Level 42 don't particulalry move me that much but I do appreciate it for what it is. Bring back Boon!
+1 -
"Schiz garret" =) slap´n´pop and double-thumb

You are the only slap bass player I like. -
Are we having a new thread every time Level 42 play, or could this tour maybe be kept a bit tidier?

Nottingham would make more sense if you're trying to make it geographically neutral. I would turn up if it was Nottingham. It's also good for rail links from the north.

What's with the taped-on lumps on the Boss pedals? -
Yeah I love the sound. Having an issue with my Thumb at the moment though - seems to be losing some grunt in the second octave for some reason, very strange.

Enjoying some soothing old-school gangster sounds. -

I use a Bassmax too, works well on my el-cheapo ply bass.

Octavius Squeezer - where in the UK do I buy one?
thisnameistaken replied to Sean's topic in Effects
For Uprising you'd need a fuzz and an octaver, mixed. The Octavius Squeezer wouldn't do that reliably. For Starlight you just need a fuzz and a BP filter (maybe don't even need the filter depending on the character of the distortion). The Squeezer could do that, but it seems like a lot of money to spend for such a simple sound. I really like my Squeezer and I get a lot of use out of it, but mostly as a programmable filter and a gated fuzz, I don't really use the oscillator side of things much because the tracking isn't reliable enough on faster material. If you want the oscillator sounds I would look at a different pedal, unless/until Chunk improve the tracking. But I wouldn't hold your breath it's been 18 months or so since I last heard that they were working on it. -
Some tunes we recored on the cheap at York Uni
Sounds like you could be on Jools Holland soon.
That sounds like a back-handed compliment! Like "I bet you'd get a positive review in the NME"? -
Oh, top tune to learn since it has a lot of open strings and steady tempo: Time bomb. Also, in the ska vein: Dandy Livingstone's original 'Rudy', Drop The Ratchet, Stupid Marriage (all can be based around open strings), Racist Friend, Ghost Town...

My missus was insistent that it lived downstairs and made our house look cultural and fancy! I don't know how she'll react when I buy the second one. Maybe then it will make sense to have one on each floor so I can stop knocking lumps out of the scroll when I lug it up the stairs.
Animals in Dangerous Situations, we played woodstock this year. Tom, the guitarist knows suzy iirc, and aran from make it better later plays drums (learn from playing rock band!).
Oh I see, I haven't seen you guys but I've seen you billed around York. I thought Aaron had moved to London by now? It was Aaron who recorded these tracks for us! -
Yeah the only thing that bothered me when I got mine was that I didn't have the stamina to play it as much as I wanted to, I had to build up to it over the first month or two. I still can't walk past it without playing it. I've got it leaning in a corner of the dining room so whenever I'm waiting for something in the kitchen (kettle to boil, pan of pasta to cook, etc.) I can have a bash.

Don't you have a tuner on your phone Wayne? That's what I use to tune my DB.
I think that we're probably making sweeping generalisations.
Glad my sweeping generalisation did not go unnoticed.
It takes a lot of hard work and luck to get famous. I've seen some very bitter people who've spent their lives trying to get famous when none of their friends have had the bottle to tell them that their songs are not the great masterpieces they think they are.
I think people in cover bands don't realise that people playing originals aren't doing it to "get famous". Maybe they've been playing covers for so long that they've forgotten what it's like to play music for fun instead of for money. They could do to join an originals band and be reminded of why they started playing instruments in the first place.
That is a crap analogy isn't it. How about this one. "Why wipe your arse with paper in England, when you can caress it with silk in India?"
Why experience the drudgery of a flight to India when you can have sedation and wake up there feeling a bit groggy and wondering why your bum hurts but still be grateful that you didn't have to make your own entertainment for a few hours.
Absolutely Why would anyone want to flip McD burgers when they could be creating unique culinary experiences?
These things always end in a competition between bullshit analogies.
Your failing is that you don't have a mature enough attitude to be able to appreciate forms of music that you don't like or play yourself.
Call me odd but I have an emotional reaction to music. I don't obliquely attempt to appreciate it, I either like it or I don't. Do you honestly hear some sh*te on the radio or see some crap on TV and think "Hmm, what can I enjoy about this?". I don't, I change the channel.
The truth is most people in cover bands have, still or will play in originals. I got to a point where I felt I have invested too much in to playing to work for free. I like people who play for money they tent to have a better attitude and less ego.
I can't remember ever being billed with an originals band that had ego problems. We did once get booked to play with a cover band in the USA though - they did top 40 stuff and Stevie Wonder covers. Their singer came backstage where I was warming up and told me to leave, I told him to ask nicely, which resulted in our band and their band having a full-on punch-up. Nine of us and four of them, hahaha. But seriously I don't think I've ever come across an originals band that had ego problems, every band I've gigged with have been nothing but polite, friendly and helpful.
You really believe that's the only alternative? I know some great covers bands who play pretty unusual stuff to rapturous audiences. In fact, what they're doing is widening the audiences' musical horizons.
In that case, where are the audience coming from? If they know they're not going to be molly-coddled with a set of songs they already know all the words to, then why are they going to see the band? Be careful with your answer, it might result in hundreds of cover bands dropping Mustang Sally or Hard To Handle from their setlists, which could be the final nail in the coffin for live music in the UK.
Do some people only enjoy playing bass if they're playing music they love?
Yes. Is that so strange? I do it because I like the music that comes out, not because I get joy from the mechanical aspect of moving my fingers around or from observing dads dancing.
