Bass perfection for me is currently in the shape of a £190 second hand Squier CV precision bass. Absolutely lovely thing.
FWIW I've been gigging a Squier Jazz recently and I had no complaints about it whatsoever. Yesterday we went into the studio to record four tunes and I tracked everything with the Squier, then the engineer noticed I'd also brought my Thumb bass and insisted that I re-record everything with that. "Fair enough" I thought and did what I was told. When we were tracking the brass parts today I heard the rhythm tracks properly for the first time and the contribution of the Warwick over the Squier was very obvious. There was one beat in one song where just the bass guitar is heard and it was just killer tone. So I'm now convinced that the extra quids are worth it, at least if you're recording. Live is different and I could probably continue to live with the Squier to be honest!

Electro Hamonix Bass Micro Synth sample settings page
Not got the luxury of trying to be honest mate, I'd imagine that it sounds interesting though, even though I've always dismissed the bassballs as a weak and relatively pointless filter, maybe I'm wrong?
I literally only ever turn mine on because I've turned my BMS on, but yeah if you give it a complex enough signal it can burp and snarl in really gnarly ways. People tend to use it as a 'typical' envelope filter and it doesn't really do that very well, but it's a good filter. -
is there nothing bootsy cant do
ok maybe he cant do instruction vids hahaha
Best one I've ever seen TBH. He's saying funk is taste, and it is. Listen to a lot of funk and you'll play funk well. -
And The Award For Best Bass Goes To

My Jazz sounds good, doesn't sound like my Warwick though. Make your Jazz sound like my Warwick and I'll crown it Bass Of The Whatever. -

Try firing it through a Bassballs, it's like Larry Graham singing! -

Nice. There's a lot of cool sounds in the BMS, it's a really great pedal. -
how much does a decent bass cost?
thisnameistaken replied to FunkyFinger's topic in General Discussion
If you watch the used market you should be able to pick up any quality factory-built bass for £700 or less. I don't think I've ever spent more than that on a bass and I've had some really nice ones. But as OTPJ said, it depends on your tastes. Some people have expensive tastes, I don't. Which is fortunate because I'm always skint. -
How can I get then tone from this tune???
thisnameistaken replied to mr.sibs's topic in General Discussion
Yeah the OC-2 just sounds lush and they're so cheap, well worth keeping one handy. I've often thought about having two Micro Synths - just snapping all the sliders off one, sticking it on my favourite setting and gluing it to the bottom of another Micro Synth to save space. -
level 42 people...how to get the sound...
thisnameistaken replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like just a band-pass filter to me, peaked somewhere in the high mids. -

thisnameistaken replied to mr.sibs's topic in General Discussion
Boss OC-2 + a low-pass envelope filter (or maybe a Bassballs actually). A Bass Micro Synth might get you somewhere near (the filter controls would be good to have) but the OC-2 will give you that square-wavey tone to begin with. -
or is it just that i have absolutely no respect for the poster of the link ...
I am devastated.
That's rather hattist, I must say.
When the geezer is arguing Marcus Miller's sound I think it's relevant. If he was actually Jimmy Cliff then maybe it would be unfair.
Sorry mate, but you're coming on as the 'pork pie twat'.
And you're a thick c***. Sorry is name-calling only allowed as part of a pun?
AAhhh go on admit it ......you've been drinking aintya? ha ha ha ha!!!! (barbeque trays on lino?theme fom duck tales? pork pie hat) all very funny stuff and especially all the "Bites" you're getting. ever go fishing? you're a natural!
It's easy because it's true.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
I'm fairly sure both your examples were in the late '90s.

Very cool player, manages to stay very melodic and human but still grooves hard. I can't think of anyone else who sounds like him.
wish my sh*t sounded that good
Oh come on there's way too much compression on the bass, his pops sound like disposable barbeque trays landing on lino.
'Never too Much','Walk the Dinosaur' to name just two.
I didn't know it was Marcus Miller on those tunes. The bass on Never Too Much sounds like sh*t, and the bass part on Walk The Dinosaur is a bit like the theme from Duck Tales but not as good. Neither tune is ever held up as a great example of slap bass, and both are easily dated to the '80s. So my previous points stand: Marcus Miller's tone is definitive only for Marcus Miller fans, and it is indeed "That '80s sound".
Yes that is a pork pie hat.
I thought so.
Pop stuff that you may have heard of includes..... Luther Vandross, Scritti Politi,Was(not Was),Simple Minds,Frank Sinatra, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston,Joan Armatrading......
So which song did he slap on that everybody knows?
Just a few there-not including all the jazz work and countless jingles.
See above. Incidentally is that a pork pie hat in your avatar?
You're really unfamiliar with his discography aren't you?
Go on, amaze me. Or just leave it at the vague suggestion that he's had a pop career and hope I don't look it up.
Err...you haven't really endeared yourself to Entwistle fans there.
Are they renowned for being mercilessly violent? I'm just being honest. I quite like the old Who stuff but he sounded terrible on the later stuff.
-
I think the same about your opinion in this case. Marcus' tone is the definitive slap tone- full range with a fat low end and crisp, clean highs.
Weak low end, constant crash cymbal highs, and no mids. Why did you describe that as "Full range"? And it can't be the definitive slap tone unless it's been used on records that people have heard. I hate listening to his bass, he sounds nearly as bad as John Entwistle to me. That's "rich John Entwistle" - he sounded good until he could afford to ruin his sound in extreme ways.

Advice on hand held MP3/other recorder for band practices
thisnameistaken replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
- able to deal with very loud rehearsals! - good on-the-spot playback capabilities (thus needs in-built speaker) to check the recording is of an acceptable standard
Hmm. Yeah. These are the difficult bits. Get something with at least one input, take at least one quality mic, route it through your mixer if it needs phantom power, then out to your recorder. Similarly - route the recorder's output into a mixer channel to listen to the playback. Tiny little mics and tiny little speakers are no use. FWIW we use an old Boss digital multi, it's not hand-held but it runs on 9v so we just plug it into a pedal daisy chain. I think our guitarist paid £70 for it. -
Sorry mate, have to disagree. Marcus has the best slap sound on the planet. No ear-splitting treble there...but saying that, my treble hearing has gone.
Well far be it from me to explain to you why your opinion in this case is a load of knackers, then!
-
Fair point.
Well, more to the point there were other more palatable slap sounds - Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Norwood Fisher, etc. Less of the ear-splitting treble content that Marcus likes to injure his listeners with.
-
Who would you say has the 'Noughties' sound?
I can't think of a single hit record from the last ten years that has a slap bass part. So "nobody".
