1.
Thanks guys. Sansamp DI didn't really work for me, seemed to expand the tone a little but couldn't get the sound I was really after.
The SansAmp has a big mid cut going on, which is probably why it sounds a bit lifeless with your fretless. The VT Bass has a mid scoop too with all the knobs flat, but you can boost it back to flat with a little tweak apparently. I'm interested in seeing where this thread goes because I like an old-school soul sound but have never found a decent vintage sound from a SansAmp (I've had three and sold them all). One recommendation I never tried is the Barber Linden EQ, which is supposedly a B-15 tone stack in a stomp box.

 3. I think either rig will be plenty loud and nicely portable. Pick whichever. In terms of where you put it: I've got a 1212L and I just stick it on the floor, but on its side. Because one of the speakers is angled inside the cab, putting the cab on its side means it's angled up like a monitor. Works for me. With the newer design maybe it'd work better standing on something, I don't know. I don't suppose you'd need any specialist "speaker stand" gear really though, just stick it on a table or a crate or whatever. What might be more important (again I don't know because I haven't done it) is that I've heard reports you lose bottom end when you lift a speaker cab off the floor. This might be important with a cab like the Schroeder 1212s, given that they're quite compact and (according to some, I've not noticed) lacking in the deep bass dept. TBH I've always felt if you need bass deeper than these cabs offer then you're going to have to sacrifice pitch definition. In a dub or drum n' bass outfit that's probably important, but anywhere else I doubt it is.

 5.
+1
+more. Top tale.
and heres a couple of photos from said gig... whats wrong?
You look too clean. Probably partly to do with the venue which is also too clean, and you all being very young which makes you look clean. I think you'd need to make an extra special effort to look dirty to offset your youth, and practically roll in dogshit before performing at a place like that. Looked at your myspace and there are photos from other shows on there where you look a lot less clean, and it's a better look IMO.
 6.
wireless is wonderfull
While I think wireless is a great idea from a safety standpoint (and of course safety is important), I would be too embarrassed to use a wireless system in a pub / small venue. I'd feel like one of those middle-aged rockers who takes a rack of 6 perfectly preserved expensive guitars to play an hour of '60s covers at the Dog n' Duck.
 7. TBH I don't trust those muting plugs. I wouldn't provide opportunities for silencing your bass to a tiny little spring thingy if I were you.
 8. If you've got someone to help you load in/out then any quality 410. If you'll be humping it around on your own, look at some of the modern light 212s. I like the Hartke HA3500, I've got one I keep as a backup head (I've got a HA2500 too that I use at home). Plenty of clean power, sounds good with the EQ flat, reliable, no grumbles from me.
 9.
You are absolutely right I have looked at both - the frustrating thing is I can't organise the logistics of picking either of the cabs up! (a combination of distance and size).
East Midlands to Stansted? Get a train and a taxi. It's a surprisingly light cab, you can carry it 100 yards without feeling it too much.

 11. I take it your budget is for a cab and a head, not just a cab? When you say portable, do you mean light? One-man lift and carry? Or are you short of boot space and want something compact? I'm just thinking if it's the former but not the latter, you could bundle two 8ohm 210s together to get the 410 effect but in more spine-friendly boxes. Unfortunately if you want serious volume from a single light and compact cab you're looking at pushing your budget a bit. Schroeder 1212s appear on here now and then for £4-450 used and they are amazing little boxes, but it wouldn't leave you much change for a head. For a cheap(-er) amp with lots of grunt the Hartke LH500 and Warwick ProFet 5.2 are worth looking at, both 500w into 4ohms, easily enough power for anything you're likely to get up to and a good match for a single 4ohm 212 or a pair of cheaper 210s.
 12. I remember those but not fondly, sorry. I doubt it's got any collectable value unless you got it signed by Jesus.

 14.
Buying new gear always makes me super excited to play!
TBH new gear always means I spend more time tossing about with the new gear than I do playing. Sometimes it's necessary (bigger/better amp, new effects, etc.) but new gear is usually a huge distraction for me and I try to avoid changing gear unless I have a good reason for it. If I wasn't doing a band I'd be busy writing music and looking for a band to play it. I don't really get this playing bass in isolation thing that some people seem to like.
 15. Pickle Pie 'B', Octavius Squeezer and Robot Factory Meatwad are the only ones I've had with yellow LEDs.
 16. I think they're a bit of a gimmick and they'll go away quite soon. Bass bodies just look far too long like that. I doubt there's any appreciable tonal benefit. File under through-body stringing, species of wood top and 35" scale.
 17.
Two incredible and venerable musicians playing music that they love? That video is immense, I'm getting major doses of bass player envy from this thread.
I often find the "You're just jealous" riposte a bit simple, but in this case it's hilarious. That performance is literally one of the s*****t things I've ever seen.
 18. Is this Jon Venables?
 19. Yeah they look interesting, prices look good too. Thanks for the link.
 20.
I have always liked slap grooves but very few people can do it...
... as well as they think they can do it.
 21. I've got 760FLs on a Squier Jazz and it sounds the dog's. Enjoy.
 22. Don't go telling everybody how good they are, the used prices will go back up.
 23. Nah I was one of the sneering shoppers. The only player's slap sound I like is Larry Graham's, everyone else sounds like a dustbin full of cutlery rolling down an escalator.
 24.
Checked the tab book last night.Effect is listed as a phaser??!!??
That's one mystery solved then. When was a tab book ever wrong?
 25. Mine is one of these. I only need to rack a 2U head (been meaning to add a preamp but decided I really don't need one) so I'd be happy to swap if anyone needs a 4U. Mine's in good nick, all catches work, no damage that I've ever seen anywhere. Would prefer to do a local exchange rather than shipping.
