    First gig with the PRO17s last night and they were...., well, not quite what I thought. First the good. This was a CIU club with a stage, low ceiling and strangely muffled acoustic. Guitarist's amp right behind me and turned up to usual. Drummer to my right hitting everything in sight with gay abandon. I don't think I could have done the gig without the earplugs. I took them out for one song and quickly shoved them back in. They were completely comfortable to the extent that I didn't really know I had them in. Other than the noise being turned down, that is. I could hear everything well. Even my bass which, without the plugs, was being drowned out by the guitar. But the odd bit (I won't call it "the bad") is that everything felt a bit......, meh. I'm not sure how to describe it. Just everything was a bit 'remote' and the songs sounded a bit flat and lifeless to the extent that I found myself overplaying to try and drive some life into them. I'm hoping that this is just a combination of me getting having to get used to the plugs and the strange on-stage sound we had at that venue (friends in the audience said the mix and volume were spot on so clearly it was just the onstage acoustics that were horrid). Everything else about these is perfect, I guess I now just need to get used to the way that the band sounds while I'm wearing them.

    Just got my PRO17s and first gig with them tonight. They were great at rehearsal this week - it's like someone fitted the drummer with a volume control

    Sorry, I'm not looking for trades, thanks. I've now got my perfect collection of basses and a few that are surplus to requirements and need to be moved on - of which this is the first and nicest. So, no trades I'm afraid but thanks for the offer.

    My two penn'orth I've bought a few things from Bass Direct over the years and I like the place. A lot of shops you go into, there seems to be an immediate assessment of whether you're going to buy or just "waste time". I've never felt like that in BD. they just let you get on with stuff. If you want to know something, you have to ask. If you're happy on your own, they won't hassle you. As to prices, well they're not GAK. But then again, they specialise in pretty esoteric instruments at the top end of the market. Given the massive investment they've got in the stock they hold, and given the comparatively small target market they're selling to, I don't mind if they hold firm on their prices and if they're a few quid more expensive on some things than the big internet discounters. And I agree that his pictures paint the guitars in their best light - but i don't think that's too unreasonable given that he is running a commercial enterprise and his job is to present his stock in the most attractive and appealing way that he can. So yes, you absolutely should go and see them in the flesh. They're aren't many places where I can go and sit for an hour playing some unusual and exotic bases without being hassled to make a sale. Sure, I'd like to have Mark's full attention when I want it, but he's a busy man, running a small shop in a very difficult trading environment so I'm prepared to cut him some slack. And at a time when every high street is becoming homogenised, when independent traders are disappearing as the chains and the high-volume internet discounters push them out of business, when exchange rates and business rates are on the up and margins are getting squeezed, I'm very glad that shops like Bass Direct are still trading. Just my opinion. Your mileage, as they say, may vary.

    Reduced to £1900 In early August last year I bought a trans white Dingwall ABZ 5/3 from Bass Direct. It's a fantastic bass and I love it to pieces. Or I did until I saw the CAR Super P that he'd since got in which is my dream bass - if he'd had that in August, I'd have had it then. So, I'm about to lose a packet but I'm looking to see if there's any interest in the ABZ so that I can get the Super P (curse this GAS) (update: I bought it...) I know that I fall into the more-money-than-sense category but here's a chance to get a virtually new, mint condition Dingwall bass for over £600 off retail. Condition of both the bass and the gig bag are mint - you'd kind of hope so! I have all the tools, strap locks and paperwork as well as the set of stainless steel strings that were taken off and replaced with Payson nickels when I bought it. Weight is a superlight 7lb 14oz and here's a link to the Bass Direct page with the full spec http://www.bassdirec...hite_Wenge.html Things of note are the series/parallel switches, the pickup selection options across the three pickups which give this thing an amazing tonal range. Oh - and the rinky little "reach across" strap button that allows you to have the bass hang further to the right and make it easier to reach the low frets. I'm based in Hertfordshire - happy for anyone to come round and try it out - the kettle's always on. I'd prefer not to post - Dingwall's come with a gig bag and I'm not sure I can readily package this up to survive the tender mercies of ParcelFarce. I can do my best and post within the UK if needed but the buyer will need to arrange the courier and insurance. Depending where you are, pm me and I may be able to deliver for a small contribution towards petrol. A splined shaft will, inevitably, end up with the spline just slightly "off" when tuned so you have the awful choice of being aesthetically pleasing or ever so slightly out of tune. So, a plain shaft with a grub screw allows infinite adjustment once tuned. Somebody make this, please.....

    I started 7 years ago at the tender age of 51 with no prior musical knowledge. I'm now in my second band and whilst I always loved music, I've found that playing an instrument has given me a completely new perspective. Along with everyone else, I'd strongly recommend a teacher. I started with a very simple book that explained all the bits of the instrument and showed me how to play a major scale so that when I went to my first lesson I at least knew how to make a noise. A practise amp will do fine and I'd suggest getting hold of a decent budget bass to get you started and then get something you really like once you've proved to yourself that you're going to stick with it. The Steinberger is a great little bass but it's a bit idiosyncratic and I found the absence of a headstock really off putting - my concern is that you'd get used to not having one and then find it hard to adjust to a "normal" bass. But there are loads of really good budget basses out there and the Steinberger is certainly one of them. If you get a fraction of the satisfaction that I've had form playing a bass, you'll love it.     I use a Zoom TAC-2R. Works brilliantly for me via the Thunderbolt port. Got it on offer from Gear4music. Cheap as chips but really nicely put together and simple to set up.

    Well that was a great day (made even better by walking away with a new bass having won the raffle!). Thanks to everyone involved in the organisation and to everyone who turned up with an incredible array of interesting gear. Although the highlight for me was the Tangerine Drizzle cake. Mmmm. This was my first bash and won't be my last - and it was all in the name of a good cause. On which note, I have no intention of selling the signed bass. But let me state for the record that if I ever do part with it, I promise that at least half of the proceeds will go back to the Youth Centre to support the work they do. There. Said it now, you can hold me to that! So thanks again - it was good to put faces to names. See you all next year
