I'm now GAS-free - MarkBass, Schroeder and Sansamp
thisnameistaken replied to Muzz's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm well tempted to go Markbass + Schroeder 1212L. Apparently they sound middy as owt and I love mids.
It's not as extreme as all that. I use a pretty bassy sound and I'm happy with the sound I get from my 1212L. It won't overpower a room with low frequencies (all too easily done with some larger cabs, sure), which I'm happy about to be honest, but it doesn't sound like a mid hump either. -
Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
thisnameistaken replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
This shouldn't be allowed. Except for bassists who are allergic to strings - they should be allowed to wear gloves that keep the strings off them. But otherwise, no. This is bad and someone should put a stop to it before it catches on. -
With 8 tens on stage doesn't it get a bit... well, loud? I don't see the point in having a lot of volume at the back of the stage, it just swamps the stage in noise and makes it impossible to hear vocal monitors etc.

Haha get in.
Stick with it, well worth the effort.
+1. I'm trying to learn how to bow at the moment, I've found it's a great test of the patience of my neighbours.

If I want rosewood + blocks on a Fender Jazz f/board...
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Bass Guitars
This is actually true. The high resonant frequency of the stiff pearloid brings out high harmonic overtones more clearly. But binding helps to transmit more of the neck resonance at the headstock down to the heel and into the body of guitar, giving a richer mid-range with more 'growl' and 'grind' - you wouldn't want to miss out on that!
Wow can't wait. I was hoping for a "piano-like" sound at first but I've now heard you only get that if your bass is made in a shed by a geezer with long hair and a dirty sweatshirt. -
Yeah I used to do this all the time when I was young and skint(er). Often found they broke shortly afterwards but to be fair I used to break strings a lot when I was a nipper, probably because my amp was cheap and rubbish so I picked too hard.
Or even get a Jazz you really like and sod the blocks. It's only decoration, after all
I reckon if the species of facing wood on a bass supposedly changes the sound, or a maple fretboard sounds different to a rosewood fretboard, then block inlays definitely make a difference and I'm doing it for the tone. -
Ask the band what the chords are, work out what intervals make up those chords, see if you can come up with a bass part using those intervals + any passing notes you think work well leading from one chord to the next. Next time you look at a bass tab or learn a song by ear from a record, try to figure out what the chords are (or look at a guitar tab) and - again - see if you can see why the bass player is playing the notes he/she's playing and how they relate to the chords. This will help you create appropriate bass parts of your own.

I would like to try a 1515L. I love my 1212L but curiosity has got the better of me and I can't help thinking the 1515 could be even better... -
IMO it depends on the quality of the bass. I wouldn't pay that amount without playing it, but I do think the assorted extras add value (assuming I liked the strings, otherwise they'd just need replacing anyway!)
I don't think the jag neck is bound
I could probably live with that. Actually why am I thinking of buying two basses just for a blocked board? Stupid, stupid... I should just buy any old Jazz and get some dude to put blocks on it for me. -
New Hartke LH500 or used Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0
thisnameistaken replied to Conan's topic in Amps and Cabs
FWIW I've been gigging an LH500 for about a year, never had an issue with it, the 3-band tone stack is actually really nice, amp is noise-free and loud, absolutely no complaints from me. They are a real bargain. -

Yeah I had thought about putting a Jag neck on a Jazz too but I've never tried a Jag, are the necks the same profile? -
But yeah, you could always try one, and if you like the feel of it, just pull out the electronics in favour of a passive setup!
Unfortunately it's got four controls and the jack socket in the side though, so I'd end up with a plugged hole somewhere.
How about this...? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=Fender+Jazz
I think that's really pretty and it's the sort of thing I would be looking at but I don't think I'd buy another Fender without trying it first, the quality has always been very variable IME. -

Cheers, hadn't seen those. Shame about the circuitry I was thinking passive, but I might see if I can find one and see how they sound, you never know. Bit pricey though at £1200+, for a Fender... -
f*** yeah, I should have known it was Fibbers! No surprise to find others nodding along to that one.
Unfortunately it seems this guy is firmly entrenched at Fibbers and Stereo, leaving practically nowhere else for local bands to play (Basement - pointless, Duchess - too big). Hopefully when the new owners re-fit it they'll still put local bands on but get rid of him.
When are you on? I'll wander down.
Would rather not say - don't want to associate my band with my rant about this geezer and make things worse. -
JV Basses, are they really worth it?
thisnameistaken replied to KevinJazzBass's topic in General Discussion
IME no they're not worth paying over the odds for. There are better Japanese 'Fenders' from that period. If you try it and you think it's worth the money then buy it, but that's Fender money, not Squier money. It probably won't appreciate in value in the same way that old Fenders do. -
I'd love to know which venue this is. We do have some in York where the sound is mud most nights of the week.
Fibbers. The same guy also does sound at Stereo. One silver lining is that Fibbers has been bought recently and is going to be redeveloped through August, the downside is that I think they'll be focussing on club nights instead of live bands in future.
But as for your OP, my thoughts are either you do the gig and it's awful or you don't play the show. If everyone sounds terrible there at least the audience will be sympathetic to you. If the soundguy is linked to the venue, you are going to have to bite the bullet with this one if you are to play there.
The band we're opening for should bring in a crowd that will like our stuff and maybe haven't heard us before, so it seems like a good date to play on the face of it, it's just such a shame that we are almost guaranteed to sound like sh*t. -
Depressing sound guy situation
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in General Discussion
I think he's a part owner of the venue - that's apparently the situation at the other venue where we endured him last time. So I don't think telling him to get a mix we like and leave the effing desk alone would go down very well in this case. I did speak to the "promoter" (I am getting tired of using that name for people who don't do any promoting) about it last night but he confirmed this guy will be doing the sound for us. The last time we had him he managed to piss off our guitarist before we'd even started soundchecking (can't remember what he said to him) and also ranted at us about how drummers shouldn't be allowed to sing because it's too noisy to mic them (but you can put dynamic mics at the front of the stage with all the backline pointing at them and that's not a problem? Dickhead). -
Well we've got a gig next month that I should be looking forward to, but I found out we'll have the sound guy who we had at a different venue recently who spent half of our set ****ing up our monitor mixes and the other half ordering/eating takeaway pizza. I saw him do sound for four bands last night and only the first band on sounded like anything other than mud. One band I could hear the snare and nothing else, another had one good guitar sound and apparently no bass player (don't know what that joker with the bass guitar was doing on stage tbh!), another band I don't think he'd even turned the backing mics on and when I looked around to see if he was fixing it he wasn't even there. Even the 3-piece had a practically inaudible bass player, all rumble and nothing else, he was reduced to a harmonic sitting underneath the guitar sound, or a tuning quirk of the bass drum. I'm thinking about just not turning up, I won't be missed.

My guitarist's got a JV strat (but his Squier logo has been scruffily removed) and I really don't like it. The neck is like a baseball bat. Nowhere near the quality of some of the '80s Tokai strats I've played. I don't buy into the hype with these.
