Bit more story might be useful? I'm in York and would help if I could, but if - for example - this involves transporting a 8x10 cab to Somerset I'm not going to be able to do it.
Hmm - is that really true? I wouldn't say so. My first unlined fretless was a Kay back in 1989. Unlined boards don't have to equate with an expensive fretless bass.
+1. I've only ever had unlined fretlesses and the only one I ever bought that was moderately expensive was a Stingray.

I do wonder how many people are actually using slap for anything, I imagine it's a very small proportion of us. I do sometimes use it for bashing out a beat - nothing intricate or funky but just a "2 Tribes" type of approach - but it's really rare and I don't think I'd record like that, I'd probably use a synth instead.

I must admit about the only bass guitar I am considering buying at the moment is a custom Sandberg J. Probably JJ, probably a 5. If I knew exactly what I wanted I would've ordered it already. They look like great basses I must say.

I imagine there could be practical benefits to this "floating thumb" technique if you are a studio musician, because surely it would be easier to play very evenly with that technique. But, serious question: How easy is it to rock the f*** out with your picking arm suspended in mid-air like that, and your thumb "floating" above the bass? Along with playing my bass parts and singing my harmony vocals I also have a responsibility to rock the f*** out throughout our gigs, and I can imagine it would be difficult to do that with this picking technique. I can imagine for fretboard-gazing prog bands it's a moot point, since no dancing ever happens to that kind of music because it doesn't really appeal to humans.

I've often been the first person at the venue, or been let in by bar staff and the sound guy's nowhere to be found. But then I've also been mid-performance and watched the sound guy leave the room, to come back twenty minutes later with a pizza box. Some people are just that professional.
(and the Maxon AF-9 is allegedly the true descendent)
How does that bit of lore go? I thought the Q-Tron was the updated Mu-Tron, given that it was designed by Mike Beigel?

Diana Ross was pretty foxy when she was younger. Did you say there's a bass player in that video?
But arco double bass. Now That's a sound I can use!!!
I do practice pizz, arco and slap on my DB. To be honest I don't think I'm going to get very far with the slap because the setup required on the bass is too much of a compromise, but I would like a second bass to rig up as a slap bass, I do like the sound. Bowing the bass though, what a killer sound. And loud!

On the only P bass I ever owned, I did indeed move the thumbrest to that position, where the J pickup should be.
TNiT I actually think I misread your statement, ...
Don't worry man, I have weathered the hoo-ha like always.
However, it does not diminish the negative or provocative nature of your post.
I should sincerely hope not.
Personally, I can't stand that song either ... and Ellie has not done anything to change that for me, I don't think she sang it particularly well either. I can't see the point of her doing it other than as a marketing exercise.
So we actually agree entirely about everything I said? I am now smiling at memories of the hoo-ha we've enjoyed from your one misplaced rebuttal on page one.

Yes it is, well spotted.

I always figured learning to slap or tap is like learning karate. It's only worth doing if you have a personal interest in it, because you're unlikely to find a use for it in real life. 99% of my playing is with my fingers but I do use a pick sometimes, I like the sound.
You are coming across as a closed minded person
You seem to be determined to make some point or other but you haven't figured out what it is yet. I might just leave you to it.
although as I have seen in other threads its not unlike you just to ruffle a few feathers just for the sake of it.
I genuinely don't do that. I know it looks like that but I don't. I just often have a different opinion about stuff. I don't expect anyone will believe me or give a toss but that's the truth. Some people just assume that if someone disagrees with them, then that person must be trying to wind them up. I suppose those people must be quite conceited.
Hating any kind of music is never good for us as musicians, Can anyone think of a type of music that does not have elements that are enjoyable to someone?
I've never denied that Elton John's songs have elements which are enjoyable to "some people". All I said was that I hate them. And I don't think it can be bad for me as a musician to experience strong emotions about something; if Elton John had felt anything other than indulgently sentimental about everything he ever encountered in his life then maybe he wouldn't have ended up with a catalogue of such thoroughly sh*t songs.
I wonder what people thought the first time someone distorted a guitar? I bet some people maybe like TNIT would not of listened to anything that had even a hint of a raunchy Gibson lurking.
Yeah. Because Elton John is a pioneer isn't he. He's famous for constantly pushing the boundaries of pop music, but people like me just aren't switched on enough to appreciate it. Look up 'straw man'.
Perhaps it would be prudent for those who don't have an appreciation for Ellie to leave
The argument is about Elton John. I haven't expressed an opinion about Ellie Goulding. I suppose you could call it thread drift, but don't blame me - it would be over if anyone still had anything to say about Ellie Goulding.
TNIT, you're pretty much coming off as repressed. Perhaps it might not be such a bad idea to open your mind a little. I usually listen to Metal, but i pretty much like a little bit of everything. Elton John included, and i refuse to believe that someone can hate every song in a repetoire of an artist as diverse as he is, without there being some kind of prejudicial foundation.
Yeah I hate metal as well, can't stand most of it. Maybe metal and Elton John have more musically in common than you realise. Off the top of my head I can't think of an Elton John song I like and I am not going to go through the frustration of trying to think of one, because it will mean thinking of all the ones that are infuriatingly awful. Anyway why can't people just accept that I hate Elton John records and have done with it? Some of you are reacting like I just bummed your mum or something.

What are you listening to right now?

Bit of ADF Been playing along to RAFI and Community Music with my double bass and swapping between ska bass lines and eastern-y fills. Addictive. -
No on this one I stand by my original on this one! To not listen to a song because of who wrote the original is musically totally ignorant. End of Im not going get pulled in, Thats my stance on your post to me its still a dumb post.
You'd imagine that I'm fairly unfamiliar with this famous piece of mawkish Elton John tripe, or that the covering singer has done something especially novel with it that I might change my long-established opinion of what an awful song it is? I assert once more that it is in fact your posts that are dumb.
All of this is correct and possibly put nicer than my dumb? But Correct all the same TNIT.
I suppose Nigel didn't feel like expanding on what he has said but I am not going to worry about what my posts might "suggest to the suggestible", especially posts I make in very plain language, the thrust of which is frankly obvious and contain no hint of subtext whatsoever.
I totally agree with sild too what a dumb statement from TNIT! Just because someone comes through a certain channel they have no talent then?
I never mentioned talent because talent is irrelevant, I f***ing hate Elton John songs and I don't care who is performing them I'm not listening. How about you read what you're responding to before you contribute any more "dumb" statements of your own.
All I get from that is that dingwalls low B is the only low B to have a long sustain.
I did get a "If you are a bass player and feel you don't get enough attention, buy a really wonkey-looking bass" feeling briefly. Perhaps that was the subliminal message.

Garden centres usually sell it, it's much cheaper on eBay though.
Gimme your thoughts
"Oh look yet another Stingray".

Where / what is the subliminal message?
You think 5's are ugly. Take a look at this. http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_trip.html
Wow, tasteful! Some of these bass builders should hire a designer, even if he just does an hour a week briefly explaining why their basses look so gash.

I just play 4 strings because you get less aggro from guitarists. I'm sure we've all had those looks.

I don't like black ones because they look grubby too easily. I don't like red, I don't like sparkly paints, pearloid pickguards or quilted maple. White would be good, I think sunbursts are popular because basses have big bodies and it breaks them up a bit, same with natural finishes. The only unsual-coloured bass I've had was when I once sprayed a Jazz orange with car paint (it was metallic blue from the factory) and I really liked it.
