to blend well with the guts. Ive got a new set of Evahs that ill try out soon on a pop tour, will let you know how they blend etc if you like.
Yes please. That would be great. Where's your tour running? PM if you want.
Thanks, Its a full set of Chorda's. Theyre pricey, but Pirastro were kind enough to give them to me. Ill definately stay on these for jazz stuff. Theyre a real pain in the ass for tuning etc, but im getting used to the sound. Its a different set of rules on guts, but i really love the Jimmy Blanton, Pettiford old school sound... As far as i can tell, the Velvet Garbos are pretty close to being 'gut' like without the tuning hassles and a lot less money. Think they're round £220 a set, might be worth a try at some stage? Those Innovations are good for Rockabilly arent they?
I'm going to try some Evah Pirazzi soon with a view to swapping the D and G for gut when I get some more cash. Innovation make a Rockabilly string but the Honeys are more for orch and jazz playing. They sound lovely and dark on my bass and are flexible enough for a nice high action. They also sound nice for the Bluegrass stuff and the covers we play acoustically. I prefer a darker, richer tone not a zing twangy one and these strings do that well.
-
I'm envious. Guts are my next step but unfortunately the cost is holding me back My DB is strung with Innovation Honeys which supposedly emulates gut but there's nothing like the real thing. Are you using a full set of Chorda's or separate E and A with Chorda D and G? The tone is great on that recording.
...an opinion I usually challenge around 2am as I struggle up the stairs with my upright!
+1

They're like $3 plus shipping here. There's a bit about them on TB if you search. Supposedly quieter acoustically but sound like a DB with a pup when amped, which lets face it is most of the time for many of us. I can't help but think having a finger board that detaches will really affect the tone as they are usually glued on tight. But who knows until you try one. Buy one and let us know

TenLetters purchased some Eminence speakers from me. Great comms and a top chap to deal with. Thanks again for nice easy transaction.
Has anyone had an experience like this before? Is it an easy sort of damage to fix, and will my bass ever feel like she used to?
Similar but not ant where near as bad. We were playing a gig at the Point in Cardiff. I left my DB on it's side out of the way in the main standing area. Went to play and whilst on stage I noticed two 5 pence bit missing from the back and a long scratch. Someone (stage crew) either knocked it over or hit it with something very heavy. No one owned up to it though, b@sta@rds

It can get confusing. I didn't realise the different construction methods until I started looking into making a removable neck DB. The project has been stalled as I couldn't decide how to progress with the neck attachment. Either of these ways mentioned below are used with the several luthiers making/converting DB to removable neck versions. I was looking at getting one of these and having a local chap detach the neck so I could have a travel bass similar to this.. $1700 + $500 to convert is quite a bit less than the $4500 Merchant want for basically a thin ply bass that can't really be played acoustically. If your neck is workable it may just save the project and save me a few £k This is a dovetail joint i believe. (note the extra slot in the block. The neck would have a piece that would slide into a channel like this) This is a mortise style joint (note it's just the neck sliding flat into the top block) Upton Bass builders use this method as well. A few pics would be great.
