1. Does the unit you're going to mount have ventilation on the top or bottom? If not, you don't need to leave a gap in your rack case for it. Most rackable gear ventilates front to back because if it didn't it would be 'king stupid. Edit: The Ampeg will be fine. The Markbass head isn't a full rack width so, again, it should be fine with the vents on the sides. Leaving a gap above or below wouldn't help anyway - there's no ventilation there.
 2.
Marcus's sound - the benchmark of an awesome slap tone?
If you like that '80s sound.
 3. Anyone got the Gomez return call where he says "Shut up bitch and pick up my bass, I've got a gig to get to"?
 4.
...and she has great hair!
The rest of her is pretty easy on the eye to be fair.
 5.
Having said that,I'd rather do that -amongst other things,of course-than an office job.
Each to their own. I'm pretty tired of my current job right now but that's taken 10 years. I think 10 years of wedding bands would've driven me batty much quicker. I do respect people who make a living from playing though. I'm not jealous of some of the gigs they have to do, but I admire the commitment and even just the bravery to try to make it work. I never had world-beating chops so I didn't think I'd stand a chance, so I stuck to doing bands.
 6.
Is it actually realistic to earn a sucure income from playing gigs
"... yer bedda slur, da mustang da!" Worst-case scenario: Every weekend, for the rest of your miserable life.
 7. Yeah me and the missus saw them in Feb on the label tour, Random Hand headlined and got away with it through sheer volume and force of will, but The Skints set was what most people had turned up for I think.
 8.
This is probably going to get me flamed into submission, but it strikes me in general that there are 2 kinds of bassist. Bassists who play bass and only kind of dabble in a bit of guitar/keys/drums or whatever (people who are exclusively bassists if you like) and also people who can play any instrument they turn their hands to and bass is one of those. The multi players seems to sing without too much hassle, but the bass exclusivists have a lot of trouble singing and playing.
I don't fit into that at all. I basically only play bass, rarely even pick up a guitar never mind anything else, and I've always sung in some capacity in all the bands I've ever done. In fact I'd probably get bored if I wasn't singing too, I enjoy the singing as much as the bass playing.
 9.
playing at the Ivy on Friday with The Skints
Nice one, they're a brilliant band, had their album on in the car today. They don't get up north often enough though.
 10. I think it was "Money" by Pink Floyd. I don't even like Pink Floyd tbh, but the bass part is really easy to hear and has lots of notes in.
 11. I think the cheapest is the EHX Q-Balls, £100 from GAK but then you'll still want an expression pedal.
 12.
Oh well... I'll keep you all posted if I hear of a clearance sale going on.
Closing Down Sale! All Stock Nearly Fair Price!
 13.
I don't know which is worse:

accidentally changing the way an instrument sounds through human/mechanical error; or
deliberately changing the way an instrument sounds because it'll look "better"

Hehe. Call me a mug but I've got a soft spot for old Mosrites. I've never played one and I don't care if they play like arse and sound worse, I still want one.
 14.
If you want something a bit different, check out this baby: http://www.sourceaudio.net/products/soundb..._distortion.php
Yeah I have to agree that thing looks incredible.
 15. He just slides up and plays two notes, can't imagine anything consisting of two notes giving you much grief.
 16.
Bridge pickup only on fretless side? No thanks. Not everyone wants to be Jaco when the play fretless.
Yeah the pickup config looks fecking stupid to me. Even if I only wanted a bridge pup I doubt I'd want it that close to the bridge, especially not for the weediest strings on my bass.
 17.
Not soul,,, however ,,,we used to do a stripped out acoustic version of "message in a bottle" which used to go a storm..
When I was little I thought The Police were German, mostly because of "Anozer lonely day...". Maybe the blonde hair had something to do with it too.
 18. I can't remember if there's any drop in level when you switch an FX-25 on, but I've had a couple of them in the past. I wasn't that keen to be honest. The envelope follower seems a bit "binary", I mean it seems to take a high level to open the filter and when it closes it closes quickly, so it's hard to play it in a subtle way or get a smooth response from it. Also towards the end of the down-sweep it always seems to pass through a very wolfy little frequency hump, so you get this loud "WHOMP!" on the way down if you sustain a note. But some people love them. That's the thing with filters, you've just got to try them and see what works for you. Edit: Incidentally the FX-25 is a band-pass filter, so yes while it's plenty bassy with the filter at the bottom, when it sweeps up it will (should, anyway) cut bass frequencies. To be honest though with many low-pass filters players prefer a high resonant peak near the cut-off, which will be much louder than the bass frequencies when the filter sweeps open and so the effect is probably much the same in the end. So it was a waste of time me typing that... Heh.
 19. I did a gig last week with a guy who was using a Terror head and a miked Orange 1x12 cab, it sounded really good.
 20. His shadow on the ground could be a '70s porn star.
 21. Not seeing anything about what it sounds like, or any samples?
 22.
What I'm actually after it what kind of elements make up that sound. Is this a typical TRB sound? It sounds really tight in the low notes, and I realise the studio probably helped a little, but I've never managed to get such a nice tone (having played 4 years I still don't know how to make a great tone).
That's partly picking technique, partly EQ and I would gamble quite a lot of compression. You could get that sound out of any bass with a bridge pup IMO, finger-picking somewhere around the front pup, but you would need to roll off the treble on the EQ and then compress it quite aggressively. FWIW Warwicks lean towards that kind of sound. But they're certainly not the only basses that can sound like that.
 23. Don't museum that Mu-Tron man, get it on your board!
 24. TBH I don't think Stingrays make good fretless basses. Too prone to dead spots, which are more problematic on fretless. Pretty much anything else would be nice, ebony fingerboard if you can get one, and preferably a bridge pickup too.
 25.
What is strange is how some people here seem to really resent this, seeing it as a gratuitous display of musicianship and showmanship (which of course it is) and therefore conclusive evidence that anyone who is better than them is in fact rubbish and deserving of all the scorn their bitter little hearts can manage!
What I find strange is when people confuse disdain for resentment and scorn. When I see Peter Stringfellow on TV I'm not jealous of him, I really do honestly just think he looks like a twat. At least Nigel Tufnel bowing a guitar with a violin was funny.
