I do it the way you describe. My amp has a valve preamp stage so I set the gain on that to get the amount of “grit” I want and then use the master volume to control how much noise I make. The only time I might do it differently is if I had a valve power amp and wanted to drive the output stage.

I'm afraid I commit both of the sins highlighted in this thread. And i do so knowingly and with a big, cheesy, look-at-me grin on my face. But then, what I do in the privacy of my own house, in front of my own mirror is nobody's business but mine. I'd never do it at a gig though.....

Shhhhh. All of the mods are wonderful, they do a difficult and dangerous job with little recognition and deserve what small comforts they can get. I would vote for them all to be King. Or Queen in at least one case.

Not if you're nicking next door's and their router isn't very powerful. Then you prob'ly have to sit on one of the bins to get a decent WiFi signal.
