whats basschats members fave pickup/preamp combination
thisnameistaken replied to 4 candles's topic in General Discussion
What does your ultimate sound sound like?
I bet it's warm and growly and sparkly and stuff. I haven't tried that many pickups because it seems I'm not as good as telling what's so sh*t about my current pickups as the rest of you. Or maybe I just got lucky and bought basses that came with perfectly acceptable pickups - assuming they exist but only get sold to people who aren't on Basschat. -
If you are using a bypass switch, you can put all of your effects in the loop so that when you turn it off,the pedals are removed from the signal chain,so you are effectively running through just one pedal.
That was exactly my point, it may cause problems.
From the photo it looks like this looper is well built and it costs for a very reasonable amout of money. If you need one it might be worth considering it.
Bear in mind if you bypass all your pedals with a passive switch like that, you may find you still get tone suck as your signal degrades along the cables to/from your pedals and amp. It might be an idea to keep one active pedal in your signal chain just to push things along - some tone shaper maybe, outboard preamp, anything with a quality buffer in it would do.
Do they come out with the logo embossed on?
We once found an ad on eBay for '5 Business Work Shits' and spent a drunken evening emailing questions to the seller. He stuck them all on his listing too, he was a good sport.
Simple command-line LAME works fine with default settings for me: http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php . Save the following as ConvertWAVtoMP3.vbs: ... change the "converter" line to the right path to the Lame exe. Then create a shortcut to the VBS in your C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\SendTo folder and you can activate a context menu Send To item on any WAV file in Windows explorer.
Neat I like that. Thanks.

Yeah the Corvette looks lovely, that singlecut Thumb though? What weren't they smoking!

I'm trying to upload candidate mixes for my band to listen to but I can't find a decent wav->mp3 converter. I've been using Winamp's diskwriter plugin with the lame codec but the best bitrate it can produce is 56kbps, there are really obvious file compression artifacts over everything. Any better options for cheap / free?

Fun song recommendations for the bass
thisnameistaken replied to dostoyevsky's topic in General Discussion
Still maybe my favourite bass line ever: -
Nice. I never liked the '80s look of the 'ray 5, these are much better. I don't get on with the necks though, oh well. At least I can look at other people using them, and show them to my 'ray 5-using mate and point out how much nicer they are than his bass.
when did you last see a musicman that looked like a tele?
Could be a 22.5 Anniversary or something, with one of the thousands of "rare" paint jobs they do.

TBH I think a delay with its own feedback loop send/return would be pretty grand. Doubt you'll find one MXR-sized but it would be easy to get creative with something like that. I think I'd get bored of a one-trick noisemaker pretty quickly.

Dislike: Lottery winners dining table tops Translucent colour finishes (esp. turquoise / aqua / other such manky blue-green shades) Gold hardware (esp. when combined with the above) Figured maple (esp. when combined with the two above) Cheesy peace n' love (or satan n' death) fingerboard inlays Single-cutaway bodies Transparent pickguards Jerzy Drodz Wooden knobs, wooden pickup covers Fingerboard LEDs Maple fingerboards with block inlays Pointy headstocks, pointy anything Black basses (purely because of the grubby fingerprints that you never notice until someone photographs you) Like: Wood. Plain wood, not gaudy wood Chrome Pickguards Fingerboards with no inlays, fretless boards with no lines Rosewood boards with MoP blocks Bullet truss rod nuts
... it will come in the rock case ... illl put two locks on the lacthes and tell you the codes.
Don't do that. If customs see it they'll want to open it, and they will open it one way or another. Better to just leave it openable than force them to damage the case to get inside.

Like: Rosewood with MoP blocks. Dislike: Maple with black blocks.
Octabass sounds kind of like the OC2, but tracks bunches better lower down. Plus mine is for sale.
IME it doesn't track any better than the OC-2. And notes below low A are a bit pointless anyway. My OC-2 is one of the few pedals I'm proper happy with and haven't even thought of selling, I use it mostly with the -1 oct soloed for synthy reggae/dub -type stuff, or blended with other less-bass-friendly pedals to give them some bottom.
The only thing they do ask for proof of from time to time is the business mileage. I just show them the car's odometer. The last time I showed them my three year old Octavia with 142,000 miles on it, LOL!
Jebus Cripes that's a lot of driving. -
Heh! I know the feeling, Sarah. I'm just about to do another string order with Status for six four string sets and a couple of five string sets. I use the DR Fatbeams on my other basses and they're getting expensive - Two sets at a time comes to over £60 usually!
Given that you're a professional bassist can't you write those costs off as business expenses though? Or has the tax man told you your strings are too expensive and threatened an audit? They did that to me over (totally legitimate) telco costs last year. -
I used to know a guy who had an aluminium DB with strat knobs on it, thing looked amazing.

I don't know anything about the POD products, sorry.

Help!Squire Fretless advice and guitar synth
thisnameistaken replied to AhBootsybaby's topic in Bass Guitars
The Squier VMs are quite well-regarded around here. US Fenders aren't always worth what you pay for them. New strings if you haven't tried that already, a good set-up might help too if this is a new bass (most 'budget' guitars don't get a decent set-up until someone buys them and gives them some attention). -
Try getting a quote through Interparcel - I got a price of something like £70 to ship my (edit: Stingray!) in a hardcase to Spain last summer, courier was DPD, packing matls (cardboard, tonnes of bubblewrap) was another £10-15 IIRC. Or you could look at this sticky for more advice. If I were you, I'd insist on having the payment in my account before sending the bass. If you can't get insurance for it (some couriers won't insure musical instruments beyond a uselessly low amount) make sure the buyer is aware of that and is willing to take the risk. If you're packing inside a hard case that isn't moulded to support the full length of the neck, build up under the neck with folds of stiff cardboard to provide some support (bear in mind stuff may get stacked on top of your bass on a pallet). Wrap bubbles around everything, tape the bubbles so they don't move, tape any cardboard supports to the bubbles that are taped to the bass, etc. - put a bit of thought into the packing and you should be safe.
