1. Right, I think I get it. Well it's all useful, I'll persevere. Looks like I'm having to learn to read at the same time though, so it'll be slow going... Thanks.
 2. There's also the Octavius Squeezer, but it is quite pricey. But it is quite awesome.
 3. Ah OK that's fair enough. I might be double-confused here though... So are modes really only used to give a certain character to a melody, or do people ever write songs using the chords of a particular mode? If they do, that's sort-of what I was asking about originally - examples of songs which are written around the chords of a particular mode.
 4.
Just to get this out in the clear He is not making any money out of this So why do people still think this is wrong?
I don't know, it's a difficult topic. I sort-of know Al off other bits of the internets and I know he's a good guy, I'm not trying to paint anybody as a crook. Thing is though, if - for example - I bought one of Alex's Barefaced cabs, took it apart to see how it was constructed, then made my own and one for my mate without making a profit, and called it a "Bear-faced Compote", is that OK?
 5.
eg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorian_mode ... "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles[6] ...
OK well here's a song I know. The chords in the verse are Em and C, but there is no C natural in E Dorian. So is this incorrect info at Wikipedia or am I missing something? The melody over the Em chord does use E Dorian, but there's a C natural that resolves to B at the end of the melody. See how easily confused I am?
 6.
Course i'm not taking offense. To be completely honest, I expected something like this to come up eventually. Yeah, its not the best playing ever. Yeah, it needs some work. Yep.. i need to learn more techniques.. timing etc
You confessed all that right off the bat though, which is why you haven't seen much criticism - we know that you know it's not perfect.
 7.
Its the finger picking on it that trips me up and puts me out of time
Same here. You did a good job, the verse is really hard.
 8.
More Jazz ones: Passion Dance - McCoy Tyner Mr Clean - Freddie Hubbard Mode for Joe - Joe Henderson Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock Impressions - John Coltrane Sweet Georgia Bright - Charles Lloyd
Hi Mikey, Could you tell me which mode these tunes use or is that an exercise for me? I suppose I'll have to look up the changes anyway...
 9.
UPDATE: I haven't heard from Victor yet but Marcus has posted this on his Facebook page: "The bus company that we hired the tour bus from has assumed the responsibility for the charge and will have their lawyers argue it. They're confident they'll prevail."
So the bus company knows their driver was in the wrong but doesn't want to lose face infront of their client. It's now a "charge" rather than extortion. Presumably all the paperwork was above board.
 10. Well... I think if you want to clone a Mammoth for yourself, nobody's going to know are they? But making money out of cloning it for other people is poor form. You can say "It's a Fuzz Face" all day, but a fuzz face doesn't have four knobs. Why aren't you producing a two-knob fuzz if you're just using the Fuzz Face circuit? Because you're not, you're cloning a ZVex pedal. Nobody here who's producing Woolly Mammoth clones would be doing it if the Woolly Mammoth didn't exist, clearly. So saying it's based on a Fuzz Face fuzz doesn't make reproducing the Mammoth OK. IMHO.
 11.
I bought the MXR M80 for the sole purpose of it not being the BDDI. Only time will tell if i'm a right tool.
I'm torn over MXR gear. I love the fact that their pedals are always really quiet and well-built, but they just don't sound very exciting. I mean, EHX's pedals generally behave quite badly, they're either cheaply constructed or have weird power requirements or the bypass sounds awful, but when you switch them on they usually do something batshit-insane. You've got to admire that.
 12.
If i'm brutally honest with myself (which is all i ever try to be) then i can happily admit that most of the time i can't tell the difference between, say one type of amp/cab combo than i can another. I tend to just agree with people, to give the impression that i have commendable taste and know my sonic pedigree.
Your honesty is very refreshing. My main amp is a Hartke LH500 - it was cheap and it sounds ace to me. My main cab is a Schroeder 1212L. Not because I bought into any hype but because it's conveniently light and I am inconveniently weedy and pathetic. It sounds as good as any cab I recall using in the past. Is that good enough? My main bass is a Warwick Thumb which I wanted because Norwood Fisher used to play them. It just so happens to be a really nice bass but honestly, when I'm playing my Squier Jazz for extended periods I don't really notice the fact that I'm playing a bass I paid £110 for, but when I'm playing the Thumb I do appreciate how slick it feels. In short: I'm definitely no connoisseur, but that's cool, it saves me money. Oh, must add an over-rated bass thingy: The SansAmp Bass Driver DI. Everybody but me seems to have one and I just don't get it.
 13.
I've already been in touch with SMV's manager ... she suggested I get in contact with Victor himself which I've done.
If you want facts, wouldn't you be better off contacting the Spanish traffic police, given that Victor Wooten apparently doesn't know a word of Spanish and appeared to not have a clue what was going on?
 14. I'm trying to get my teeth into modes properly. Problem is, I've never really played with musicians who have any more theory knowledge than I do, so finding adventurous music (harmonically) to practise with seems to be a bit of a solo gig. But anyway I decided to look into them again, because I'm in a position with my bands where I need to start writing a lot again, and I'm having trouble consuming all this info in one go. So: Can anybody give me examples of some songs which use the chords of one single mode, or two at most, so I've got a frame of reference to work from, and a way of breaking up all this info into more consumable lumps? Fascinating stuff BTW. It's been ages since I've had time to sit down and think about music and I'd all but forgotten how interesting it is.
 15. I've never noticed any hiss from my LH500. As others have said the EQ is a bit limited (but it works well), apart from that there's not a lot wrong with it. Sounds good at band volumes, certainly has no problem reaching band volumes! Actually one minor beef would be that there's just a volume control and no preamp gain control, which can be a slight issue because a tiny turn of the knob on a 500W amp can mean a large increase.
 16.
Have to admit, I didn't like it either. It's a bit ugly and pedestrian looking. But I don't like any of his shapes TBH.
Neither do I, but they might look more to my liking with a solid colour rather than a blingy wood top, or maybe a pickguard or something. They do at least look quite original, and they all look like his designs rather than someone else's, so that's commendable but they're not for me, I don't think. I'm sure they're great basses though.
 17. Not cool man, US Americans don't know where places are because they don't have maps. In some places such as South Africa and Iraq, everywhere like, such as, and the education in the US should help the US so they can build their future.
 18.
I'm still defending what I said, in that in that at least in the genres I'm interested in, clothing is not that important. Look at what the Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, and countless others wear on stage. Jeans and a t-shirt and a pair of comfy trainers usually!
Blur might be a bad example. Compare how they looked during Leisure, to how they looked a couple of years later for Modern Life Is Rubbish.
 19. The two best lower-priced filters would be the DOD FX25B and the EHX Q-Tron. Try both and see which you prefer, they not only sound very different (the Q-Tron is a bit peaky and wild, the FX25B is thick and smooth) but also feel like they react very differently to your playing. If you decide you want more options and have more to spend, look at Meatball clones (3Leaf Groove Regulator, Robot Factory Meatwad, Barge Concepts Grinder). There's a good range of options and prices there, and all of them receive positive reviews. The Moog recommended above isn't especially good as an envelope-following filter IMO, but is useful as a static filter for making synthy sounds, or doing manual sweeps with an exp. pedal.
 20.
I wonder how many people realise they are there.
I didn't. Just looked at that black bass he's built. I think the chrome hardware puts me off a bit, but I see black hardware is available. It also looks a bit too basic but that might just be the black finish, I've never bought a black bass and maybe that's why. I'll be interested to see how his other body shapes look with the pared-down features.
 21. I switched between 40-100 and 45-105 for a while, mostly depending on what a shop had in when I wanted some strings. I think I noticed the difference in sound more on the higher strings - heavier gauge gave me more confidence on the G, that the notes would sound good and full rather than twangy. Whereas I noticed the difference in stiffness more on the lower strings, but it didn't seem to make much difference to the tone, to me. YMMV.
 22.
the Graft basses are a new one on me.
I, like, totally can't find them. Are they on the ACG website somewhere?
 23. Did you ever get along with this guy? Sounds like you were ready to quit before the "meeting".
 24. My bass sounds alright already, so when I hear "new preamp" it just doesn't register as something I need to care about.
 25. They're probably used to that sort of thing, American cops are a law unto themselves. Especially state troopers. Nobody got tasered or maced at least.
