Funnily enough it was the comments on here that put me off the OS - problems with the firmware and usability etc. I thought that two seperate pedals would be easier. Looks like I was wrong!
Yeah the O.S. is a bit... well, it's not as perfect as it ought to be for the money, put it that way. But it's difficult to slate it, they're a small company making an ambitious pedal, and I haven't been able to evaluate it properly yet. Mine went back to Chunk because of various issues - random crashes, random double-clicking from one of the footswitches, stuff like that. I think it was a power issue but maybe it was causing tracking issues too. It arrived home yesterday and the crashes and footswitch thing are definitely fixed, but I haven't had time to plug a bass in and check out the tracking yet. The tracking was fairly good before, about as good as an analogue octaver, but there was an issue with it sharpening notes on release which was annoying. I'll have to see if that's improved any. Overall though I'm impressed with it. Maybe it's a bit fragile, I've heard of a few requiring attention, but I have no complaints about the sounds. For me just the versatility on the filters (low-pass and band-pass, with envelope, ADSR, LFO and sample & hold controls) plus memory settings makes it worth the money, the fuzz is a great bonus on top, and even if the oscillator side of things never tracks properly I'd still keep it.
Yes but then the envelope input will be post Fuzz.
I think what TaySte meant was to put the Y cable before the Brown Dog, send one split to the Brown Dog input, and the other to the 00Funk envelope in. Same solution I suggested using an LS-2 really, but much cheaper. I'm always a bit sketchy about using Y-cables, but not for any rational reason.
Sorry but what does OS mean? Operating System??
The Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer. It has the 00Funk and Brown Dog circuits in it, and also a dedicated mixer (amongst other neat features) that makes sure the envelope follower always gets the clean input signal.
Can you advise how this would fit in with my existing pedal set up - where would I put the LS-2 - at the beginning?
Beginning would be best, so it gets the (best, cleanest) signal from your guitar and sends it to the envelope in on your 00Funk. But I would try it with a Y-cable first like TaySte suggested. If it works well enough then it'll be much cheaper than the LS-2 solution.
OK, get a Y cable, plug the Y end into the envelope input on the agent. Plug A into the envelope output on the fuzz. Plug B into Send B on a Boss LS-2. Plug the fuzz into the LS-2's A loop. Set it to switch between A and B.
Easier (still involving an LS-2): Guitar -> LS-2 (always on, set to A+B Mix) LS-2 "A" Send -> Brown Dog input LS-2 "B" Send -> 00Funk envelope in Nothing plugged into the LS-2 output or loop return jacks (you're basically using it as a buffered signal splitter). That way your 00Funk is always receiving an input, regardless of whether your fuzz is on or not, just don't use the envelope out on the fuzz. You could potentially use any fuzz in this setup and get the same results from your filter, but personally I like the Brown Dog circuit.

Neck "rattle" - bit weird
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Repairs and Technical
Have you got a JAN I? If so, I have heard over on the Warwick forum that the screws can loosen in the nut and rattle. A long shot if the E string screw is stuck, but might be worth checking?
Yes it is a JAN 1. I'm surprised they would rattle when strung up to pitch though. The sound is definitely coming from that area but I assumed that's because I've got the truss rod cover off... It also "feels" like there's a slight vibration from the neck, which also made me think truss rod. I'll see if I can figure it out tonight... -

Neck "rattle" - bit weird
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Repairs and Technical
I had a similar problem with my Warwick dolphin, some older warwicks have very stiff necks, when I used lighter gauge strings there was no tension on the rod at all as none was needed. Try tapping the neck and see if it rattles the rod may be loose due to lack of tension.
I think this is it. I'll turn some rod back on, then, enough to make it go away without altering the neck. The rod feels quite tight though, maybe it's getting old. -
just got my schroeder 1212L and mark bass rig
The box with the Schroeder in was about the same size as an old Peavey 2x10 I still have but when I took it out the box it seemed really small. And rediculously light.
When mine arrived Postie offered to carry it up the stairs to my flat, so I knew it was going to be light. -
I suppose that's the design you end up with when you shoot for "true bypass". It does seem silly I agree. So I guess the filter just stays closed if there's no signal arriving through the envelope in?
If you could live with a lined pau ferro board then my Warmoth Jazz is now up at £410, less than half the cost of the parts new.
I had a pau ferro board on the Stingray that's sitting in a box downstairs waiting for a courier to take it away. Nice enough, but I much prefer ebony. The Jazz I had was rosewood and that was a bit too mellow too. The Warmoth idea's not a bad one, but I was hoping for something that I don't have to spend a day assembling and however long waiting for the parts to arrive.

I recently shifted my Stingray f/less, and decided Stingrays just aren't for me - I never got happy with the neck. So can I probably assume that I don't want a Precision either? So I need a new fretless. I've had a couple of others in the past (Godin Acoustibass, USA Fender Jazz) and of the two I liked the Godin much more for tone, but the Jazz was much more practical on stage due to the horrendous neck dive on the Godin. I liked the Jazz enough until I had to replace the bridge, pickups and neck... Logically I'd buy a Jazz if I could find a nice one, but I want an unlined, ebony board like I had on the Godin. I don't really dig boutique-looking basses, but I do like natural wood finishes if they're not too "bling". Strictly no gold hardware - I don't want anything showy. Tone-wise I'd like it to do the typical fretless bloomy sound. Most of the time it's going to get drowned in effects, frankly, but it would be nice for it to be there. Neck-wise I like Jazzes (that work) and (especially) my '91 Thumb but I don't have the budget for an old Thumb fretless, and I think the short top horn on the Thumb would make fretless playing difficult. I like rolled edges and boards with a proper radius to them, no flat boards. Any ideas?

I'll happily out someone: A few months back I asked the owner (owner!) of MOR Music in York (Fossgate) if he had any short speaker cables (I needed one that night). He said - and these are pretty much his exact words: "No, but you're in luck, because speaker cables are exactly the same as instrument cables". After a brief exchange of posturing I said "So you'd happily put 300W down an instrument cable?" and he said "300W? No." and started rooting around, and eventually found a speaker cable he wanted to sell me for a tenner. It looked home-made and given my rapidly-declining opinion of his technical nouse I said no, and ended up borrowing one at the gig.
A rather more extreme case, but some neighbours a few years back almost killed their baby by running a fan heater on a fully coiled mains extension!
Whenever my girlfriend pulls out the hoover (exactly as often as I do - I do my share I swear!) I find myself uncoiling all the mains cable out of it (it's a Henry with the cable coiled inside it) and she rolls her eyes at me like I'm being all patronising. The sad part is she worked as a theatre tech for years - I thought she'd know this stuff. Girls...

Warwick prices on the up?
thisnameistaken replied to lemmywinks's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
£650 for a BO Corvette... bodes well for the NT Streamers that I have for sale! Though I am loathed to eBay them, that may be the way forward.
I bought my '91 Thumb on eBay about five years ago for £670. Last month I was watching an auction for another '91 Thumb that ended on £1170 (IIRC) and ultimately sold to the same guy who'd sold me his for £670 + petrol money. So yeah, I think values are starting to get realistic again. Actually... He was from Tyneside somewhere, can't remember exactly, maybe you know him. -
I ordered some LaBella flats from them a couple of weeks back (on someone's recommendation, might've been WoT, I forget), turned up 2 days later, no complaints here. I like the way they just quietly sell strings, efficiently at a good price, and don't feel the need to make a big noise about how important customer service is to them in every paragraph they print - that kind of stuff really irks me now.

Our singer's a big Erykah Badu fan. Looks a bit like her too, but fitter. If I have to listen to R&B / Soul I prefer Jill Scott's stuff myself, seems a bit more sure of what she's doing. But really I find all that music a bit too quiet.

I suppose the biggest risk is not so much a flabby low B as the reasonably high chance the particular Fender in question is a Friday afternoon special. I tried a Jazz V once in a shop, a while back, didn't like it (and I do like Jazzes) but it could've just been a bad one. I say take your Alembic, you clearly take pride in your professional integrity so you'll want to be sure of a good sound, and like you said you're working every night this week so times can't be so tough. And I'm smiling at the thought of it having its own seat and enjoying complementary in-flight gin and tonic.
Our very own Umph is doing the TB, LED and exp mods for a very small amount (I can't say how much as he's also doing a bunch of other work and has quoted me a single price). I reckon less than £30 though.
I'm starting to like our very own Umph. He's working on a custom blender for me at the mo (which I'll post about when it's ready).

New EHX Pedals in stock next week - XO POG2, Enigma Q-Balls
thisnameistaken replied to dannybuoy's topic in Effects
Next week? Next month, surely. EHX are releasing a new filter to SPITE ME. I will show them! how weak I am -
I bet the MXR Bass Blowtorch would do that really easily. The onboard EQ makes fitting it into your band mix easier than most fuzzes too.
I am actually having that done at the mo.
The exp. mod? Who's doing it and for how much, if you don't mind telling?

New ebony fretless neck for my '71 Precision...
thisnameistaken replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
That looks really tasty. I might have to insist on an ebony board on my next fretless (only ever had one - on my old Godin - and it was lush). -
FWIW the true bypass mod is a doddle too, I did that to mine last week. Considered doing the expression pedal mod while I had the thing in bits but I didn't like the idea of cutting traces.

Some guitarists seem to prefer the Bass Micro Synth, but I don't think the guitar version will work so well on bass. I'd avoid it personally.
The big metals ones tend to go for around £100 on here, the modern XO ones slightly less.
If you get either of them used for under £120 it's a good price IMO. The original steel-cased BMS is still one of my favourite pedals.
... I just realised I wanted an old Fender and couldn't afford one, but when this franken P came up with a 70's neck, and a Jap body at a realistic price, I couldn't resist. You know how it is, otherwise I would have kept this and put the neck pup in.
I was tempted by that too, but from Beedster's description it doesn't sound like it does that familiar bloomy fretless sound. It is pretty though.
