FWIW I've got an old Thumb bass on the stand behind me but the last four gigs I've played I took a Squier Jazz. Nobody batted an eyelid, nobody suggested there was anything wrong with the sound, I didn't struggle to play it, it did the job. But I have had to replace the bridge, machines and pots because the stock ones were just garbage.

Third finger usually. I use my third finger as a middle finger because my middle finger is too long for playing the lowest strings comfortably, so I use my third finger instead. I do still use the middle finger but not as much as the third one.
-
If there's enough saddle adjustment on the bridge to keep the string length the same with the bridge 1/2" further forward then no, it won't matter. Maybe he's right.
Rasta for me the best JTQ album in "in the hand of the Inevitable" very soulful....
For me it's "Party To The Bus Stop" which they released under the name New Jersey Kings.
Did they have an excuse, or could they just not be arsed to turn up on time?
Van problems apparently. Actually they were more like 2 hours late.

I had a bit of a harmony vocal nightmare last night - headline band turned up an hour and a half late for the sound check so our check wasn't long enough, end result there was no me in my monitor although apparently my mic was really loud out front. I could hear a bit of our front man from HIS monitor and a lot of our trombonist for some strange reason although he was on the opposite side of the stage to me. Imagine trying to pitch your harmonies with only a trombonist with lazy intonation for reference... I also didn't notice the -2 Oct knob on my OC-2 was nearly all the way up (it's usually completely off) so when I kicked it on for a dubby-sounding intro it was pure insanity. Bizarrely I got loads of compliments for it though!

Yeah I use it to tune my double bass, works a treat.
For a reference point on where I want to be tonally as an end, my dream bass is a Warwick Dolphin. So basically what I'm asking you to do is tell me which bass will sound the most like a true Warwick. But at the same time, that's not what I want you to do because I know that only a Warwick can sound like a Warwick. I want something that will give me that sort of "felt, not heard" sound that Stefan Lessard has.
Stefan Lessard gets that purring sound from the back pickup and his picking hand. And his playing is quite understated most of the time, so a bit of taste and discipline are important factors in his sound. Go out and try the basses in your price range and see what works for you. You won't necessarily need an expensive bass to get something approaching his sound.
It was the nineties so we were recording to ananlogue tape, we had a really good engineer so we tracked the songs all together, puched in the mistakes then did a few overdubs.
Amateurs. I've never had to punch in the mistakes later. -
oh and to help you decide, i should add... i wouldnt recomend a NYC silver big muff, too wishy washy, whereas the russian big muff is a lot more defined, i like the sound but i dont use fuzz whatsoever anymore. I would like to try a bass big muff though to see if it lives up to all the hype
I think the silver NYC Muff sounds ace on bass personally, but it will get swamped by distorted guitars - you need to be the only musician who's using fuzz and/or have plenty of volume to make it work, but yeah, it's a great! sound on bass IMO. More practically: I loved my old Pickle Pie B, I think it's the best-sounding and most versatile bass-friendly Muff I've heard, it was also very pretty and well constructed. Heinously pricey though compared to an EHX production line model.
Is the WM boxed etc.? Is it the newer version with DC power socket? Got any pics?
Hey. No box, does have a 9v centre -ive socket (I wasn't aware that this was a new thing?) it's the graphic with the yellow Mammoth not the orange caps. Will take photos tomorrow. -
Bump with some more outgoing stuff, I'm downsizing. All pedals have velcro hooks on the bottom. Misc: Stagg 4U ABS Rack: £30 collected from central York Still got a box for this so I could post it I suppose but it would probably be expensive. *SOLD* Gator Large Pedal Tote + G-BUS 8 PSU: £50 *SOLD* collection only from central York Too big to post, this is a big board. PSU is nice and quiet and mounts underneath the board. Has 8 x 9v outputs and also a couple of 18v outputs. *SOLD* Boss LMB-3 Limiter/Enhancer: £35 posted *SOLD* *SOLD* EHX Micro POG: £75 posted *SOLD* + box and PSU, only had it a little while but it's not for me *SOLD* Robot Factory Meatwad: £165 posted *SOLD* This was my main filter for the longest time but my Octavius Squeezer is doing most of that work now. It does LP, BP and HP outputs, has an FX loop, exp. pedal input, I've also got a couple of little mods on it one of which gives more range through the expression sweep than on the standard unit. This sounds and plays ace. *SOLD* EHX Bass Micro Synth: £90 posted *SOLD* (old style, better-sounding one!). With box and PSU, it's also been true-bypass modded. I love the sound of this thing but I don't have a gig for it any more so it must go. *SOLD* EHX Bassballs: £30 posted *SOLD* Envelope-following formant filter, pretty nutsy Cheers.
The biggest problem with playing bebop is not in playing that fast but in THINKING that fast.
Yeah that's exactly the impression I got.
It takes practice, nothing more and nothing less
Well I'm working through some practice material now - thanks everybody - and wow what a lot I have to learn. Last night I really got a good overview of how much I don't know and it was pretty terrifying!

I don't know if you can do it by capacity. Theatres have relatively low capacity but are usually quite big venues. Most places I play have about 100-200 capacity (which we never, ever fill!) and I'd say they're small venues, so I don't know what a "medium" one is.

Couldn't be happier with mine, easy to use, super loud, super cheap, no reliability issues I've been gigging it for a year.

Can We Have a Glasto Bass Spotters Thread?

What's that bass that Nate Watts is holding? It looks like a 52" inch neck or something. Or it might just be the ugly giant headstock that makes it look so overgrown. -
Help - need advice on sore fingers!
thisnameistaken replied to Belinda's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Yeah best thing to do is make sure your amp is loud, then, so you'll pick softer. Can't guarantee it won't hurt at first though. BTW (as was recommended to me only a short while ago) you really shouldn't be picking an upright the same way you pick bass guitar. You should be using the side of your fingers really, with your hand more parallel with the strings than perpendicular. Hold your hand like you're auditioning for a zombie movie, then butt it up to the side of the fingerboard and you should have it just right! -

I can't really imagine what your fingertips are doing, I've never had that. Is your gig tomorrow a bass guitar gig? If you're picking over the end of the neck the lower tension will be easier on your fingers and if give yourself plenty of headroom on the amp you shouldn't have to pick hard. Apart from that I don't think I have any advice for you. Oh, and don't do any washing up today, or anything similar. -

Cracks?!? Blisters I've heard of but cracks? How hard are your callouses? I think short of filing down some of the excess hard skin you've got on your fingers and hoping the tender bits underneath heal quickly, maybe the best thing to do is to play the gig with a pick on bass guitar. -

Just pick one. It doesn't mean you have to stop playing the other one. -
Flippin heck. They are dropping like flies recently. We always play you really got me and all day of the night and they always go down a storm in the 2nd set.
Me and our guitarist often end up jamming on Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Dedicated Follower..., All Of My Friends... etc. when we should be working on our own songs. There are so many great tunes in their catalogue, and I love his little double-time runs he stuck in on the bass.
-
I'll give it a go. I need to do something because I'm struggling to even keep time with a lot of this bop stuff at the moment let alone follow the changes. I love the sound but I can't help wondering how much coke they had to put away to play it.

Sorry I wasn't flatly refusing to listen to jazz, I just need to read it too. When the chords are going by two to the bar it's just one long WTF to me, even if I've got them written infront of me... Too long spent playing reggae I reckon.
