1. Few more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3OxhCmCQ6c http://vodpod.com/watch/1644900-de-la-soul...-ring-ha-ha-hey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1BKEYq3dEM
2. Sounds a bit like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cos9ExMIELU Which has been sampled and re-recorded to death.
3. I think if I was looking to replace my OC-2 the first pedal I'd try is the MXR 288. I think those EBS boxes are a bit overpriced for what you get, and I don't think of the Micro POG as an "octaver" really, I think of it as a digital harmoniser with very minimal options. It's very good at what it does, but too weedy-sounding to replace an analogue octaver.
4. Yeah I don't think you can get that tone without Jesus. I've been thinking about getting a little Jesus for my gig bag actually.
5. Set up the amp for whichever bass requires the least EQ adjustment, get an EQ pedal and set it up for the other bass, so you can switch it on when you switch to the other bass. Should sort it.
6. Yeah I saw him in Barca a couple of years back on the Metro, he's a really good player.
7.
Last time I even looked at one of those 'polls' it was for, I think, 'World's best Guitarist' or something. As I recall Noel Gallacher was about 9th, and Alan Holdsworth didn't make it onto the list.
I remember him advertising synth guitars in magazines in the early '90s, but are you telling me he's actually made some records too? That people have ever heard? I don't like Oasis but I know enough about them to decide I don't like them. I've literally not heard a note this bloke's produced, ever. (Paused to give Horace Panter a 10)
And "This Charming Man" for Andy Rourke? Probably one of his most staid, root-heavy lines. Hmmm.
Either that or Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was his most interesting Smiths stuff, IMO. It's funny to see all these people who think Mark King's (average rating: 3.42) not a complete twat getting all irate about a poll in NME. I just gave Kim Deal a 10 too. Sue me.
8. Is that a metallic finish? Looks surprisingly subtle in your photos.
9. I'm really happy with my 1212L, but I never used huge amounts of bass in my sound in the first place (mostly low mid instead) so I suppose if it is missing some bottom end I'm not going to notice. I can imagine that lightweight cabs aren't for everybody though.
10. I agree with you. I think "feel" is mostly habit.
11.
I'd suggest Headway. They're a British company
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EBfxjSFAxQ
12.
Hes a very interesting character.. Tis great when he wheres the goat horn hat..Does he/has he exclusively played Carl Thompson basses always??
No I think I've seen him use a Geddy Jazz before.
13. I saw Primus a couple of times when they still had Herb on the drums, some of the stuff Les does is just laughably impossible. He's got the coolest feel, funky and nerdy in equal measure. Great player.
14.
i should mention it was a PS5, not 3
Karmic balance restored. Carry on!
15. Er... Did a PS-3 just sell for £45? Holy poop arse.
16.
I've decided to take a year off Bass entirely and come back afresh, i'm simply a bit bored with where I am with the instrument and need a break to get some passion again.
Good luck, but in the past when I've had no bass I've had times when I missed it a lot. Other times when I've felt like I need a break I found two or three weeks has been enough. Don't be too surprised if you end up impulse-buying something in the mean time.
17. I've got LaBellas on my Jazz (can't remember what gauges, 104-40-something I think), they're pretty substantial-feeling, definitely a lot stiffer than rounds. With the tone off they do a nice thumpy soul sound, with the tone up it's more jazzy, especially picking up by the neck. I set that bass up mostly for playing old rocksteady stuff and it sounds bang on. There's decent sustain to be had, but I've a slice of 1/4" neoprene wedged under my bridge so I get a more thumpy sound than I ought to.
18. I've got their Firewire 1814 here which I use with Pro Tools M-Powered. It's a good interface, never had it crash either or Mac or PC, sounds good, tons of quality I/O for the money. All the knobs and switches feel a bit cheap though. I've never had a failure on it (I've been using it 18 months) but mine doesn't travel often. If you're looking for something portable maybe look elsewhere for something more rugged, but for a home studio it should be fine.
19.
Rob - I think you have over-reacted to my statements re Aebersold !! I have several of the CD play-alongs and I often use them for soloing practice. But surely you can see that there comes a point when you need to get away from this, dare I say, sterile environment and get out there and inter-react with other players. That is the ultimate pleasure in music making - playing with others, in front of an audience.
One issue though, for me anyway and I imagine for others, is that most of the people I play with know as much or less about music than I do. I'm sure I could go out to a jazz jam night or something and it would be hugely beneficial for me (and no doubt hugely embarrassing the first few times), but I'm a long way off knowing enough to do that, and the last place I'd want to put my study to practice is playing songs I don't really know with a bunch of people I've never met before.
20. That fretless Rick is gorgeous.
21. I used to do a fair bit of slap on fretless (mostly because I was only playing fretless and the band's previous bassist had a lot of slap parts I had to cover) and on a rosewood board I had to get it looked at every two or three months, depending on how busy we were. Eventually I had the rosewood board removed and an ebony one stuck on, but it didn't help a whole lot (but it did sound better). I did think about coating the board but I thought it would sound too bright, but maybe I should've done it anyway.
22. I'd agree with the others, about £700 if the finish is in very good condition.
23.
There is a school of thought that says a good fretless tone is all in the set up ... and left hand technique (vibrato) rather than the actual bass
It's not true though.
24.
As well as the live version, the exended version on the Musiquarium album is worth a listen, Humprhey Littleton on trumpet,
Typical Stevie gaffe on that one - he introduces him as Dizzy Gillespie!
25.
I have the feeling that there is a lot of confusion about musical modes on this forum ! I doubt I can put this right in one post, and I do have the intention of creating a new topic called "The History and Modern Usage of Musical Modes" when I can find time to do it properly ! But for now:
That definitely helped clear a few things up for me, thanks.
