Detuning a headless bass E string from E to D
thisnameistaken replied to Delberthot's topic in Accessories and Misc
I used to have a Hohner B2A headless that had a drop-D lever on the bridge. Maybe look into that? Edit: Like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hohner-Steinberger...l/dp/B000XT78XK -
I stopped paying attention when Hub left.

Fed up with Fenders? Maybe this is the solution...

The Godin is interesting and I've had a Godin before they make nice basses, but they only do that one in rubbish colours. -
What were you doing playing above the 5th fret in the first place? Sounds like human error to me.
-
Looks like a clever idea. Sure you can always tune up yourself but if it keeps a guitar in tune for a whole set then that's going to really improve anyone's gig from the audience's perspective.

Studio Build - Need some help
If it only needs the patio doors when you sell,
^^ This. Plan to install patio doors at some point, do it if/when you need to at a later date. No point living in a house you don't want to live in just because some fictional future buyer might not like it. -
That happens with digital pedals if you don't supply enough current for the whole chain - do you think it might be that?
No I had plenty of current spare. I assumed it was because the PSU I was using was 9v and the PSU that came with the EP was 9.6v, either that or it's just noisy when it doesn't have an isolated power supply.
-
My only issue with the Echo Park was that it was noisy when daisy-chained with other effects. I thought it was a good delay though.

Everyone says Warwicks have baseball bat necks. I disagree, but it's the 'accepted wisdom'.

Is he going for an ironic angle with this? I bought his first solo CD back in the mid '90s and it was full of insanely flashy technique that sounded like sh*t, he must've practiced that stuff endlessly. So is he saying that he agrees all that sounds like sh*t now, or is he just saying that we shouldn't do it and he should? Or was he just drunk/high when he did that interview?

Esperanza Spalding on a fretless jazz rippin it up..
If she played that same bass over the bridge pickup, where the string is tighter, and knocked the neck pickup and tone controls back a touch; she'd have a beautiful, tight, burly, burbly, punchy fingerstyke tone which was far more expressive and controlled and would make those glissandos really sing. ... IMHO IME YMMV etc etc. Everyone's tone goals are different, I just happen to hate that particular sound, and feel it's really out of place in that context.
I don't think it's that. I play over the neck pup on my jazzes. I used to play by the bridge when I was young and I know what sound you mean, but I prefer a meatier sound now and I am a bit less heavy-handed with my picking than I used to be (I used to break strings all the time). I do like the sound you're talking about - my Thumb does it brilliantly by default and it's my favourite bass - but on a jazz bass I prefer a more rounded sound. -
Yeah I have no problem with bands changing, but when their music gets simpler and more predictable that's not evolution.

The jazz in that first clip sounds terrible. That's the only bad thing I have to say about anything I've heard her do. -
Envelope - one tap envelopes to trigger a swell or similar effects following a preset evelope wave form. This can be used for one tap synth swells to to make crazy effects I'm a range of ways
Can it be triggered from an external source? Could you wire it up to operate like the EHX BMS, for example - triggering the envelope with each note?

I think the Deluxe Memory Boy would be a good place to start, great feature set for the money, looks very versatile and sounds great. I don't use a dedicated delay pedal but if I did I would buy that one.

I wish. When I was replacing my first set of strings (Evah mediums) I wanted something lower tension, and I'd played Spiros on someone else's bass, but those were my only references. I went looking for something like Spiros in tension but with less of a bright sound and found that only a couple of manufacturers published tension data. Very disappointing. Although I suppose raw figures might not mean much in terms of human experience - would 30lb feel like 3/4 of 40lbs? I don't know. But it would be nice to see the figures as a guide anyway.

Keidis was ace on the early records. If they'd continued to be an excellent band he would've continued to be an appropriate vocalist.
-
Is it as bad as their last three albums?
-
Can't believe how many of you make mistakes. It's easier to just do it right all the time. And anyway, I wrote the part, who's going to tell me I'm doing it wrong?
-
I like the bucket bass but I couldn't play any of the stuff I play on it, I would need at least 2 strings, preferably three. I also sing so I prefer to not have to change position too much so I don't have to think too much about intonation. I do like the concept though, and I agree that the cheaper you can do it the better. Also people are always impressed if you can get a tune out of something as simple as that. It's guaranteed to make money.

I think the Phil Jones gear is just too expensive to take out in the street. That's just my opinion though. IME there's little point in going for hi-fi in a town centre, and an expensive boutique amp would be a massive waste of money.
-
It's like asking 'Can taste be taught', really. The same question applies to any type of music. Some people will always play with more style and verve than others, even if that audacity involves playing less than expected.

I've used a piezo (K&K Bass Max) pickup into my Hartke (LH500) head and I did need a preamp to bring the impedance down to sensible levels before going into the Hartke - otherwise I just got a lot of high mids and very little volume. I ended up buying the Fishman Platinum Pro. You will struggle to get both a pickup and a preamp for £150 though. £200 would do it, if you look at used gear, but they don't come up all that often. You don't necessarily need an expensive pickup (Realist, Full Circle, etc.), cheaper bridge wing piezos often do a fine job.

Yeah we first considered busking as a way to promote our full electric band gigs - just a couple of us go out during the day with a board with details of the gig on it, and play some tunes in the afternoon before soundcheck, maybe do some more afterwards while waiting to go on. Passes the time and gets more punters in.
