Oh not again WARWICKS DO NOT WEIGH A TON!! GIDDIT??
My Thumb is 10lbs, which is nearly a ton.

I've never been interested in having a custom bass built. I prefer to see something that catches my eye, play it, like it, buy it. If I had a custom bass I'd probably regret a bunch of decisions I made when I ordered it, and feel too precious about it to sell it. Plus there's that whole stigma.
If you try a Thumb, try them with a strap.
Yeah it does sit weird, the top horn's not really long enough, your fretting hand naturally sits about two inches further up the neck. They balance fine though, probably because they weigh a ton.

I thought they'd finished with the invite-only thing? I've got 10 invites if anyone needs one. -
The Bassballs' bypass is fine (not sure if it's true-bypass), it doesn't suck tone. As to whether you can find a use for one, well, that's hard to answer. I use mine more like a modulation effect than an envelope filter - it's towards the end of my chain and I feed dirty signals through it so they get a bit gutteral and nasty. Funnily enough it works great with a Bass Micro Synth feeding into it. It achieves the effect by using a pair of narrow band-pass filters, so it will thin out your sound and rob some bass. If you're planning to use it during loud sections where everybody's going hell for leather then it won't work very well. I suppose it's a lot like using a phaser on bass, it works best when there's not much else going on that can swamp it.

Effect of string gauge on bass tone & overall sound ?
thisnameistaken replied to Nostromo's topic in General Discussion
I spent ages using Rotos 100-40 and thinking the D and G sounded weak, but I didn't like 105-45 either I thought the bass strings were too heavy. I've since switched to Ernie Ball 100-80-65-45 and I find the tonal balance across the set is much better, treble strings more useful, and they still feel like a set. But yeah there's always flats. The La Bellas I'm using on my Jazz are somewhere around 105-45 but they feel a lot stiffer than roundwounds and sound massive. -

Hahaha, you can really hear how bonkers his part is on this. -
I think there are moments in all of our songs where I look at the neck. It's usually just after I start playing out of tune.
It's not a fender, its not trying to sound like a fender and it doesn't really. What it does do is sound like a good warwick streamer. If I want to sound like James Jamerson I pick up the P bass.....
Similarly I've got an old Thumb bass, sounds great - just like a Thumb bass! But I've also got a Jazz strung with flats which I use for that thumpy old "trad" bass guitar noise when I need it. To the thread starter: If you're a Fender die-hard you might find Warwicks a bit strange in terms of ergonomics, but (for me anyway) that just takes a bit of getting used to. As for the sound, while it won't sound like a Fender you will like the sound. Whether you can use the sound is another matter, but you won't dislike it.

Will playing a fretless make me a better fretted player?
thisnameistaken replied to WonderHorse's topic in General Discussion
I played only fretless for a few years, and going back to fretted bass I was all "Ugh, what's with these huge metal things ba-dumping under my fingers all the time", but it did make my fretting hand technique a little better in terms of how accurate I was and actually moving for notes on other strings instead of just barring. But only for a short while - I soon got lazy again. -
Never thought i'd find a use for this photo, i'm mother superior (check the stockings-now that's scary!) who's fast asleep as usual Actually i have a big Halloween party with the same band this weekend...yay
Our trombone player is French too!

I have one gig where I use a lot of effects and they're pretty necessary - vanilla bass guitar just doesn't suit most of their material. I do another gig where I go straight into the amp. I don't mind lugging a pedal board around with me because my amp setup is really small and light. It does mean I've got two mains cables and two instrument cables to plug in, instead of one of each, but I somehow manage to find that extra 30 seconds of setup time from somewhere.
Really nice 'transition' Streamer bass; early enough to have the predominantly wenge neck but gets the 2 piece bridge.
First time I've seen one with the racing stripe laminates plus the two-piece bridge, this is pretty much my ideal Streamer. But... Skint!
do you mean generic as in the same style of music? cause thats what they do..
To me their first album sounds quite individual, but the second album (We The People) seemed like either latin or disco on every tune but without that character of the first album, really disappointed me. I stopped listening then so I can't comment on their later records, but they were going the way of Brand New Heavies I thought - from an interesting little funk outfit to a band that wanted mainstream success.
-
Groove Collective's first album was really good but after that I thought they got really generic. A bit 'Incognito' (I know there are a lot of Incognito fans here, sorry). I saw them in New York back in the '90s and tbh wasn't impressed. They were very tight and all but they seemed to have no energy, like they didn't even know eachother.

Anyone know if Warwick do the individual saddle pieces from the original Just-A-Nut, the little brass screw-in jobbies? Only I've just put a .065 D string on and it seems to be very tight in the slot (bit weird - had no issues with the .065 D that I've just taken off!), it made a lot of ratchety noise while tuning up, so I thought it would be nice to have a couple of sets for different string gauges.
Is it OK to like both? I like zingy rounds and flats. Unfortunately this means I really want two of each bass I play (fretted, fretless, short scale, semi).
I've got La Bella flats on my Jazz, Slinkies on my Warwick, it just seems wrong to put flats on a Warwick somehow...

f***ing christians... My girlfriend's a teacher at a faith school, been desperately trying to find a different job for 2 years now. Apparently their school chaplain (who seems quite fond of year 9 girls - guess the religion!) has decided to break the school's historical support for Amnesty International recently because of a position they took in support of an African woman who wanted to have an abortion. So now he's started printing out form letters and giving them to year 7s (11-year-olds) to sign and mail off in support of some more-appropriate "charity" that doesn't waste its time on things he considers immoral in his tiny little religion-addled mind. He doesn't appear to give a f*** that these kids have no idea what they're writing in opposition to, really, so long as there's lots of support. They can leave the understanding and moral judgement to him - after all, he's a minister. f***ing christians...

Completely Dissatisfied With My Music.
thisnameistaken replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in General Discussion
Go play for a band that are doing a type of sound you've never done before. Jam tribute band? I grew up on The Jam, love their stuff but FFS I'd be slitting my wrists. -

Nailing your colours to the mast

I'll have your DB if it's just taking up space. I haven't owned one for about 15 years now but I'm really tempted to get back into it. I'd need a bigger car though... -
99% of ads showing 'real people' use actors.
I was still disappointed when I found out "Hi I'm Barry Scott" wasn't even called Barry Scott. Why tell us he's Barry Scott when he isn't? It's just bizarre.

Edgar Meyer, Ray Brown and Victor Wooten
thisnameistaken replied to steviedee's topic in General Discussion
That snap from Wooten's G is really distracting during his solo. Cool stuff nonetheless.
