Where has the funk of EOPE and ROSC albums gone?
"He" wasn't responsible for that:
Remember when they had Toby Smith and Stuart Zender and their records were interesting?
2.
Nah, they have Paul Turner on bass at the moment. He joined in 2005 just after Dynamite (which Derrick played on). Don't Give Hate a Chance is a cracking bass line!
Oh yeah I was thinking of their drummer. Too many Derricks!
 3.
OOoooooOOOO, "controversial"! You have forgotten to put Derrick McIntyre on that list!!
I thought he still played for them? He wasn't as important to their sound anyway.
 4.
So, what do people think?
Remember when they had Toby Smith and Stuart Zender and their records were interesting?
 5. Singing is what lifts me out of a funk so anything I can sing along to. Sometimes it's Beach Boys or Toots & The Maytals, could be Cud or Elvis Costello, maybe Cypress Hill or Beastie Boys. Whatever.
 6. It sounds like his timing is well off.
 7. I'm sorry if other bass players don't like my live sound. Please do push through the crowds of kids dancing to tell me exactly what's wrong with it.
 8. Could ask J P Montoya what his solution was. NSFW. Sorry that is no help whatsoever.
 9. Mostly it's the other bands. I'm a bass player - nobody else knows I exist.
The next one I get quite a lot is my mate saying "been speaking to the other band's bassist, said you're pretty awesome" I just wish it didn't have to come through a mate! I like anyone who rates me playing
Our trumpet player told me she liked the bass part on a new song we were working on tonight. This is after a slew of fanzine reviews of our last EP have turned up this month and nobody has mentioned the bass on any of the tracks despite it being right at the front of the mix on everything. Bleh. I know my parts are rocking, I don't need clueless fanzine-producing punk fans to tell me that.
 10. Get a second Aggi cab.
I'm making the wise decision to give the other half £150 towards her wedding shoes
How much are this woman's shoes that she's planning to wear for a day? Man I will never understand why people get married.
 11.
I thought that there probably would be a lack of output, but it wouldnt even drive my tuner! I was using an Orange Bass Terror, so I presume that should have been ok?
If it was purely an impedance mismatch problem with the piezo into an appliance expecting a magnetic pickup signal then you could expect misbehaviour - a very weak signal with a terrible sound focused in high mids was my experience - but no sound at all is suspicious. Have you tried really cranking your amp to see if you hear anything? If you do get a weedy signal when it's cranked then perhaps it's just that you need a preamp. If you have a friendly neighbourhood double bassist who would let you plug your uke into their gear you could find out for sure if it's just that your gear can't handle the output from a piezo. FWIW I wouldn't expect the Orange Bass Terror to get away with it, without a preamp to sort the impedance out.
 12. That's pretty f***ing sweet! Who made this?
 13.
Here's my beloved with my signature doodle:
I've probably seen more pictures of your bass than anybody else's and never knew it had LEDs in it! No offense (to anybody - I know a lot of the Status-owning Mark King fans on here have LEDs fitted) but I think they're really tacky. A bit like fitting UV underlights to your mum's old Saxo.
 14. I quite like his records and he is a phenomenal musician but I've seen him live twice and didn't really get into it either time. But the reason I've maintained a pedal board for so long is 100% because of his influence.
 15. Norwood from Fishbone had one on a 6-string Thumb bass back in the early '90s. I don't know if it ever got recorded but he used it live a lot, generally for silliness, but I remember it was impressive. Then again he could've played pretty much anything and I would've been impressed, I was quite impressionable and he was immensely cool.
 16. Thought I would post this eBay link for him, it's a really nice bass, 42" scale, I was playing it only last weekend and it's very loud and present and woody-sounding, almost reedy on the G it's really very nice. If I had the cash I would've bought it myself already. Looks like he's bundling the Realist with it too, which I can confirm is in working order and sounds very good and honest on this bass. This was his main gigging bass until a few weeks ago and I've been jealous of it for quite a while. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230519033408 It's in York. I would add if you're as tall as me (6'2"+) you will probably need to replace the end pin, it doesn't quite extend far enough for me. Other than that I would say it needs no work at all.
 17.
That would be a massive help (assuming you know what you're talking about! ).
Well I am fairly familiar with cheap basses I bought one myself earlier this year. I can at least tell you if there's anything obviously wrong with it and what bits you might want fettling, who could do it for you and what it'd be likely to cost.
I live just round the corner on Gillygate and was planning on walking to Holgate at some point if you're up for it? That's if I don't get talked into getting one of those lovely old B&H's!
Yeah I could wander over to Holgate with you. If you're arranging to go over there send me a PM with your mobile #, I should be about evenings except Friday (rehearsal).
 18.
the one on gumtree - your guess is as good as mine, can't tell form the pictures really so you need to take someone along to have a look.
I'd be happy to come along with you if you want an opinion, I'm on Bootham so not far away.
 19.
Can anyone advise me on this? http://york.gumtree.com/york/03/63756203.html It looks cheap and nasty to me, but it's within walking distance and I can afford it, so I'm wondering is it really THAT bad? The guy says it's about 6 years old and has just been sitting unplayed, which I guess means it probably won't be very well set up? Assuming there are no obvious cracks/splits, none of the strings buzz, the tailpiece isn't broken or jammed, the fingerboard is ebony, and there are no obvious neck repairs... is it worth around £300?
I doubt the board is ebony, but if the thing is structurally sound it's worth £300, certainly you'd have no problem shifting it again for that price if you wanted to. If your budget is £500 I would recommend spending the rest on a good set of strings and perhaps a professional set-up if it's never had one (which it probably hasn't). It's quite an old ad though, it might've gone already.
 20. But if we were all studious musical experts, most of us would be unfulfilled and suicidal, surely? It's like the business with all A-Level students rocking the results and the Unis not being big enough to sell them all degrees - ultimately for most people it would make more sense to just follow a different route.
 21. If you're asking whether we think it's important to display the Fender badge - the last half a dozen gigs I've done have been on a pretty much stock Squier Jazz. I've left my '91 Warwick Thumb at home, although I did use that when we were in the studio.
 22. Fair enough. If you can get it all pre-set on a pedal then do, would be my advice. I had a similar story the other day where I switched from picking my DB to bowing it and drowned everybody out.
 23. FWIW we've mostly used a guy called Jason Coates over the past few years: http://www.graphic-design-scotland.co.uk/ Always been happy with the stuff he produces.
 24. When I switch to pick I used to just roll my tone knob up, but lately I've been turning on a fairly squishy compressor pedal, and sometimes a very light overdrive after it.
 25.
The 3Leaf is basically all the real bass friendly bits of the Meatball stripped out and put in an easy to use pedal, with what sounds to me like much better tracking on the low end.
But missing the expression input. Whoops. Oh well, get yet another filter for that, then...
I had a play on a Meatwad, which I guess is the mid point between the Meatball and the Groove Regulator, but really struggled to get a nice sound from it.
I had one for a few years and never struggled to get a great sound out of it. It's much more flexible than the 3Leaf pedal and you have to actually understand what the controls do.
