Four String Five String? Now NBD. Why is nobody surprised?
Skinnyman replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
I suppose it could be but the problem I have with this (and with drop D) is that it alters the relationship between the notes across the strings and my little brain can’t cope with change like that at my advanced age. It expects that, whatever note I play, the fifth, fourth, sixth - all the other notes of the scale - are in specific places in relation to to it. Downtune a string and those relationships go out of the window and I am left floundering. So, for me with, my limitations, tuning to drop anything is just not an option. -

I think I’ve read just about every post you’ve made about them while I’ve been looking at the options and whittling down a short list so Thank You! 😁 One thing I’m still curious about - are the necks the same size/profile on the BB and TRBX? Specs seem similar but I’m getting the impression that the TRBXs are a little lighter than the BBs? -

Swift update. BEAD stringing is brilliant! I had to tweak the action a little but I’m really pleased. However.... This thread has reignited my GAS for a five string and - taking all the input on board - I think I’m going to try a nice, light, (and cheap) 34” scale fiver. At the moment it’s a toss up between an entry-levelish Ibby of some sort or (slightly wider spacing) a Yamaha TRBX305. (Looks wise, I absolutely love the Yam TRBX605 in red burst but I must be strong and stick to the budget). So... basses are going to be sold to make room in the rack and as soon as they’ve gone I’m off to Gear4Music in York to have a noodle on theirs before I hand over any cash. I know, it’s an unusual approach but I should try it at least once, right? In the meantime, I can carry on having fun with BEAD tuning. Thanks everyone for their inputs! -

The Donner page turner from Amazon. Dead simple to use - the only thing that confuses me is that the iPad sees it as a keyboard so you can’t type anything while the page turner is connected, I always forget this and spend five minutes trying to work out when the iPad won’t allow me to type anything. I think all turners are the same in this respect and, frankly, it’s more a reflection on my slow-wittedness.... We’ve got our first rehearsal in ages tonight. There’s no real prospect of gigging for a while but I can’t wait to just get together and play.

Thanks Ossy. It’s just that not everyone would understand. Or care. -
Sold Up for sale is my little Gretsch short-scale bass. It’s a lovely bass with a really nice, fat tone. I’ve currently got it strung with Chromes but I think I have the original rounds somewhere if preferred. I got it at the start of last year because I needed something small and light as I was going to rehearsals in a Mazda MX5. The car’s now gone and so I just don’t use the bass any more. It’s too nice to be unused like this and so... There isn’t a blemish on it anywhere. It’s pictured with Fender straplocks but they’ll be coming off and the original strap buttons replaced. I’d prefer to meet up if possible- I’m in sunny Cleethorpes but travel down the A1 regularly so PM me to discuss meet/delivery options. Trades - the only thing I might be interested in is a lightweight, slim-necked 5 string but I’m open to suggestions so PM and let’s see Thanks for looking, here’s the pics....

George, darling, I thought we’d agreed that the George and Mildred soubriquets were only to be used on those ‘special’ evenings that, sadly, have been stolen from since this cursed corona wotsit forced us all into lockdown? But you make a good point - our guitar chap has both a Helix and, er, the other one - can’t remember it’s name, not a kemper anyway - and he really likes them. So now I have a quandary. Option one. Play songs in such a way that a fiver is not needed. Option two. Retune one of the less-used basses in the stable to BEAD and hope there’s no need to climb up to the G string (oo-er, missus). Option three. By an inexpensive fiver with narrower string spacing to see if that works. Option four. Get a fancy floor unit such as Osiris describes and pitch shift the problem away. Option five. All of the above in stages over the next few months. Given my propensity for GAS (which has kept many BC members furnished with high-quality, barely-used basses and amps at knock-down prices for several years now), I think we can all see where this is going to end up, can’t we boys and girls? -

It’s not clear from the OP whether the buyer was a BC member or not - I assumed it was a sale outside of BC. I’m with you in that my trust levels are much higher when dealing with established members of the BC community. -

That’s exactly what I plan to do, Reg. I tried to do it yesterday but Mrs S had plans. But I must admit that this discussion has given me GAS again. Before I act on it though, I have to sell something to make some room - I’m trying to follow a strict one in, one out policy. And while I’m waiting, I’m going to try the BEAD thing -
ON HOLD, PENDING Re-listing now that lockdown is over! I bought this new from Bass Direct last summer but since then we've moved away from a traditional backline and i now DI into the PA system. As a result, I'm downsizing my rig. The Bergantino 12's have gone and I'm not giving this brilliant amp the use it deserves and so it should go too. Condition is mint. I've used it at home a few times and it's been to a couple of rehearsals and one gig. I have the box and all the instructions, mains lead, etc so it will be repackaged as it came to me. I'm not really looking for trades but I'm open to ideas so let me know what you've got and I'll consider it. A lightweight, inexpensive 5 string with a slender neck (along the lines of an Ibby SR) might be tempting if I haven’t already sourced one.... I come down to London on a fairly regular basis so I can meet up anywhere along the A1 from Leeds down.... Or you're welcome to drop in to Skinny Towers besides the seaside and try it out for yourself. The kettles always on. I would prefer collection or one of those shady-looking meets in a pub car park somewhere but I can courier if required (UK mainland only) to established BC members. The Magellan has a great reputation but for those who aren't familiar with it, here's the specs and pictures. Built for the demands of professional touring, the MAGELLAN™ 800 circuitry is housed in a classy, yet rugged aircraft-grade, brushed aluminium chassis with a sleek custom extruded front panel. •The dual channel design features: •Clean Channel – Pristine and Articulate (switchable with standard 1/4” latching footswitch) •Drive Channel – Voiced for a More Driven Tonal Signature and Harmonic Texture •Dual-Curve Variable Contour Circuitry •Curve A -- Classic to Modern -- Mid Scoop Curve •Curve B -- Thicker to Vintage -- Low-Mid Bump w/Tapered Top End •Flat Position -- Full Bypass •Active 3 Band EQ w/Parametric Mid Control •Signal Mute Switch •Input Pad Switch •Thermal Sensing Variable Speed Fan Cooling •Brushed All Aluminium, Anodised Chassis •2.67 Ohm Min. Total Load •Output: 400W/8 Ohms, 800W/4 Ohms and 800W/2.67 Ohms •Dimensions: 11.25”W X 10.5”D X 3”H

Aargh! Choices, choices! My usual approach to this sort of quandary would be to get one of each but this time, I tell myself, I will be strong. Instead, I will see this as an opportunity to calmly and rationally consider a number of alternatives before I make a calm and rational purchasing decision*. I will weigh up all of the pros and cons of the various candidates and when a suitable buying opportunity presents itself either in the used marketplace or new, I shall be an informed buyer, able calmly and rationally to choose the best bass for my requirements. Thank you all for your suggestions.... * I’m fooling nobody but myself, am I? -

I’m loathe to spend a lot on another five string that I may well end up selling (again!) but the GIO GSR205 looks decent for not a lot of money. There’s something about the orange metallic that keeps calling me. I’m sure the premium range is a much better bass but it’s also a lot more money and I’m really not sure I can justify it. I’d rejected a lot of entry-level fives because of the weight and the neck width but the Ibbys all seem to have the 16.5mm spacing. The hunt is on.... -

I think it’s the overall width of the neck. I’ve had a couple of Dingwalls and a Yamaha and I can play them and I adjust to them quite quickly - it’s just that they feel clumsy, particularly from the eighth fret upwards. No matter how much I’ve persevered, I can never “gel” with them. -

One small, nit-picky point... People talk about bank to bank transfers and use the term “BACS” but, for consumer to consumer transfers such as we now do using online banking, the payments go through the Faster Payments System (FPS). It’s a small point but there is a significant difference. A BACS transfer can (theoretically) be cancelled before the money gets to you. An FPS transfer can’t. In most cases a Faster Payments transfer hits your account immediately and is non-repudiable. If the sender wants to cancel they have to get their bank to raise a request from your bank and is a load of protracted hassle that a scammer wouldn’t want to get into. Sometimes - and I had this recently - a payment can take up to two hours to be credited by the receiving bank. Up to that point, it could be rejected. In my case, we figured that a large amount of money from the buyer’s account to a new payee (me) had flagged up on the bank’s fraud/AML systems and the transaction had ended up on somebody’s queue to check on. As it was a BC member with good feedback I was, in this case, prepared to let him take the bass but be aware that a payment that has been sent can still be rejected (if the banks suspect fraud for example). Only once it’s received into your account is it safe. The latest version of FPS being rolled out insists on a verification of the account holders name before it makes the transfer which adds an extra level of verification. Sorry. Just realised I’ve been rambling. It’s an age thing. Has the drinks trolley been round yet? -

In this case the buyer was - allegedly - proposing to pay using PayPal’s credit terms so it’s not an issue. This is the approach that’s being taken by a BC colleague in another thread that’s been active recently - He bought a bass which has never turned up but because he (at the seller’s request) used F&F, PayPal have refused to cover him. The question is now whether the CC company will reimburse him. I have my doubts. In the case of PayPal, you use your CC to add to your PP balance. The CC company can claim that they have no interest or liability for what you bought with that balance. If PayPal refused to honour the balance for some reason, you could claim against the CC but they won’t cover anything you bought using PP as the payment method. I don’t know for sure but I’m guessing that this will be the argument put forward. I am waiting to see how the other case plays out.... -

I should have been more precise..., ...This is what I need. And I should have done a search for “BEAD” - apologies I think that would be my preference - that said, there are plenty of 34” fivers out there and many of them seem to have a perfectly usable B. All of the above suggests that it’s worth an experiment. I have a 5 set of strings so I’ll nick four of them and try it out on one of the basses I don’t use very often. Thanks all! -
Right, don’t laugh. This is probably a stupid question but humour me.... I need a five string. Problem is, I’ve tried them over the years and don’t really get on with them. I was thinking about this earlier and found myself saying “Oh, if only they made a five string with four strings, that would solve all my problems!”. What I mean, of course, is a four string bass but strung BEAD. I’m sure this must have been done before and the fact that it isn’t a “thing” makes me think that perhaps it just doesn’t work for some reason. So what are the issues and why aren’t more four string basses strung BEAD? Obvs, you lose the G string - but I can probably live with that for a lot of songs. And you’d need a new nut. But what else?
