1.
+1 way too many players constantly 'listen' to themselves instead of 'playing'
Bit O/T but way too many players listen to themselves instead of everybody else. The amount of times I've stopped a band in rehearsals to point out something that needs changing and everybody else has said 'I thought it sounded alright...'. Just not listening!
2.
- Can anyone recommend an overdrive which produces successful results with both bass and guitar, and which incorporates a blend or mix control to add dry signal to the effected signal?
Digitech Bad Monkey - a dirt cheap tubescreamer clone that works very well on bass.
Similarly, does anyone know of a filter/wah device that gives good results and is not specifically voiced for either guitar or bass? So far I can only think of the Boss AW3 and FX25 at the lower end of the market (which is incidentally where I'm looking, it's probably only an occasional/fun effect at best).
This will be harder to find. You'll probably want something that has band-pass and low-pass outputs. I would look at Q-Trons.
3. Mart thanks for the diagram that's really good, but I don't want to use Delano pickups - could you do me a diagram for Fender pickups? j/k! Also, this business of the blend centre position being much louder, is that true with both series and parallel settings or just one or the other? Thanks again for the diagram that is boss.
4. Yeah I was in a band for a while where the guitarist used a lot of delay and reverb and digital chicanery, and it pretty much ruled me out of doing that on bass, but left the door wide open for me to use fuzz and other noisy stuff.
5.
When looking for sound samples I like it when they simply play the same riff but with each of the different pickup/EQ options enabled, this will actually tell me what it will sound like - not some machinegun racket of someone trying to be Victor Wooten.
Yeah the only bassist on YouTube who demos basses well is Ed Friedland, because he concentrates on demoing the bass not himself.
6.
fingerstyle, pick, tapping are all equally as important and valid
Hehe. No they're not.
7. I've been meaning to put these on eBay but can't seem to get around to it, so here's a quick price reduction to see if I can tempt anyone here before I list it: £200 plus postage (£15) for the lot.
8. My Schroeder 1212L is light and loud and I like the sound but it's a piece of sh*t really. Just some hacked together panels and speakers that the dust caps like to separate from and buzz like arse, I'd expect better for the money tbh.
9. I've never liked the old country music P bass pickguard so it's not for me. But tbh I don't like the other P bass pickguard either, or P bass necks... They're rubbish aren't they, precisions?
10.
Cocaine and speed can make you think really quite fast.
I remember once coming home buzzing my tits off on speed and knowing I wasn't going to get any sleep, so I picked up a bass intending to do some serious practice, and ended up spending the next five hours tuning it.
11. Bless Norwood. There are loads of bands that were improved by the use of drugs - look at the sh*t the 'clean' Chili Peppers are putting out these days.
12. While we're on the subject of tone controls, did anyone ever stick a .1uF cap on one? I would like quite a lot of available roll-off, would this be bad in any way that I haven't thought of? Apart from perceived volume loss I suppose?
13. Still the OC-2. Although I'm very fond of just a single square wave oscillator. Probably all those years wasted on Nintendos. Actually the OC-2 sound isn't far off, really...
14.
Take something Like Adele, Jessie J or anything that is on the "pop" channels and indie it up .
Like the way Adele de-Indied The Cure's 'lovesong'? Yeah you could go around putting right what whiny singers have done to decent Cure songs for the sake of mobile phone adverts.
15. I've never had a SYB-5 so I don't know. I have used a Bespeco VM-19 (basically the same as this EX1) on a Meatwad and my M9 in the past, and on a Korg G5, and the recommended pedal for the SYB-5 (Roland EV-5) is just another rebranded Bespeco pedal, so I would imagine they would work, but I can't say definitely either way, sorry.
16. I wouldn't dare spend 20 grand on a bass. Unless I was much more talented than I am, and it was a double bass.
17. I don't usually go for boutique stuff but that's really sweet.
18. Shemeck bought a pickguard from me. Nice guy.
19. Ah right. Hmm this isn't as straightforward as I thought it would be. I definitely want to stay passive though, maybe I'll knock the blend idea on the head.
20. Ivan bought a pedal PSU from me, he's a nice guy.
21. I went in G4M the other weekend to try their basses, they had a few on the shop floor, they were all terrible. You would have to re-string it, probably replace the bridge, probably the tailpiece, and get someone to shoot the fingerboard for you, it would cost hundreds, everything on them is garbage honestly I would steer well clear. Even their top-of-the-range carved one was shocking, maybe it could've been made into a good bass with enough investment but I wouldn't want to take the gamble, and you wouldn't be improving the value of it as you ploughed money into it.
22.
That may be a bit harsh! Aside from the drop-tune functions and momentary switch, the new Whammy is polyphonic. While we are yet to try the pedal, it is highly likely that, like other polyphonic octave pedals such as the EHX Pog or T-Rex Octavius, the tracking will be almost perfect.
They're not tracking anything though are they? They're just re-sampling the input signal and reproducing it at the desired pitch. Harmony is different and requires pitch recognition and if it's going to be polyphonic it will introduce even worse latency problems and all sorts of nonsense. Regardless of how new a pedal is it won't fix the fundamental problem with the physics of pitch-tracking a bass note.
