Norwood from Fishbone teaches you...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcWW4indsY0 i'm sure to get a moan for not trimming the link but wtf , you will like..
TBH that's pretty sad. The band's not what it used to be, and that recording is awful. I've seen them a few times, even after Chris and Kendall left, and after Fish left, but the best set I ever saw them do was at Glastonbury with the original line-up. They were the best live band in the world at that time I think. Now they just look like they're going through the motions. -
He was playing with DH Peligro (ex-Chilis drummer)
More importantly: Ex- Dead Kennedys drummer! I just love Norwood, he's everything a bass player should be. And he can play bass too - bonus! -
If you can't be arsed to unload the van, how hard would it be to just take your guitar in with you? Load them in last, take them out first? I left a bass in a car boot all day once (because I had no choice), it was scorching hot and the bass was never the same again, the neck twisted. I try to keep them in sensible temperatures now.

Why does he need two tuners?

...nothing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdOQjFagf4w OK so 'Hang Loose' was a new one on me. He's still my bass hero, I don't care how stoned and awful-sounding he gets.

I decided I wasn't going to see them if they didn't have Jah Wobble, but my mate saw them in Sheffield and said it was the best gig he's ever seen. Now I feel like I'm missing out.

Thread just reminded me of a beat I haven't heard for ages...
Not just that but they also have a theremin with built in delay!!! http://www.hiwatt.com/data/HiwattFX.html
I keep meaning to get a Theremin, a Moog delay and a Moog ring mod as my "I'm pissed and I want to amuse myself" rig. It would make my girlfriend fairly psychopathic I think but hey, what are effects for?

The flat, angled part of the fingerboard under the E string
thisnameistaken replied to Ray's topic in EUB and Double Bass
It's kind of a throw back to the days of large gauge strings.
Don't modern basses have it? I don't think I've ever seen a bass that didn't have that big flat bit under the E. -
My mate reckons these are ace. He was thinking of putting one in his bass rig the last I heard.

Some good advice in here, thanks everybody. I'll try putting some of it into practice tonight. -
fretless bass- what wood would you choose?
Fingerboard material is very important as well, maple stains, rosewood can be eaten by roundwounds so I guess that leaves ebony, pau ferro or phenolic if you want to use rounds. If you prefer flats then rosewood should be fine.
Pau ferro's no better than rosewood for wear. Ebony holds up very well against roundwounds by comparison, feels a lot nicer to me, and sounds more... orchestral I suppose, my favourite. Can't comment on phenolic boards because I've never owned one, but they do sound good, very broad tone, plenty of brightness. -
Here's the first tune I've mixed for my current (main) band, first thing I've ever mixed actually, critical feedback very welcome it's a work-in-progress: http://teop.org/media/old_friends_mix1.mp3 Known issues: Drum mix isn't right. Drums were tracking to a digi multitrack during a different session and all I got was a stereo mix, would like to sort out that hi-hat but will need to re-record. Guitar sounds a bit dull. My rookie mistake recording it I think, and it didn't have new strings on. Vox a bit low in the mix - partly a result of the drum mix and that loud hi-hat I think, but I can probably improve on this with a bit of work. Bass a bit high - there was a LP filter on it but I switched it off before I bounced the track and I probably shouldn't have! So go on, tear me a new one. I need to learn this stuff. Edit: Oh and the drummer decided to do a stick-count through the vocal break, which I can't remove. Definitely need to re-record him. Is that reverb on the vocal a bit heavy-handed?

thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Recording
It's more a matter of getting the levels right from take to take, because there's no one take that doesn't have a big mistake in it. Unfortuantely I've got about 30 takes per tune to rummage through and find the good bits in... And probably re-arrange and generally make better. I'm not hugely concerned about quality, they're rough demos, but I do have to use the tracks from this session because everybody's going away for christmas now. I did some googling last night and everybody was saying normalisation is a mug's game, which is what worried me. Do those people just get perfect recordings out of everyone all the time? -
Recorded a bunch of tracks with my band yesterday, but on the brass parts the levels are all over the place and I'm going to have to patch a few takes together to get a good track. Is it bad to do some normalisation to get the levels right from take to take, or is there something else I should do instead? I've got whatever comes with Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 at my disposal, and no previous experience of mixing anything, but I do have plenty of trial n' error time available.

This is ridiculous seriously....
thisnameistaken replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in General Discussion
I thought it was... really good, actually! Rhythmically it was nuts, tonnes of imagination there. I wouldn't want to listen to him do it for a whole set, but that is some funky playing.
get that guy a drum kit
Werd. -
Mexican Fender road worn 60's Jazz bass
I'd say you'd probably be best off getting a standard Mexican 60s reissue jazz bass and saving yourself over £300.
I will tie it to the back of my car for a day for £100. How does that sound? -

I like him. He's a bit like Kim Deal except he plays a lot more notes and doesn't sound as good.

My old Godin Acoustibass fretless sounded more like a double bass than a fretless bass IMO, even with Rotos roundwounds on it. If you get a Godin A4 (the newer version, £749 new according to Google) stick flats on it and pick up by the fingerboard I reckon that's about as close as you'll get. Definitely go out and try one if you can find one near you. One issue with them though: They don't balance well on a strap at all, so if you've already got grumpy joints you'll probably want to play it sitting down.

I love that nukeburst on the Jazz-thing.
