Would it be possible to make a pedal that switches the signal chain
thisnameistaken replied to iamapirate's topic in Effects
Wobo do one, I think a few others do too. -
I prefer the original to be honest. There I go again bagging on cover versions...
Ok..so where the f*** have I or anyone said that?
Well, without trawling other threads, this morning you said this:
A quantity of people on here..are..not....very..good..musicians...(said at risk)....dont read/wont read types..The 'I cant see the point in 5/6/+ string Basstuned instruments...
And you also said I'm not fit to say that a lot of what Wooten plays sounds terrible:
None of us..and that includes EVERYONE,is even fit to even pass comment on their playing,
I'm not making this stuff up, you just have a very short memory.
we did have a whole thread on YOUR generalisation over 'Covers and tribute acts'.
I'm not sure why my opinion on cover/tribute bands is relevant to this discussion, unless you're just trying to drum up some support.

Actually I've never slagged off anybody for learning about music or being able to read or any other attributes that require commitment and hard work. I only ever turn up when someone makes generalisations that if you don't play prog rock on a 9-string bass then you're a less talented musician and you must by extension hate the people who are playing prog rock with their giant basses. I honestly don't mind what other people do with their basses, I don't have to listen to it. The assumption that I'm closed-minded or can't play because I think Wooten's plinky-plonky slap technique sounds like arse does irk me though. Can we not say that something sounds bad if the guy doing it's been on a magazine cover?
The original NEW Fender had problems with the saddles lowering by themselves causing the bass to go out of tune.
I had that on a new USA Jazz (actually gigged with an allen key tied to the bridge so I can adjust the action between songs). I think country of manufacture is no indication of quality any more, you just have to play a few until you find one that wasn't built on a Friday afternoon.
Get an Xotic XBlender, it's got a phase correction switch. It's allowed me to use my Mutron III blended.
Yeah but the plan was to have all my effects potentially blend-able in the same loop. Then if I switch off the Meatwad my FX line would go out-of-phase, unless it had its own dedicated loop, and I'd end up with more utility boxes than effects. -

I kinda need to send mine back too, it's just getting around to it. I've recently discovered the Low-Pass and High-Pass filters put the effected signal out of phase, meaning the Blend knob becomes basically useless... I'm waiting to get my Squeezer back from Chunk in Oz before I go mailing off my other "main" filter though. -
A quantity of people on here..are..not....very..good..musicians...(said at risk)....dont read/wont read types..The 'I cant see the point in 5/6/+ string Basstuned instruments...
Oh, so the number of strings you've got is directly proportional to how good a musician you are? I thought it was only related to how small your penis is.
-
Until you said the sound was the same whatever technique I thought it might be your fingerstyle technique (I know I attack the higher strings from a different angle most of the time, and it gives a very different sound). And until you said you were wearing 105-45 I thought maybe your strings were too skinny. Hmm. I think you just don't like the sound of the higher strings. Have you heard other bassists' higher strings that you actually like the sound of, and would like yours to sound like theirs? Might be an idea to string your bass B-E-A-D and see if you prefer that?

Sounds a lot like Jill Scott. Great bass playing I agree. Wish I was half as slick, then maybe they'd mix me as high as they mix him.
OK, just back from Star Trek and tried it out. Definately works better with the Assmaster in the loop, no doubt about it. Problem is I can't engage the fuzz independently from the filter which is not an option.
Ah yeah. My Meatwad's got a switch to do exactly that, but it seems I'm the only person in the universe who's ever asked for that option... -
Have you listened to all of his albums?
I bought the first one when it came out, I think it was 96 or 97. I was impressed with a couple of the tunes in terms of the amount of different rhythms he was making all at the same time (I was also impressed that he could play bass up a unicycle - no obvious tonal benefits I could think of but if you're a party-piece bassist I suppose it pays to have some circus tricks), but the plinky-plunky double-thumb slap stuff sounded ****ing awful, and it still does. It's all very well being a talented instrumentalist, but if you use those skills to produce ****ing awful noises then you can expect people to pick you up on it. It's not just the famous bassists who manage to produce terrible music though. I think 99% of solo bass recordings sound like sh*t. Especially those bassists who insist on whacking a rhythm into a delay pedal and soloing over the top of it like it's clever. Almost guaranteed to sound like sh*t, and make the perpetrator look like a pompous knobhead.

Hmm. You've just made me wonder if there's a battery in my Woolly Mammoth. I've never looked... -
Excellent - that explains perfectly why I don't get a particularly great sound from using the Assmaster with the meatwad as is. I shall try this tonight. Thanks for the explanation.
I'm not familiar with how fuzzy the Assmaster is (never tried one) but I imagine the difference will be like night and day. -
I already get a really cool sound from it in series and haven't felt the need to dabble with the loop. What are the benefits of using the loop? I'm not that techy - go on, hit me with the knowledge!
Well it looks like you've got the Assmaster and the Hyperpak in series before the Meatwad. If you switch (one of) those on with the Meatwad I would imagine the dynamics of your playing would be flattened quite a lot by the fuzz, and the filter wouldn't quack so much. Whereas if you put a fuzz in the filter's loop you'd still get the sound of the fuzz being first in the chain, but you'd have the benefit of your clean signal triggering the filter, so the filter would be much more reactive to your playing. The benefits are especially obvious if you use a lot of gain on your fuzz. Certainly if I put my Woolly Mammoth infront of a filter, the filter just stays wide open! Whereas in the loop the envelope follower can work properly. -
They stopped installing the springs in the mid 90s due to litigation risks (people were cutting their fingers on the springs). They can be retrofitted, and EB sold kits for a while, but they're not so easy to get nowadays. They appear on ebay from time to time.
Yeah I keep looking but they seem to be quite rare. I suppose people don't often undo random parts of bass bridges and put them up for sale. Seems reasonable when you look at it that way...
-
Just bought some George L's jacks from Martin. He is reassuringly prudent with parcel tape application, and his penmanship is second to none.
-
Assuming it's the rubber mutes that are missing rather than the mute mechanism (which they stopped installing in the factory before the bridge was redesigned... sharp parts and all that), mouse mats are your answer. You have to trim them to size, mind you...
Ah. No. I don't have the springy bits, just the older-style bridge.
-
My fretless Stingray's got holders for them, but the mutes must've been removed by a previous owner. I've been thinking about finding some and adding them. I've never had a bass with string mutes before though. And I'm genuinely a "bass player" so I've never tied a girlfriend's scrunchy around the top of the neck either.
are you sure your northern!?!
Of course. What I meant to say is my fingertips go fizzy but it doesn't bother me because I'm rock hard.
-
I've only ever made up one duff George L's cable - the first one I did. It's a pretty fool-proof process IMO. The only thing that bothers me about them is getting fizzy fingertips from all the tightening, if you make up a dozen patch cables or so.
-
last night started with her asking me what would be my ideal bass. I immediately replied "fretless Wal".
I bet there are a lot of women in the UK who know the phrase "fretless Wal" better than they have any reason to. My girlfriend knows my dream bass is a Wal too, I'm just too cheap to pay for one. Sounds like you're after a very obvious fretless tone. Maybe look at Warwicks - Nick Beggs was playing fretless Warwicks in the late '80s and getting lovely woody, purring noises. But then so was Pino Palladino in the early '80s on a Stingray. I think you'll probably find the tone you want quicker than you'd imagine if you just go out and play some basses, then it's really a matter of whether you're happy with the neck.
+10 Cobain was a fantastic songwriter,im more of a funker than a grunger, but respect is due,to commit suicide is awful, and it was such a waste.
Yeah I was never into grunge* (I liked the Manchester sound more at the time, Leeds bands like Bridewells, Wedding Present and Cud, and of course Pixies) but I'd happily give up half my bass-playing skills to have half the songwriting skills that Kurt Cobain had. * Had a soft spot for Mudhoney though.
