1. I don't know to be honest but I imagine the bigger cost of replacing a bridge is getting a luthier to shape it for you. IIRC the bridge on the bass you bought was pretty high, it might be cheaper just to get that one cut down a bit? Unless you've already gone at that one yourself with whatever sharp implements you found in the kitchen? Because that's the sort of thing I would do. I once routed a network cable between two floors of a house using a roast fork, a bread knife and a cigarette lighter. I am the DIY king.
2.
Until then, here's a link as to why the older version is better than the XO (note the negatives of tone sucking have been dealt with with the true bypass mod I've had done). CLICK
I totally stand behind everything I said in that post. I don't have a BMS at the moment (for the first time in years) but it's one of my favourite effects ever, and this older 24v model is simply better than the newer XO one. It sounds absolutely massive. Also, a friend who looks a lot like Natalie Portman was over at my flat once when I was trying out some new sounds with my BMS and she yelled from the other room "THAT SOUNDS ****ING AWESOME". This is all the encouragement you should need. I didn't have the expression mod on mine though, and I have some questions: Can you still set the filter sweep time with the rate slider after that mod is done? If so, is there a toggle to switch between the rate slider and the pedal or do you just drop the trigger slider to zero to use the expression pedal? Does the expression pedal simply take over full-time from the stop frequency slider? What if you unplug the expression pedal - can you use the stop frequency slider instead?
3.
So far this series I make that two really decent acts - Imelda Mae and Bellowhead.
I still haven't watched it on iPlayer yet. I know my girlfriend will want to watch it with me because she loves Bellowhead's last album (which I bought for her after seeing them on Jools last time!). But her brother rang me the other day to say M.I.A. had some guys from The Specials behind her and I love both acts so I'm really looking forward to seeing that too.
Imagine we have the producer of Later on Basschat right now. What would have to be on next week's show to get you jumping up and down with enthusiasm? Or even grudging admiration.
Beastie Boys (say what you like they are amazing live, and can do what they do with almost any instrumentation you happen to have available), The Skints, Hunting Bears (Leeds), any of the following: Sonic Youth, Pixies, Breeders.
4.
Here is a young Peruvian chap that has a very nice ABZ 5 and plays some wicked latin music on it.
Hmm. His G sounds well out of tune once he gets up into visible fret area. Not a good advert for a Novak-boarded bass. Also notable for what looks like a "floating thumb" muting technique, combined with the Dingwall marks him out as a bit of a bass anorak. But good luck to him getting a gig anyway.
5.
I had this set up in the rehearsal studio last night & was blown away by my tone
I used one of these... ... into a home-made 1x12 cab at a festival last summer and it sounded effing brilliant on stage.
6. I'd probably agree with you that those are the strongest points of the M9, except I don't think there's enough good chorus/phase/flange to choose form, and I've never tried the Boss so I couldn't compare them.
7. What made you decide on the M9 in the end?
8. He probably wouldn't have ended up in Yes, so more people would've enjoyed his music. Unless he'd ended up in Rush or Genesis or something. That would've been tragic.
9.
Nice to hear he`s a decent bloke. And he`s 7 foot 3 you know.
A venue I used to play at had a doorman called Andy who was 7'4". He used to give me piggyback rides (I'm 6'2") he was ace. Turned out he was hopeless at basketball, poor guy.
10. I got a flat tyre on the A64 last week and Chris Wolstenholme pulled over and helped me change the wheel, and then he taught me to play Hysteria, lovely geezer. I tried flagging down that ****er Alain Caron first but he pretended he hadn't seen me, ***hole.
11. I had two friends who started playing guitar. But once I bought a bass and started paying attention to bass players, it turned out all my favourite records I remembered from when I was a little nipper (Specials, Madness, Blockheads) had awesome bass lines. Coincidence?
12. I've only ever shipped one thing overseas (a Stingray to a buyer in Spain [jsixties]) and I used Interparcel. It arrived on time, safe and sound.
13. To be honest, I would probably look for two pedals rather than one pedal that does two things very well. I think that would be hard to find.
14. Cool article Dan, very well written.
15.
Do what some of us on here have done and have a look at the Promethean amps. Essentially a 1x10 combo at 250 watts/500 with an extension speaker or they now do a 2x10 combo version. But, and this is the best bit, the head is removable for use with other cabs!
His budget is £500, so I doubt he wants to spend £600 on a 1x10 combo for doing stoner rock! There are always dusty old 410s on eBay that go for £150 or so, that would make much more sense. Like this, maybe. Or this.
16. I keep trying to get our front man / guitarist / songwriter to take the reins a bit more! We're pretty democratic in that if anybody in the band really doesn't like something we either do it differently or stop doing it, but he's got a good head on his shoulders and good ideas, so I don't think it would be a bad thing if he were to start calling the shots a bit more.
17.
I've got to be honest, I'd never heard of him before I joined basschat. Does that make me a bad person?
+1 I don't have a problem with the guy at all (I really don't know anything about him) but looking over that thread with BBC I don't think there's anything wrong with what people were saying about his article, and maybe he could've handled the situation better. Ah well, water under the bridge.
18. Grinny Grandad! http://www.carbonlogic.co.uk/artist/grinny...d/trumpet-woman
19. If you and him split up who gets custody of the drummer? Won't anybody think of the drummers?
20.
Okay here goes!!! DONT LAUGH! - remember I don't know one bass from another although I am learning fast!! and..... I am, after all, growing old more disgracefully than most Grandmothers!!! it's a Gear4music jobby http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/...p-Pack-Black/1E
Hey my first bass cost me £50 and was made out of plywood. I also think the tuners were made out of bonfire toffee judging by how easily they snapped. Your P copy can't be any worse than that.
21. I'd agree with what's been said above (but not Aguilar - there are cheaper brands that will do the job). I had to get rid of my 410 because I couldn't load it in and out of my first floor flat on my own. Or rather if I did, I would've ended up face down in a pile of vertebrae at some point. But yeah if you can shift one, a 410 would be ideal.
22.
has said that he would rather hear a one note groove then mindless soloing
They all say that. What happens when the interviewer goes home? (I know the bassline on that VV Brown single is very simple but please don't link to it, I cannot stand to hear that bloody awful song again.)
23. Sounds like things are coming along nicely for you. How is your left wrist coping? That can be an awkward joint for bass guitarists because the neck is so long - the lower positions can be a long way away, and you need all your fingertips to be able to touch the board - all adds up to discomfort if you're not careful. Try to stay relaxed, don't stretch for one-finger-per-fret at the lowest positions, use the first knuckle of your thumb against the back of the neck rather than the pad/tip, basically do whatever you need to do to keep that joint within acceptable comfort parameters!
24. The Blowtorch is a very MXR pedal - it's well-behaved and quiet and nice. But who wants that from a fuzz pedal? Even with everything up full it wasn't fuzzy enough. I like the fact that they put a clean blend onboard and the switchable mids are also a good idea, but if I'm putting 18v into a distortion pedal I expect to get my voltage's worth back out of it.
25. There are some really nice-sounding cheap and powerful amps about (Hartke LH500 for example), so I would say cab(s).
