1.
I am definitely not that good, that is one reason for trying, I want more experience of the instrument.... As you say, the band may not really like it though!!!
Sorry no I meant if the act is good. I'm not particularly good either. Beedster said it well though. Sometimes you can't directly reproduce a bass guitar part on the upright (either physically, or because it doesn't sound good) so you would have to compromise in some cases and your band might not like that.
2. Depends entirely on what sort of music you play and how you approach it. Some guys never use any effects at all, some wouldn't entertain gigging without a compressor, some need a couple of flightcases full of noise toys to do what they do. Can't tell you what's essential for you, though.
3. I do sometimes use more than one bass but I have one strung with rounds and one with flats and mutes under the bridge, so they have a totally different contribution to the band sound even accounting for the bass-tone-ruining nature of most in-house PAs. TBH though I think if it was a more subtle difference like the one you're talking about, I probably wouldn't bother live. The difference won't be heard front of house.
4. Totally agree with BRX. Of the common neck profiles the Jazz is closest to what I like but it's a little too skinny at the nut and not deep enough. Whereas the P is a little too wide at the nut and generally feels like an odd fit for my hand all the way up. I really like Warwick necks and can't really explain why but it must be the overall shape that feels comfortable for the dimensions of my hand. My Warwick isn't as narrow as a Jazz but it's close, but it's definitely got more of a stocky feel around the back, it's a really good fit for me.
5. Kim Deal - Gigantic Paul Simonon - Guns of Brixton Jah Wobble - Becoming More Like God Sting - Bed's Too Big Without You Me'Shell - Dredlocks
6. I think it's a neat bass, for Bootsy Collins, clearly not for anybody else. I imagine it's a brilliant bit of kit too.
7. I've done a few sets with a guy who throws in pop covers with his own slacker rap stuff and we've done tunes from Housemartins to Jessie J to Snoop Dogg with him on acoustic guitar and me on upright bass, both doing vocals. It helps if you're good. If it's your main gig though it's a bit different. Your band might not appreciate the alternative instrumentation.
8. Good news man. I don't think it's got any colder since back in November when you started this thread so I guess we've been pretty lucky really.
9. Oh look a dozen more overdrives, definitely a pedal that the market doesn't have enough of. Where is my programmable Bass Micro Synth and my programmable ADSR envelope generator? Do they still have an R&D department at EHX?
10. A gated fuzz is really useful. The Chunk Systems Brown Dog is excellent, as is the Iron Ether Oxide. Bitcrushers / Sample Rate Reducers very useful for adding a digital quality to stuff and generally destroying things. A good spacious-sounding chorus to add to your filtered fuzz if you want that cheesy Pendulum sound (I don't, personally).
11. Just bought Will's modded OC-2, it was in my hands within 24hrs of sending payment which was pretty neat. Thanks again.
12. It looks like Iron Ether isn't taking orders at the moment and no indication of when he'll start again.
13. I imagine it's got potential to change your approach to what you're playing, so it might be a useful creative tool.
used sparingly of course.
But to use it 'sparingly' you will need a spare guitar because it is clearly quite massive and stupid.
14. I could really do with a nice sawtooth sound, I know the Markbass Super Synth does it, but I heard you can't set its output mix to solo the synth sound -it always mixes in some of the bass guitar signal. Any alternatives out there? I would be happy to use a gated fuzz if there's one on the market that does it convincingly.
15. Practising alone I don't really use effects, although to be honest I rarely practise bass guitar any more I spend all my practise time on the upright, and I'm not going to go plug that in to practise...
16. I used to get my 3/4 DB in my girlfriend's old Daihatsu Sirion. Little 1L thing that was only ever bought by grannies so dirt cheap to insure but great around town and would still creep up to 90 on the motorway. Admittedly it would also creep down to 60 uphill...
17. It's not a good time of year to be selling stuff like this is it, what with christmas just gone and the tax deadline looming. It's a lovely looking bass and the same age as me but I can't find 2k, I don't have that many sofas to rummage in!
18. Very ace. She should get a medal and infinite credits on Ikari Warriors.
19. I've heard luthiers advise against fitting ebony boards before just because the cost is more than the benefit on most basses. Save your money to experiment with strings - it will cost you a fortune to find the perfect set.
20. My dream fretless is a Mk1 4 string. I used to know a local guy who had one and it helped that he was a great player but that was one of two basses I'd always lusted after. I've got the other one (a '91 Thumb).
21. You just weren't feeling it. It was an off day. You know like those days when you listen to a recording you've listened to a hundred times but it seems oddly slower than usual?
22. I decided I didn't want to be a professional musician when I was about your age. I'd been doing it since I was 19, and I'd made a decent living out of it, but I realised I wanted to play music I loved with people I loved and not take gigs I didn't care about or taking on students just to pay the bills. I'd also met with record company people on a few occasions and decided I didn't want to be signed to a major label either. I've still been busy in bands ever since, but not making any money out of it, and that's what makes me happy. I'd had another hobby since I was a little kid - programming - so I did that professionally instead.
23. Any measurements? Is it a Precision profile or a Jazz profile? Any photos? Any more information would be useful.
24. What sort of sound do you want? What sort of sonic characteristics does your bass have? There are a lot of great pizz strings available but it really depends what you want.
25. Are Velvets really copper? They go black when they tarnish, surely copper would oxidise and go blue? I get pretty black fingers if I spend too much time up the dusty end, so I am curious about them being copper!
