That's such an unfair and ignorant statement my friend. And suggests to the suggestible reader, that maybe you are unable to distinguish between those with real musicality and those who simply have a singing voice exploited by TV moguls. I'm pretty sad about that because I like you, respect you, and know you are better than making deliberately provocative statements without sensible foundation.
What were you drinking last night? It's as straightforward a statement as it's possible to make: I wouldn't choose to listen to either an X Factor song or an Elton John song, they would each hurt my ears and make me homicidal. I don't really care how real someone's musicality is if they're doing Elton John covers. I wouldn't listen to Dead Milkmen do Candle In The Wind either. Would you?
-
Fortunately I don't have to choose between X Factor wannabees and Elton John cover versions, there is a ton of actually-good music I can listen to instead.

I hate Elton John and Elton John's songs. This is bloody awful.
Aw man, that sucks. I presume the rest of you will be 'having a word' with her at some point?
I don't know what's going to happen, we're all pretty angry. Also it turned out our old trombonist actually made it to the venue, he was going to surprise us all (he had to leave the band at the end of the summer when he moved to Banbury) so it would've been great to catch up with him, but no... Quite angry!
-
Our trumpet player cancelled our gig last night. Told us it was because she was ill, told the venue it was because of snow. I'm still quite angry about it.

I have never felt a fingerboard that was so unpleasant. Go out and play a lot of double basses, see if you can find one that has a fingerboard that feels unpleasant to you, and find out what material it is. Then you know how to avoid it.

Tomorrow night at Carpe Diem, Leeds - 28th Nov
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Gigs
We've had to cancel this because of a lazy band member. Who now has three other angry band members. -
You have fairly tremendous facility on the instrument, very impressive.

Well someone asked us this afternoon if we would headline a show at Carpe Diem in Leeds tomorrow night (Nov 28th), so we said "OK", because we generally think that playing a show is better than not playing a show, so we generally just say "OK". We're nice like that. If you'll be in central Leeds tomorrow night then come along, there's no cover charge on the door, and four bands. We're on at 10:30 apparently. We usually get billed as "jolly ska/punk" but really we're "surprisingly miserable reggae/punk". We're quite good at it though.

It's first, it's always first for me. I think you get used to where your tuner is in your chain and you just keep it there because it's a fundamental thing. But of course I think first is best and that's why mine is first and here are my justifications: 1) I can tune the signal straight from my guitar. 2) I don't have to bypass other effects to tune my guitar. 3) I can tune after songs have finished while delays are still going apeshit. If I could think of three reasons why it would be better to have my tuner last then maybe I would change it.

I think you're probably right, but it's stiff to take £80 for a fingerboard fit after £135 for a set of strings. And I strung them up so tidy I don't want anybody unwinding them! -
So to summarise, nylon core strings tend to be looser but are fatter than steel core, whereas steel core can have a a higher tension but they are generally not as thick??? Is this correct?
Not necessarily, no - it seems to me that materials and also the structure of the core play a part. The synthetic core in my old Evahs certainly didn't make them any less stiff, they were brutish strings. Whereas I just stuck spiros on my bass today and they are much easier. If you look you can maybe find tension figures for the strings you're considering, many of the manufacturers publish this info.

Bit of noise with new strings - advice please!
thisnameistaken posted a topic in EUB and Double Bass
I've just put a new set of strings on my bass. I took off a full set of Evah mediums, put on Evah lights (D & G) and Spiro lights (E & A). I've just got it up to pitch and had a noodle, and I'm finding there's a fairly quiet, fluffy-sounding buzz during pizz attack on the E and A in a small clutch of lower positions, and it's coming from the string at the point where the note is stopped. Most noticable on the E. Is this the string running out of room to vibrate / fingerboard getting in the way? It doesn't happen further up the neck and the open notes are fine. If so: I have an adjustable bridge - do you think if I crank it up it will go away? Or do I need to have the fingerboard looked at? It might've been doing this all along to be honest, I never got much sustain in those positions from my old Evahs but they were so thumpy I couldn't hear any buzz. Maybe this was why there wasn't much sustain? Any advice much appreciated. -
Too Nice To Talk To - the Beat
Tune. I saw the UK incarnation of The Beat last summer and I don't know who's playing bass for them but he is the man. Best bassist I've seen in forever. -
My left fingers are numb... is that normal?
Er, no. Are you right-handed? Numbness is bad, you should try to figure out what's causing that and fix it. If it's your fretting hand then you're probably gripping the neck too tightly - do you feel tense when you play?

You'll want a 5 string though. -
4 strings not enough or loosing my roots?
thisnameistaken replied to DaveB's topic in General Discussion
Play what you like, don't worry about it. I must say though I am the opposite to you - when I go back to 4 strings I feel I have a lot more freedom for some reason. It's weird but I suppose I just feel at home on 4. -
I quite like that.
Thanks ,i did read your earlier post ,but i've no clue about DB strings, i presume weichs means light gauge?
Exactly yes. I found mediums to be fun to play but I think lighter gauges will work better on my bass. Also I'm just getting over tendonitis in both wrists so I reckon lighter strings isn't a bad idea really.

Innovation Honeys - barely used, brand new last weekend
thisnameistaken replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Fair enough, that's sort-of what I expected. I was just wondering if they'd be any good for unamplified busking but I guess probably not. -
I've seen a couple of people buy basses that I had a passing interest in, then bung £200 on the price and stick them back up for sale. I've never seen them actually sell though.
