I don't understand why thumb rests are still put underneath the strings rather than above them (well, it is on the CV Jazz).
Stick flatwounds on your jazz, mute the strings with your palm and pick with your thumb. It sounds dope. I'll have your tug bar if you're not using it.
 2.
It is poor advice to say "there's no wrong way to play a bass" There are lots of wrong ways to play, most of which can cause serious (and sometimes permanent) damage.
I had given the OP the benefit of the doubt and assumed he/she would be smart enough to avoid using high stress wrist positions for long periods. It's alarmist and untrue to say there are lots of wrong ways to play, which can cause serious and sometimes permanent damage. I don't know anybody who suffered crippling consequences from playing bass guitar.
 3. One thing I would say is valuable to learn is to force yourself into picking with alternating fingers as much as possible, so you can lead with either finger. This will be important later on if you decide you want to be able to play really fast.
 4. Yeah six weeks for them to put right something that shouldn't have been broken in the first place is six weeks too long. Give them the hairdryer treatment.
 5.
is one regarded as being the better technique to practice?
No. Personally I mute strings above the one I'm playing with my fretting hand, and strings below with the spare fingers on my picking hand. I think. Maybe I don't, it's not something I think about, but that's how I imagine it works... Some players can get quite fervent about promoting convoluted techniques they saw in a Hot Licks video once, but just do whatever works for you, there's no wrong way to play the bass.
 6. I rub it both ways (oo-er) and it hasn't made my bow explode or anything.
 7.
It'd be interesting to compare the Fodera list against Ken Smith and Alembic pricing, as they are other big names in a similar vain.
It's also interesting to note that the shape of Fodera, Alembic and Ken Smith basses are all fairly unpleasant to look at. However much money they make they are apparently not interested in giving any of it to designers.
 8.
Make a Fodera sound like Jaco, Jamerson or Miller? Nah. Make a Jazz or P Bass sound like a Fodera? Nah.
What does a Fodera sound like? I didn't think it was a distinctive-sounding instrument.
As an extreme example, would Mark King sound like Mark King if he used a passive P bass? Of course not.
Bet he'd still endorse them if they were handing them out for free though.
 9. Are stages really a good place to mic a bass cab? In the studio I prefer to DI, I can imagine the results are a lot less predictable on a stage.
 10. I went to see that Scott Pilgrim flick last weekend, he's got a lovely fireglo Ric bass that gets destroyed fighting a vegan bass player with a Mustang. In the next scene the Ric was held together with gaffa tape and I was distraught!
 11. The bass player for The Beat the other week was a pretty round-looking dude and he had way better tone than me.
 12. Orange ones sound best. You have to burn off all the Fender finish first, then spray it orange, and then it sounds good. Oh and replace the bridge and pickups. Then it sounds good. Well, "OK for a Fender".
 13. How much for a Fender logo on it?
 14.
err, no. I'd set bass volume to three quarters then turn the amp up to normal required volume. Then when the guitarist and the drummer start up you can alter the volujme as needed from your bass without having to trot back to the amp.
My band are always telling me to turn up even when I'm already louder than everybody else. I love my band. Then again they're probably trying to drown out my vocals.
 15.
I'm trying to decide what to do, f*ck about with the action, get some different strings for the E and A, or swap the whole set out. I haven't tried Spiro Mitts on this bass yet. Wondering if I should try that.
I had wondered about leaving the D and G on and trying some more bright/modern sounding strings on the E and A, but while I like the sound of the D and G they are just too tight to slap. And I'm worried about ending up with mis-matching tension between the mixed set of strings. I'd like to try the evah weichs (mine are the mediums) to see how the tension is but I'm concerned that this won't fix the pizz sustain issue. It's hard work trying to figure this stuff out, I sympathise with you.
 16. To be honest it never occurred to me that it might be the bass... I've never heard anyone else's bass strung with these it's always spiros around here. I don't mean to hijack your thread but do you think a soundpost adjustment make some difference?
 17. I don't suppose you've tried evah pirazzis? I'm looking for a replacement for them at the moment. I like the dark sound and the way they bow, but they are very high tension and I'd like to slap them more. Also the biggest down-side for me is that they seem to have almost no pizz sustain on the E and A which makes intonation really tricky sometimes. In terms of the thump/sustain, do you know how this set compare to evahs?
 18. I've been really hyped about playing lately but I can't because I've got to rest my sick old man wrists.
 19. I always miss it when females show themselves.
 20. I used to have a rack tuner (someone gave me one when they upgraded) and there were a few things I didn't like about it. Firstly, I don't really want the audience to watch me tune up. Secondly, because my gear is behind me, it means I have to turn my back on the audience to tune up. If you have a mic on stage you'll probably want to use it while you're tuning up and you can't do that with a rack tuner. Finally it just seems like a lot of space to take up with a tuner.
 21.
Right, I think a few people need to read this thread - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=64748 Or watch this video! http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-behave...-internet-forum
To me the first rule of using a forum is to ensure you really do understand something before you post brassy replies to it.
 22.
You must have accidently logged into the wrong forum then mate
Yeah you're right, f*** music, bass guitar is better.
 23.
Here's my 2 pence worth: I think we should all be happy that there is gonna be a song in the charts with a loud, prominent and most importantly REAL bass line!!!!
I'm more a fan of music than I am the bass guitar but each to their own.
